    I never thought about how much milk a cow produces daily. You mentioned 6 gallons so one milk cow would supply a few families depending on how many kids. 😁💘💘 Thank you 🙏🇺🇸

    I would suggest getting a breed of cow that gives only the amount of milk you need. We have a little Dexter that gives us 1/2 gallon a day (with a calf on her, too). We drink it as it comes in. Usually 1-2 gallons in our kitchen fridge.

      I'm thinking my family should get a milk cow and a Dexter is what I've been researching on. With a calf, you still get 1/2 gallon a day? Do you milk once or twice daily? How are their temperament?

      @@altasadventures1139 hubby milks once in the morning. Cow and calf are together all day, then calf and cow are separated at night. Once hubby milks, he lets the calf in with Mama.

      @@RuralCanadianMom yep! 1/2 gallon even with the calf on. They're separated at night, but graze together during the day. I would say our cow is pretty gentle, but she can be stubborn like any animal. Hubby won her over with treats and scratches.

    Thank you for the overview. We always think about getting A dairy cow if our schedules ever allow for it. I didn't realize you would get that much daily. A friend of ours who raises cows also uses the milk com his cow to supplement his pig feed.

    My goats are kidding next month and we’re gearing up for milking. I’d love brand recommendations for the pails, I don’t know the best place to look for those. And I’d add that most people will also want to have a milking station (based on my research, not experience of course).

      Shenandoah homestead supply is where I got my bucket and filtering supplies, and they've been great. That said, I start out milking into Mason jars for my first fresheners and dump into the bucket frequently. I do that until I really really trust my girls on the stand. Less chance of a hoof in *all* of your milk that way. Happy kidding and milking!

    I just discovered your channel while looking up instant pot bone broth and WOW!! You're doing awesome! I love your homestead, what state are you in? We are in Utah and we have our land and cows but no house yet. Slow and steady wins the race but we also feel pressure to get established because we see that things are going crazy in the world beyond our tiny town. Thanks for sharing all that you have learned!

    Do you get your milk tested if it’s just for your family? At what age do your kids start drinking raw milk (if it hasn’t been tested)?

    We just got a young holstein heifer to be friends with our steer. We are hoping to do raw milk with her in a year or two. The person we got her from rolled her eyes when we said we wanted to get milk eventually because of the amount of milk we would get. What kind of cow are you getting 6 gallons a day from? How long does it take to hand milk, assuming you are getting 3 gallons twice a day?

    HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE MILK AND CREAM. DOES THE MILK NEED TO BE PASTURIZED OR HOMOGENIZED?
    IF SO, HOW IS THIS DONE?

    • @angieleach
      @angieleach Před rokem +3

      To get the maximum health benefits do not pasteurize or homogenize. We are dairy farmers and our milk that is cooled in a bulk tank lasts an easy 2 weeks refrigerator. I hope to read more comments...as experience is the best teacher

    • @lanceweeda1147
      @lanceweeda1147 Před rokem

      Ecoli lives in the cow naturally and is safe for the cow. You should ALWAYS pasteurize your milk! No minuscule amount of extra omega fatty acids are worth the potential and more than often than not kidney failure due to infection. Don't listen to anybody who thinks it's safer. There is a reason food related death has dropped dramatically since pasteurization and Refrigeration was invented.
