  • Scream vocals, otherwise known as distorted voice, is a contentious way to use the voice in some circles. But recently, with the help of people like Dr Dan's guest, Melissa Cross, the heavier genres are becoming better understood and consequently, safer to sing. Settle in for today's discussion as we learn to scream from the master.

I had to watch more than once. This is SUPERIOR advice. Not only about the screaming but about the PLACEMENT of all the vowels and the removal of the left brain dominance. Very cool. I will test this method today with some Journey in the presence of my vocal instructor.

I've been learning vocals and performing for YEARS. My voice has been dragged through hell and back. So I can definitely say that Melissa and Dr Dan are the handful of vocal coaches that truly expand my understanding instead of just making me do vocal exercises with little to no explanation. You guys are THE BEST!

Ok so the lead of Disturbed recommended Melissa to me.
Though I am not a screamer, I’m a singer. This has already helped me improve and understand so much!
In the matter of minutes! Wow. I’m honored. Thank you for blessing us with this💕

Thanks so much folks. So many of us gigging singers forget about the significance of speaking correctly (all the time). Being a New Yorker, we tend to drop our voice into the throat. It took me a long time and speech therapy to correct that habit. I still have to be on guard not to fall into my "gangster voice." That voice can be a real phlegm maker....lol!!!

Hi, my name is saliah Begum. I'm from the UK. I originate from Bangladesh. I have taken approximately a years of classes in Hindi classical. You have helped me to understand to move from harmony singing to melody singing to layers. Thank you so much. I'll be looking for a contemporary music instructor now.

Thank you both for giving the time to share this wonderful discussion. Melissa is quite a character!
I found that she touched on several things that I have experienced in singing but wasn’t able to articulate as clearly as she does. Specifically, how logical, critical, “left brain” thinking is a great boon in the practice room, but can interfere with giving an inspired performance. Once you are out on stage, you want to leave the technical details behind and focus on getting your emotional message across. Over-analyzing your singing in that moment can lead to disaster!
It was also good to be reminded that these things take practice, and time. As we learn to sing, we are learning the “geography” of our bodies, learning where notes “live” and how to access resonances and maintain pitch.
I found myself rewinding several times to see if I could better grasp the points she was making. I have to admit it may have gone over my head at times! Thank you again for this great video.

I love this! I love the diversity of the people you have on your channel. I have learned so much and I have been in music all my life. I started off playing piano and thought I would be a concert pianist so I took it very seriously. I had a great teacher. Piano teachers never catch you before you go on stage and say be sure your fingers are agile be sure you’re fingering is correct watch it now. If practiced you’re fixing to go on stage whatever it is it is and that way you can just focus and your mind on the music and the way it feels flowing through your fingers instead of is my fourth finger in the right place. But every voice teacher I have ever had will catch you before you get on stage and say are you sure now you use your support before that high note and just bounce up to it don’t put too much emphasis on the note before it. I got to the point where I didn’t invite my voice teachers to performances or my mother because they make me crazy.
