“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

If a new client or someone waited until i done there nails and then said they had no cash, i would call the police. Its defrauding. I have had clients that have been genuine and i have had scammers too. The time i called the police was when a client got extreme stiletto covered in swarovski crystals and to my surprise when the police arrived she magically produced my payment. Needless to say, she tried to come back to me, no chance! 👎

    Very interesting topic.❤
I am a home based nail technician and I had a lot of similar situations. I am still building my clientele and I can't be so strict as I want to be.
    I encountered things like:
-clients saying that they can be late because they have a job and they work late. And what I do is easy (not a real job) and I should not complain about them being late.
-client who come with her kids and they were an absolute nightmare. Rolling on the floor, pulling on the table and everything on top, etc.
-a client who wanted a nude set with no nail art and after I finished, she said that it's to plain and she didn't like the color.
-a client who came with her infant baby and had to breastfeed and pick up the baby up over an over again.
-clients that don't honor the appointments
-clients that are late. The first memorable incident I had was with a client that came one hour late but then she was always on time.
-clients who want intricate nail art for cheap
-clients that want to smoke during the appointment
And the list could go on. But I wanted to say that I am still here, doing nails because I love it. It is my passion.
I am an accountant but I choose the nail buissness, even if a earn way less, because I truly love it. I am confident that with patience and hard word I will achieve all my goals.
Thank you for all this amazing videos, I learned a lot from them!
Ps: Excuse my writing, English is not my first language.😁

Hi hun, I also work from home with very few clients atm but you can be strict with them right from the start. At the end of the day you are running a business and if you don't set your standards now you will only make more work for yourself later down the line. My neighbour is a client of mine and a friend. I confirmed her appointment the day before as I do with everyone else and have always done with her and one day she strolled in half hour late so I said I'm sorry but I'm not going to be able to complete your infills today, your appointment was at 10 and you are 30mins late. She then said well you've got no one in after me and you work from home to which I explained that just because I don't have another client after her I have an organised schedule which involves all the other important things that helps run my business like updating my accounts, contact other clients to remind them of their appointments for following day etc etc and then a school run and time to be with my family in the afternoon /evening. She wasn't happy at all but never did it again. Friends and family are the worst for taking the mik so if you can set your boundaries with them then you can do it with anyone. I also ask for a 50 % non refundable booking fee to secure their appointment which has to be paid within 24 hours or that time/date is open to someone else until they do pay. This in itself has helped me straight off dwindle out those that would be loyal clients and are loyal to me still now and won't mess you about to the ones that are chancers and are going to cause you grief. Also if you can offer PayPal for payment etc that allows for booking fees, outstanding balances etc and covers you should there ever be a dispute of any kind. I don't do stress, I'm very much these are my rules, policies etc the ball is in your court type of person. It all sounds harsh but iv created an understanding with my clients from get go, they are loyal to me I am loyal to them and tbf I'm also aware life can throw a spanner in the works on occasions to so I will be understanding if something comes up. We are all human and some things are beyond our control but set your boundaries now. Be strong 💪 hun you got this and can build a strong business. Xx

I get my clients to wear disposable gloves if they need to go the the restroom during a service - usually it's during their prep. I also have one client who's been with me for about 4 yrs, 90% of the time she'd be late for her appointments so I learnt to just slot her last in for the day & we're both ok with that. In saying that she never misses her appointments & always pays, so I'm ok with that.

Great Video Topic! These things can happen regularly. It seems being a Nail Tech or even a Hair Tech, some clients to do not take you and your business seriously. They think nothing of missing an appointment or showing up late. I had a brochure that outlined my services and also my policies for being my client.
    1. I'm with Tracey all the way on this point. I give 15 minutes to show up. I would either make them reschedule their appointment to the next available or I would shorten their service; they will just get the basics, no foo foo-in order for ME to stay on track. I would also charge a $25 no show fee. If they booked another appointment, I would tack it on to the current service. If a client no-showed 3x they were "fired". You always have people who are waiting to get on your schedule who will respect you and the service you provide.
    2. I have not really had this issue to be honest. I would tack on the balance to their next service if they were a regular client. A New Client makes it a little more tricky since you have not had the time to build a relationship or trust with them. I had a credit card terminal at my station so that helped alleviate the not getting paid situation.
    3. I had to establish or the salon had a policy not to bring their child(ren) to their service appointment. The distraction in the salon and to my client twisting, turning to keep track of their child(ren) will throw of your time and put you behind. Time is money and most of us have our service(s) scheduled to maximize income potential.
    4. I would always have my client use the restroom prior to starting their service (especially doing pedicures). Depending on your client, they still may need to take a "break" but not washing their hands is not an option. I would even sanitize their hands when they sat back down just to be sure.
    5. Sick clients should be sent home and rescheduled once they are well. Being an independent operator you don't have sick pay. If you really want to work on them, have them wear a mask and you wear one too.
    6. If your sick most of your regular clients will be understanding. But, you do have the selfish ones that want their service no matter if your too ill to even see straight. Stick to your guns, tell them you can try to get them in with another Nail Tech in the salon or they can find someone else on their own. But I would seriously considered not keeping them on as a client.

I fell like late and no show customers are the reason why a lot of artists are asking for a deposit when they make an appointment and I don’t blame them. And its great for those who try to skip out on payment, you have their credit card info already.

Unruly kids in a salon can be a liability. My nieces babysitter brought in her baby, held her on her lap, and like all kids, she was fast as lightning, knocked over my acetone, splashing it in her eye. A+, Habib! You deal with problems pretty much exactly as I did when I had my pet shops. Different area of service, same customer approach. But...when I had my pet shops and someone came in for a small purchase, fell in love with an expensive puppy, etc... I would NEVER take a post-dated check. BECAUSE: back then, a post-dated check was legally NOT a check. It became a promissory note. What I would do (for customers I KNEW were regulars) was tell them to date the check currently. Then I would hold it until they asked me to have it post-dated. I put a sticky note right on it, put it under my cash drawer (later in my bank bag), and held it until they asked. That way IF it was a problem in cashing, the laws made it collectible as a check, not as a promissory note. Just a word that you might want to check into....pun intended. 😁. And... I NEVER had a problem. 😁

Half of what you said is correct in the situations you stated and half is correct of what Tracey said... Good video though. I have dealt with bad checks, post dated checks, late/sick clients and I have fired a few... It is hard in any situation. I am at home this whole week due to a strange thing called Nephrotic Syndrome and had to cancel my entire week... Just have to keep telling myself that when clients gets cranky that I am "a person and not a machine" and I have to be well or I will maybe not be able to return to service them at all.

    *Using my boyfriends account*
This past July, during the Carr fire in Redding, our salon was broken into the same weekend I ended up delivering my son. All my established clients knew prior that I’d be taking 2 weeks off to be with baby and we’d adjust accordingly depending on when baby came. They took about 60 of my young nails gel polishes,a box of glitters and my box full of stamp plates and jewels 😢 I had very little to do what my clients wanted, which was gel polish. So when I called to inform them/turn away new callers the responses were really upsetting to me. It went a little like this,” I’m so sorry that happened but when do you think you’ll be back to do my nails.” So I’d follow with “ well I also had my baby this weekend so I’m not sure when my next trip to Redding will be to start replenishing what was lost, it might be a couple extra weeks until I’m in a better place” and their responses were “ so what do I do until then?” That was what the people whose nails I’d never once done would ask... uhh go where you’ve been going because I just had about $2,000 worth of equipment stolen and just gave birth in the midst of the worst fire to hit our town!!! I was so disappointed in the lack of compassion and understanding coming from folks in the small town I live in. I felt like I had to try and rush my healing and get back to work because I’d get calls almost everyday with ladies begging to get in.
Fast forward about 3 weeks and I’m back to work. “Gosh how are you back to work already with your baby, he’s so young! I couldn’t have been working right after giving birth. “Make sure you get lots of rest, but let’s make sure I’m on your books for 2 weeks” I held my tongue but I so badly just wanted to cry and yell at every one of those women” if y’all wouldn’t have called me almost every freaking day asking me when I’d be back because you needed me to do your nails instead of letting me heal and spend time with my new baby..
I truly have very gracious and awesome clients but at the time I didn’t like too many of them. I couldn’t have prepared for anything that happened the following weeks after the break in and birth of my son. It was a huge time of learning to say the least

I’m still pretty new in the nail game and so far haven’t had to deal with intentionally rude lateness. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t comment on the Starbucks (my clients should know what to get me if they ever did stop) but I would say no nail art or possibly even no hard gel base if it’s a gel mani. If it’s extensions then I would limit them to the colors that looks best on top and tell them when they see there at the proper time them they have access to all the colors. I did have a client recently that took 45 minutes to pick her color and talk about design. When you average 2 hours for the type of appointment I do for her it turned it into a 3 1/2 hour appointment. I still don’t know what I’m going to say next time she comes in :(

When I used to work in a salon we didn't have a policy for kids. So these women would come in with their kids and expect the receptionist or someone who wasn't busy to watch their kid. That said kid would pick up a Christmas ornament from the tree the mother would tell him to put it down, not get up, just tell him. And what does he do, throws it on the floor and it shatters everywhere. Also there were times where they would bring snacks for the kids and they would throw the food everywhere on the floor. I say no kids right on all of my social media, so that there is no excuse for someone to show up with their kid.

I have a question ! For the situation of the new client who didn't have money to pay the service & once got home didn't give you no credit card information etc. So basically didn't paid you, should you or should you not alert other nail tech about this client?

@9:05... but you already did their nails... what are you gonna do.. tell them to sit back down to remove your work 😆💁‍♀️🥴 I get why techs ask for the money up front.. Or tell them the price it’ll cost them for the set at the beginning.. that way during/after the process there’s no questions.. if they wanna add something they know what it’ll cost.! Reminds me of the time I walked in to get my nails done I had been there many times before always got the same set basic white tips clear acrylic with gel top coat (maybe add a design on the ring finger) but I knew what it was gonna cost me.. plus tip well that day they changed there prices but there was no signs up saying that.. until the very end im sitting @ the drying station 🧐 I noticed a piece of paper hung on the wall with tiny font w/the new pricing list.. 👀🤨 🤔 so what used to cost me $25-30 including tip I now had to pay $50 not including tip 👀😑😒😞😦😤💩🙆‍♀️🤦‍♀️ this was years ago but I’ll never forget it

I'm not a nail tech, but as a customer I think if a client tells you they can't pay, then you should remove the work that was done. Logically, you couldn't walk out of a store without paying, why think you could a nail salon or private nail technician? I wouldn't even think about going to get my nails done if I didn't have the $. You wouldn't go to a store without your $, why would you go to get your nails done without making sure you had $?

Oh - as for kids, I have a fab story to tell. This client no longer comes to me because I explained to her exactly what you guys said. The service becomes too disruptive, frustrating & goes into overtime. She started off with one child, usually her husband would come & do a swap & take the child & would she would then book her follow up appt at 5-6 weeks, ugh!!! Then she had child #2......that's when it got ridiculous!!! She came to the appointment with a screaming child, as soon as she sat in the chair I told her "I think baby needs a change honey!" She says, "oh, really? Oh I haven't got any nappies (diapers) in his pram, not sure if I've got them in the car" "Where's your car"? "Oh, I parked several houses down today" grrrrrrrrrr😠 So, I held the screaming baby racing down the street with her, racing back home to my salon after she found them, then she had to change him & asked if she can throw the pooey nappy in my salon bin 😳😳😳, I said no of course, baby continued to be unsettled, more disruptions because now she had to breastfeed him, meanwhile asking if I can do French nails for her.......needless to say I refused & quickly tried to finish her service with a quick infill & plain colour I struggled to paint due to her squirming child in her lap. The following time she came with both children, her screaming baby again & a fidgety toddler touching my cosmetics stand. It was at that appointment I thought that's it!!! Next time she tries to book, I'm going to tell her nicely, no kids please. That was Feb......she's since gone elsewhere. No loss really

I foolishly gave her an option, she said oh I will come in anyway, mani/pedi, needless to say it was aweful driving into work and then my car was stuck at work, could not get it out, we had 8 inches more come down, had to have it towed out after trying to shovel it out, got soak and wet, got a ride home and wound up having to pay someone to tow my car out, and also started getting sick the next day! MY FAULT ALL THE WAY, next time The Salon is closed and that is that...

So the nail salon I just started working at doesn’t disinfect their pedicure tubs. In CA, we’re supposed to wash the tub with soap and water, rinse, fill the tub with water and add a hospital grade disinfectant, like barbicide, and run the jets for 10 min, then drain the water and rinse the tub again. They only spray the pedicure tub with All Purpose cleaner and rinse which is NOT okay. I haven’t said anything because I’m new and I don’t want to get fired :(

@@holliexbx5613 I agree, the things that can breed in the pipes of those chairs is very disturbing. The pedi chairs do take more time to disinfect but its better than making someone ill because of the disregard for protocol. I have only worked at one salon that had them and I made sure to follow the state mandated guidelines. I currently use a footsie bath with the plastic liners for my pedicures. Before that I used the dish tubs placed inside a garbage bag. When going to salon with those chairs its always good to ask questions and observe what is being done to disinfect after the service is over.

Since I work alone, it’s hard to keep up with late clients, last min appointments and 911 appointments and the list goes on! Clients would somewhat remember the outlined disclaimer so there wouldn’t be any misunderstandings. It’s all about working smarter and being as prepared. I am working on putting the disclaimer on my website. Customers will try to play themselves by saying “I didn’t know” then they would be lying! And who would want a lying client? Think about it 🤔 but I guess everyone tells “White lies” lol. But the disclaimer should be enforced. Helps me aloooottttt!!!
