Theoretically this is exactly what I need for a custom project I've had in mind for years. A mini pc in the case of a Playstation2
That would be so cool. I’ve wanted to do something like that for ages!
I’m glad I’m not alone with this idea
Cool, make a video of you making it!
I had this dream before 💔
mini itx mobos exist?
To expand on the temperature thing, that's by design for Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 parts, the boost algorithms are tuned to thermal boosting, the chips will target 95c regardless of what cooling you use.
Aah, that's one thing to note, thank you. Didn't realize that these CPUs actually target a higher temperature.
For Dragon Range TjMax is even 100c.
Well, there are also reports of terrible machining on the cold plate of that heatsink.
I'm absolutely amazed that an 8C/16T CPU at 5.1GHz is even staying below 80C to be honest. That's a bonkers amount of power shoved into such a tiny chip, with such a dinky cooler too. Amazing performance for its power usage.
In fairness that cooler has multiple heat pipes and isn't as small as it looks, it's probably got more surface area for dissipating heat than the tower cooler I have keeping my 12700f well under 65c while gaming and that thing eats up around 160W when it gets pushed.
@@bdhale34 As someone else has pointed out, these chips target 95c, if you aren't hitting 95c, you aren't leaving any performance on the table for it. That is assuming that you have PBO turned on.
Uh it’s running at 35w-70w but okay lol
@@youtubeaccount7544 When I got into PCs we had single core laptop processors with 0.1% of this chip's performance which sat at 100C all day long. Having such a powerful CPU use so little power and produce so little heat is amazing to me.
@@youtubeaccount7544built a pc with this mobo, CPU goes up to 100 watts
Oh I didn't realize minisforum was producing standalone motherboards! I've seen their mini PCs for the last couple of years and wanted to get them, but this is an interesting proposition. Look at those heatsinks!
Yeah it’s a chunky boi 😁
They have a few including an intel based one with 6! M.2 connectors, 3 of which are on an MxM board
@@NaoRose too bad the mxm gpu boards are too much, i kinda wish they had the 13650hx availible for the intel version(with the pcie 16x) but they only have the i9 13900hx availible for purchase atm
I gotta say, its not optimal, but that is one cute motherboard.
That huge CPU heatsink and a big fan on such a small motherboard is a sight to behold.
Been a while since i saw fans mounted directly on top of a CPU.
Also about RDR 2 in first person, its absolutely phenomenal, i played it solely it in first person except when im riding on horses or checking out my wardrobe, such a gritty experience.
Its honestly one of the best FPS experiences ive had in a long time and especially in modern games next to RE 7, Village and Alien Isolation. I was blown away by it and im SO GLAD Rockstar added it in the game so i didnt have to use mods to get it in like GTA 4.
It flows well, mouselook is great.
Anyway, as usual, a great video, love the outlook of overlooked or underspecced stuff.
I have been eyeing this board... perfect time for a review. Such an interesting little thing.
This thing is awesome honestly. Love it. Wish more mini motherboards like this were capable like this one is.
i just got mine yesterday, looking forward to its performance in a custom itx build.
For $400 it's actually objectively worth it's price. Plus finding an ITX board with good VRMs right now is hard, just because socket sizes are so big now, so using a mobile APU actually makes sense.
Yeah always nice to have more options on the market :)
.... not really. You can get a full-fat laptop for 500.
with a 7745HX??@@kaneCVR
And can also build an itx to similar specs for much cheaper
@@kaneCVRcompletely different audience
Merry Christmas bro.
I know it would be a really niche product but I wish the 7745HX or similar chip supported ECC RAM. I would love a compact board like that with ECC support and a 10Gig ethernet NIC onboard with 1 full 16x PCIe slot for a HBA. That would make an awesome compact NAS or server with enough expandability to power a home lab.
They do but is not out yet .. BD79i is the want you want with the ryzer9 7945hx
Wow, I have been eyeing this board for a while now. It reminds me of the aliexpress erying motherboards but AMD instead of intel. I am tempted to wait for the Ryzen 9 variant just for the additional cores.
I would love to do a build with this and a 4070 (when its cheap) for an energy efficient build. However I still would have to do research on these types of boards and weigh some pro's and cons, because I don't want to regret it later down the road.
Yeah always important to do research before a big purchase. Hopefully this video helps :)
@@RandomGaminginHD
It definitely does help. I might have to dig through forums for more info, but it does help alot to have atleast somewhat of an idea for options.
The main drawback is going to be the fact that you cant upgrade the CPU.
Surely for this amount of money(540 and that is discounted from 700) in the uk at the moment is just better to build normal mini-itx system and just limit how much power your Cpu uses no?
A decent b650 mobo and ryzen9 7900x will set you up around the same amount of money and you'll most likely have better performance.
@@gipsaslYeah i ultimately ended up going with a b650 and a ryzen 7700 with 32gb 6400mhz ram. overshot it by 50 euro's, but i honestly have way more connectivity and options.
Very interesting build
steve with all your mini pc content i think it's time to finally get an itx case lol
i really wanted to see this being fit into a snug looking case
love your videos !
Thanks!
I would like to see one with an APU with the 780M.
Cool video.
I was just looking on amazon and found this motherboard and when I look for a review on YT. It was already on my home page 😮
would love to see benchmarks of the bd790i. was planning to do a sff build with a 4080, if the 7945hx at 100+w can use all of that gpu at 1440p without too much bottleneck it would be my go to. cheaper, more energy efficient and wouldn't make me as annoyed as getting a desktop cpu and having to undervolt it to avoid thermal throttling lol
Minisforum have a Flash sale (£30 off) the BD770i till 10am 20/01/24 - £359 delivered for those interested and see this in time ⏰
surprisingly quiet competitive with the erying motherboards
I would say the temps are not too bad when you take the clocks into account.
Fantastic!
It could be a nice powerful ITX build, oh wow!
Yeah some of the pictures I’ve seen of little builds are awesome
It'd be perfect for sff NAS builds as well. Cool
Exactly. i'll put 8 SSD's on that pcie slot, with a highpoint adapter, use the onboard radon 610 video
Good stuff 👌👍
What a beast!
I have a AMD V1000 coming, and mine has an equivalent to 2400g with Vega 11 graphics. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs.
Might be perfect for the Revolt 3 case I just bought.
I mean damn that is cool. Its absolutely perfect for a mini itx build with a side or back mounted gpu. And normally itx motherboards are not cheap.
My 360 just died and I was going to start working on a "sleeper build" to put inside its old case. This is a great find
Holy shit I would totally buy one
I'm digging the new benchmark layout.
Also, consider adding Alan Wake 2 to your benchmarked games.
G'day Random,
I hope you, Sophie, Harry & the rest of your family... OH sorry plus Dave a Wonderful Christmas & Happy New Year
This would be great for a NAS build!!
This thing would be dope for an all in one emulation machine!
Yeah definitely
I feel like it would be best used for a server and add in a raid card would be ABLE TO USE 2.5 IN SSDS AND HAVE FAST STORAGE
That thing is actually pretty cool. Might be pretty good for a multimedia station
Or it would be if the motherboard had any SATA ports for traditional 2.5in HDD and ODDs.
Your only solution for a multimedia station is to use the PCIe slot with a SATA splitter, and rely purely on integrated graphics. This shouldn't be a problem if you're using it for multimedia and not gaming.
yes, i'm planning to buy one to use as a HTPC, ... AND as a NAS.
@@TheSpotify95 that's why I said multimedia and not gaming. I'd have an entirely different setup for gaming if I were to get one of these
that fan looks huge
sometimes I cant even tell if I'm watching RandomGaminginHD or ETA Prime. you both are my favorites for a reason
Price to Performance, that is a great deal. Very exciting stuff. Can't wait for the AM5 "G" series APUs' . . . . . any news on that?
Thanks for the review. Just curious if you have measured idle power consumption from the AC line ?
Eight cores in that form factor, with a working x16 PCIe slot, for that price? That thing could make the basis for a very nice small home server.
Looks like a great little board, but the lack of any sata is a little disappointing. Would have been nice to see at least one sata connector
Maybe it has thunderbolt? So you could plug in a speedy external drive?
wow thats uncanny and rare sight, but it works and might even inspired for different builds
I’m gonna build this with the NZXT h210. I like the cpu solution and I can plan on using the front of the case for gpu cooling.
THAT HEATSINK 😨
Yeah, I use Lenovo Legion Pro 5 (2023) with this CPU and it’s extremely hot during gaming. Temperatures at high 80 in Silent mode and hitting 100 degrees ceilings in Performance mode
Is there an option to disable the onboard Graphics in the BIOS when you have a discrete card on as I've read that lowers temps in other Ryzens 7s with onboard graphics? Would be worth a check and an update one way or the other.
7:14 We could always use an NVME to Sata adapter via the mobo or 4060ti SSD edition for those 4tb+ drives
This is a fan that comes with a computer
I think it make a lot of sense i'm a little put of with the lpddr‚ but i find having to upgrading the MTB and the CPU at the same time is common.
Perfect for a mini sleeper 👍.
I wonder if these mobile chips benefit from tuning the PBO settings the same way it does on desktop chips like a 5800x
You can put a M.2 SATA Controller on a M.2 slot and then you can connect up to 6 2,5".SATA drives but you can't use the heatsink amymore.
one thing i am always curious about with these laptop cpus and mobos is if there is support for overclocking/ undervolting. you could certainly ease your temp troubles by setting up some parameters while keeping your clock speed high
This reminds me of the Erying boards with the 11th and 12th gen laptop CPUs. But only this looks to be done right. Any problems with drivers?
I would very much like to see what GPU the igpu is comparable to as well as a comparison for the cpu. I am actually thinking about this board, because it doesn't seem like a bad deal.
With *32 MB of L3 cache* , sort of surprised that everyone is not praising the L3 ❤
For productivity, BD770i and/or 7745HX cpu might be nicely performant 👍
Kindest regards, friends and neighbors.
This motherboard might look great in piano case
Interesting, can you replace the heatsink with a traditional tower heatsink; maybe with a better solution?
This is something I wouldn't mind seeing more of from companies, even if I do take some pride in my ability to assemble... I just seems, well, convenient.
I wonder how this would fare with something beefier, and also more CPU taxing titles - selfishly, Baldur's Gate 3 for instance (seems like all my favorite benchmarky guys forgot about the game of the year, huh?)
Regarding the CPU temps (which are totally fine and by design for Zen 4), was this with or without some active fans in the chassis you installed the motherboard in?
Other than that, this seems to be a prime candidate for a SFF PC I wanna build for my living room.
It's scary how close it is to something like a 5800x despite being a (one generation newer) laptop APU; slightly slower at stock but faster with a good OC. I'm seeing some definite potential for a living room gaming/media build!
I've checked monisforum website...this board does not allow oc
It is close to 7700, much faster that 5800x
If u get the chance can u take a look at the i9 model I would like to see what it is capable of
Genuinely wished you had tried the Intel version of this board as was looking into these for a new itx build.
Im super interested in the Minisforum BD790i. Having a 16 core 32 thread cpu in such a small package is crazy. And it costs a little less than a ryzen 9 7950x by itself and this unit includes a MOBO.
same, including thoughts on price. I just found it today
the problem is, you'll have to discard the CPU if your mobo fails.
theres no salvaging that CPU from a soldered on board.
@sc9433 Obviously. But from what I understand, CPUs generally last longer than mobos. So the mobo is more likely to fail first. In this case, imo if you already have to buy a new mobo, you may as well buy it on a new platform if available and get a new CPU with it anyway. But in either case I'm sure this has some kind of warranty, and I rarely ever hear about CPUs or Mobos failing unless they are super budget poorly made motherboards. Especially ones set up as an all in one unit like this one should be fine.
I would love to see this board with a 7840HS because of the 780M. As the 780M is capable of "real" gaming at 1080p you wouldnt need a discrete GPU and could use the PCIe slot for something else (like putting in an Intel NUC ^^).
This seems like a much more slick and polished counterpart of those Erying motherboards with Intel laptop CPUs on them.
I remember my friend who has an Alienware with a 7745HX CPU
I had him perform some benchmarks and it actually isn't too far off from a desktop 7700, if not on the mark. Which is impressive, since the 7700 and 7700x can compete or exceed in terms of raw performance vs something like a stock 5900x
A small chip with a ton of punch behind it
that's because the 7745 is a 7700x delidded and relatively underpowered. same goes for the 7945, it's a 7950x. problem is, how much of a performance unleash will the almost double TDP give when compared to the laptop counterpart?
if set to auto tdp in bios, the 7745 boosts to 120w, basically the same power use of a 7700x. problem is, being a mobile cpu, the VRM on the mb and the software behind it must be top notch, otherwise you're gonna run into trouble with games not properly optimized. let's see how this plays out, if minisforum is able to make an actually good bios for once, it could be the go to for most SFF builds.
Can you review the new ar900i ?
this could be good for cheaper prebuilts with great cpu performance...i'm saving this for sure
Wish there were options like $300 for the latest 6core chips,or $200 for earlier say Ryzen 6000 8core chips, awesome video though
nice video
Nice
Performance release, is there an unperformant release?
Did you check the PCIe Slot? My Board seems only to deliver PCIe 1.0/1.1... checked with CPU-Z, GPU-Z and HWiNFO64... idle or full load... it always just shows PCIe 1.0/1.1 x16... GPU used is an Inno3d RTX 4070 Ti X3 OC.
Well, verified the "seems" to "uses" in the meantime... Made an Aida64 GPGPU Benchmark Run in the Meantime which shows 3188Mb/s Memory Read and 3218Mb/s Write... which is MUCH to low for an RTX 4070 Ti... -.-
Seems they have a "little" Bug in their UEFI Bios...
Now we wait for a Wolfgang video on this, the idle power draw probably is very low
I would be interested to see what the system with an RTX 4080 or 4090 does in terms of FPS in 1440p or 4k
Try adding custom cooler.
I would've probably removed that M.2 cooler and get some ssd with a passive cooler on it and cool it with the 120mm fan.
Thinking about this board but does PBO work with this?
Would an updraft or down draft fan orientation be better here?
I just found this today from another channel. the 8 core is not available naymore, but the 16 core is also steal. The package is slightly cheaper to buy than a 7950x CPU and we know how much AM5 boards are. The board might not have Rebar support but I don't plan to buy high end GPUs. I just need high core count for browsing and Handbrake encoding
It would make a great stocking stuffer. 😂
They shud give 7645hx option aswell for 6c gaming
$249-289 will be decent
I don’t need it but I want it so cool!
Hello, I was looking at the installation video on Minisforum website and it looks like you have the cpu fan installed backwards. It looks like air should be pulled away from the heatsink rather blown on it. The thumbnail for their video has it installed the way you have it, but in the actual video they have it reversed. I'm not an expert, just sharing what I saw on their website. Cheers!!
I like the idea of having feature rich laptop APU and blasting it with 70W of power. It just shows how limiting the form factor of laptops is.
I love this motherboard!
If i buy this, i could mount my noctua nh-15 on it?
no, this a soldered laptop cpu. completely different socket and mounting.
@@Digi20 Thank you very much!
When you want the power of a laptop with the portability of a desktop.
I see what you did there.
cmon, its a mini itx that fits snuggly into your grandma's cookie box.
"...using cooler the size of my head." ROFL 🤣🤣🤣
Why would they use the 7745HX instead of the 7840HS or 7940HS
Would be better if the board use the ryzen 7 7840u that has the 780m, that igpu is a beast, even runs alan wake 2 a game a lot of dgpu struggle
I was gonna get one of these if they made the 7950x version, but they did not release it and instead this slug. So i built a sff build with a 7800x3d instead.
I was looking at one of these to bulld in a hyte revolt 3 case. It needs to be 100 bucks less in my opinion. You can buy 7600x and cheap am5 itx mother board cheaper than this and the desktop cpu will out do it. Not to mention you have to use less powerful laptop ram and it costs more.
Ryzen 7 5700g and asrock b550 mini itx ac, total up to 260$ new , has wifi and has sata ports could be a fine itx build but this idk seems not too bad but your getting a laptop cpu
You should unlock the fps on elden ring, there's many ways to do it, if you do just mention what was used to unlock it- I use Flawless Widescreen. Seems a bit pointless using it as a benchmark without that. Love all your videos, I hope you never stop :D
Thanks :) and I’ll look into it. Was never sure if it affected the physics or anything?
I can hardly wait for AMD to release the mobile chips with 3D cache and hope that MinisForum will release a model with one of those CPU's
At one end, I am also of the mind that i expected better thermals from a notebook Ryzen cpu, especially with the mass of that big cooler (unless the cpu is actually under the small one). Granted, i also expect notebook makers to still fail it by putting crappier cooling still.
hi may ask a favor try again gt 1030 low profile vcard again for 2023 and 2024 games maybe? TY!
