Sabaton also did an English version of this song, but it was done from a different perspective. A Lifetime of War is more about the general European perspective about by the thirty years war whereas En Livstid I Krig tells the story from the perspective of a Swedish soldier during the thirty years war.

Both lyrics are powerful, but the Swedish one is so much more personal:
      Swedish (translated)
      For war it can
      Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
      But who will mourn me?
      So see me as
      A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
      But who will miss me?
      English:
      Has man gone insane?
      A few will remain
      Who'll find a way
      To live one more day
      Through decades of war?
      It spreads like disease
      There's no sign of peace
      Religion and greed
      Cause millions to bleed
      Three decades of war...

This song is about an important part of Swedish history ( the 30 year war) and the crowd was mostly Swedish, which makes it easy to understand their engagement. Additionally Joakim told the audience that they will make it a competition between Stockholm and Gothenburg and the better singing crowd will be in the video. So everybody was giving a little extra to win and i guess it was a close call in the end.

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life.
The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it.
This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it.
The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).

Was truly epic to be at that concert, a memory for life. This tune in Swedish really packs a punch. The song emphasizes the destructive nature of war and how it has brought Europe down in flames. Despite the immense suffering and loss caused by war, there are always a few who survive and strive to find a way to live another day. Sabaton is literally the second best live-bands I've ever seen, and I've seen them 9 times and counting, They even kicked ass the first two times I saw them when the stage was barely big enough to fit the whole band!
The only other band I've seen that beats their live show is Rammstein!
I wasn't at this particular performance, it's a bit far from where I live, but I've seen them perform this song in swedish like this at least 7 times, and the atmosphere in the crowd specially when they let the crowd take over and do all the singing is indescribeable! I'ts one of the most amazing experiences you'll ever have!

Thank you so much, Stacey! This brought back memories of the Cologne concert last year and i wanted to shout "Noch ein Bier" (another beer) at the screen 😅. I don't know if this is just a thing among the German Sabaton fans or not, but it was so much fun to chant that in the pauses between the songs and have one of the stage crew come out and bring Joakim a beer. Eventually he would leave the stage and have one of the other guys drink the beer or they'd skip the pause 😂. Awesome band 🍻🤘🏻!

All of Sabaton's band members have a burning interest in history and that's why they write such good songs when they know the history that they then turn into a song. That's why no other band can do it, as they don't have the real interest in history that Sabaton has. Livstid i Krig is about when Sweden was involved in the 30 years war and it is true what they sing that no one remembers the ordinary soldiers and no names are mentioned in the history books. But only important commanders and the king. The song also fits the soldiers in different countries who went to war and died, so no one but the family remembers them.
If you want to see how Sabaton gets a large audience in Woodstock in Poland to sing along, then watch Sabaton - Swedish Pagans - Live at Wacken Open Air 2019, the audience should be 1 million. czcams.com/video/NWnuSZ5pwNA/video.html

Hello Stacey, I just found your channel, because of Sabaton, of course 😅. Watched all your Sabaton reactions just now and I really like your take on their music, so refreshing and emotional. Sabaton is a great band and masters in evoking feelings in people. I've seen them live and every concert is an emotional, wonderful and funny experience.
So far you've been listening to mostly emotionally packed ballads. If you're ready to follow the band there are really energetic songs in their discography ( as a matter of fact you got yourself into a huge rabbit hole 😂).
It's good to watch them live, because they really bring it live .
    My picks would be:
    "40:1" Woodstock Poland 2012
    "Great War" Great Tour, 2020
    "Night Witches" Great Tour 2020
"The Last Stand" official music video
"Uprising", double reaction - official music video and live from Woodstock Poland 2012.
    That's for starters😁
Sabaton is celebrating 25 Anniversary this year. Their discography consists of 10 albums (11 if you count "Symphony To End All War"), EP's and singles, so there's a lot to listen to.
I really like everyone of your reactios to the greatest band ther is. You got yourself a new fan🤘🔥🤘🔥

    Percival- Poalnd/ Pan slavic
    Arkona-Russia
    Rune-Serbia
    Mägo de Oz-Spain
Po' Metra Crijeva- Croatia (the band name means half a meter of guts)
    Manntra-Croatia
Brkovi- Croatia (more of a punk band but look up their song "Ovce" a MAGICAL blend of rap, metal a, punk and folk influences)
Metaklapa- Croatia (This one is weird ... they do covers of metal songs in traditional Dalmatian singing style .. for example they did Aces high)
Dubioza Kolektiv- Bosnia & Hertzegovina (DO NOTE! This band is called a band with no genre for a reason! they varry from Regge R&B To Folk-Metal-Punk ... compare their "Space song" and "No escape from Balkans")
    Arka'n Asrafokor- TOGO
(also worth of note is Skinflint from Botswana but they don't ussualy have much folk elements)
Al-Namrood- Saudi Arabia (They played metal when it was punishable by death... IT DON'T GET MORE HARDCORE THAN THAT!)
Hassak- Kazakhstan (it's an ethno band but listen to their song Amanat and tell me it don't belong on a metal concert)
    The Hu- Mongolia
    Nine Treasures - China/Inner Mongolia
    DreamSpirit- China
    Wagakki band- Japan
    Nini music- Taiwan
    BLOODYWOOD- India
    Alien weaponry- New Zealand
    Shepherds Reign- New Zealand/Samoa

You probably realise this by now but I'll say it anyway; you misunderstand the context of the song, it's about a specific war Sweden was involved in, where literally generations of fathers and sons went to war and were killed on the battlefield. It's not written about soldiers in general. But of course it will apply to soldiers in general as well.

    A lifetime of war
I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to figtht
    And the world burned

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time

    Far from home
    Baptized and die in battle

    And the world burned

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

And when my time runs out
    Who cares then?
    They fight on
Does a soldier get a worhty end?
    To fall asleep
    Pass away
    And never wake up

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

This is a deeply patriotic song for those of us who are willing to lay down our lives to protect our homeland, military background or not. Oh, and yes, they were singing in Swedish.

No it's not, the song is about the leaders sending people out to die for causes that doesn't make any sense for the soldiers, then the sacrifice is rapidly forgotten when it's over. Most soldiers were peasants that had to leave their families to fight for other peoples gain without getting anything back. The main theme is, there is no glory in war, no heroes, just unpaid sacrifice.

    • @E33Tpro
      @E33Tpro Před 3 měsíci

@@thedryparn1279 What the song is about and how you look at it are two different things, you obviously look at it as meaningless sacrifice while others understand it and look at it as protecting your homeland by keeping the war elsewhere and sacrificing less countrymen in the process than if the war was fought at home, keeping our way of life and the freedoms we have is the payment.

And the lyrics pretty spot on word for word so you're not missing any context, that's why it also doesn't rhyme in english, Sabaton usually does that.

Stacey, I believe you said that you like exploring new music and artists. There's a young man named Dimash who has an absolutely beautiful voice that I believe you would enjoy listening to. A good introduction to him would be the song SOS performed at the Slavic Bazaar in Russia. Hope you get a chance to react to it.

lol i know this is a sad song, we lost maybee 20% of our men during the long time we were at war wich is part of what this song isd about a lifetime of war, we had a time of almost 300 years of war, with a few years of peacy inbetween but the cost was horrible for us. and concidering how many times we lost people coz of plague or years of frost, tbh is a miracle we still excist as a people.

This song is more or less valid for all times and nations.
The translation is decent, it gets the message across, but no lyrics translate perfectly.
A soldier is not only destroyed by death, all sorts of injuries from "minor" ones, like bad hearing or knee pain, all the way to lost limbs and brain trauma leaving them very much reduced. not to mention PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face when trying to deal with the horrors of war.
