Parents Mourn Nashville School Shooting Victims

- Anguished parents are grieving for the Nashville school shooting victims. Under the banner #thisisnineyearsold, they are posting images of their own 9-year-old kids as a way to mourn the slain students, who were all 9 years of age. Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus and William Kinney were killed during the shooting. Staff members Katherine Koonce, Cynthia Peak and Mike Hill were also killed during the massacre.

As a kid 30 years ago, it never would had occurred to us that being a teacher would be an occupational hazard.
@Michael Phan Kids were slapped and hit with a stick or ruler 45 years ago in school,what do you say to that generation of kids who were under the watch of teachers? Many kids were sexual assaulted in school by teachers and day care workers till this day.

My generation was the last to face corporal punishment. I went to grammar school in the70's and early 80's. Remember when parents would advise to tell bullies off or fight back, I would fear telling a kid that today.

I'm about a 30 minute drive away from that school. It upset me to hear that. 9 year olds that had their whole lives ahead of them and 60/61 year olds who had friends, family members, and possibly alive parents who cared for them died tragically and unfortunately. My prayers go to the families of all 6 victims. I'm in high school, and I pray to God that this never happens at my school, since school should be a safe place for kids to be at, learn, and have fun with friends and make memories, not a place to lose lives and make traumatic memories.

I am surprised that no shooter ever goes into the nursery of a hospital to kill newborn babies. Seems that would be EVEN EASIER since unlike the school children they cannot run away.

My youngest just turned 9 and when she came home from school when this happened I held her so tight. I cried because these parents of these angels won't be able to do so anymore. I'm praying for the families and everyone that had to go through all this.

I don’t often cry, but I actually did while watching this. This is absolutely horrible. I know lots of elementary schoolers, have a kindergarten brother, pre K cousin, and many other young cousins. I acknowledge how any of my family members’ trips to school can be the last. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims. Unimaginable losses
It is awful. You think "this could be their last day" when a soldier leaves for a war zone and when a first responder goes to work, people shouldn't have to think it when the kids go to school! I am so sorry you and so many others have to live with these worries. It's not right.

i cant imagine being one of those kids, i feel so bad for them. today at my school there was a lockdown, nothing came of it, and that was scary enough, i cant imagine how they all felt in their last moments
@star-Iv2ey, I was sort of in a lockdown at one of my schools and it had 3 programs. The behavioral program had a lockdown and my program didn't know about it and my bus driver was got really angry at me and my friends for being a little late for going out to the buses. She threatened to leave us at school☹️😢.

I went to college near the school. I graduated years ago and now I’m a mother. I couldn’t stop crying when I saw the body cam footage. My heart hurts for the families that lost their loved ones. I am so, so sorry. I keep hugging my son and I just don’t want to let go.

I don't know how parents cope with the worry every school day - will your child come home? Know that I hope and pray they do, that they never experience what these 3 kids and these 3 adults experienced. Things have to change. The families of those lost in this awful situation have my deepest sympathies, I'll be praying for you all.

My little girl just turned 9 yrs old....this is soul-crushing! THANK YOU for focusing on these precious babies and the teachers that died rather than spotlighting the one that took their lives. We live in Springfield so this just hit super close. Jesus be with all of these families.

I cried yesterday when I heard about this. My heart is so broken for these parents. I have a 2.5 year old a newborn and I can't even imagine sending them to school and never seeing my babies again. Something has to give for our children. My kid is getting close to school age and I can't bare the thought of sending her to school.

I have an almost 10 year old Niece and seeing this tragedy occur yesterday made me weep and think about the possibility that my nieces and nephews might have to go through that one day. No one should have died yesterday in that shooting, those lives will never be brought back.

As a kid who still goes to school in Tennessee, I would just like to say how horrible this truly is. No kid should have to go through active shooter drills every month because of the fear that one day somebody might just come in and start killing people. I am so sorry for those six families and anybody else affected by this, school should be a place of learning and where kids make happy memories, not where you lose the lives of your closest friends.

I am so great full that 45yrs ago my dad came over here to England to marry my mum and not her going over there as originally planned. Because they had me 41yrs ago and now I'm a mother and I can only imagine how terrified parents must be every day just sending their babies to school! I don't know how they find the strength to do that! It must be horrific to live with that fear everyday. My heart goes out to you all ❤

I’m pregnant with my first and I have many siblings. One of my sisters that I basically raised is about to turn 9. I couldn’t imagine.. my deepest condolences😔
