- This is the dramatic moment a jet ski driver pulled off an incredible rescue of a big wave surfer at Nazaré in Portugal.
The drone footage shows professional surfer Lucas Chumbo being towed into a monster wave on November 20th.
After an impressive ride, the Brazilian exits the wave successfully and waits for his teammate Ian Cosenza to pick him up on the jet ski.
However, as Cosenza approaches Chumbo, another huge wave rolls towards them threatening to flatten them both in the impact zone.
Chumbo manages to grab onto the sled on the back of the jet ski and Cosenza accelerates as fast as he can towards the shore.
But the drama doesn't end there: the two are now pursued by a mass of white water travelling at 60 miles per hour which quickly catches the pair and swallows them up.
When something like this happens it generally doesn’t end well but against all odds, Cosenza manages to ride the jet ski out of the mountain of churning foam and get them both to safety.
The WSL (World Surf League) described this as “one of the craziest rescues ever seen.”
Chumbo is currently one of the best big wave surfers in the world.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, became famous worldwide in 2011 when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78 feet.

Because the dude lost a finger in shark bite from previous summer
Laws of humanity and the universe clearly state the man driving that jet ski never has to buy another beer for the rest of his life.

The Jet Ski Rescuer is 'Ian Cosenza'. Ian and others like him are amazing people - Thank you for what you do!!!
Not related to George Costanza
I have no idea how this popped up on my feed, but that was the most insane daring $hi+ I've seen probably ever seen. Damn that was adrenaline pumping!!!
Augustine Vela yes indeed😀
Well done ian we love you
Jet ski maintenance isnt free, fuel isnt free, jet ski skill isnt free. . . who pays these awesome drivers? At Pismo in CA, you can "prepay" the tow guy or by the tow.
These guys are so fearless. I can’t even imagine being out in water like that.
They certainly give us an exciting show though.
dude on the jet ski really sharp with his senses. He saw whats going on and reacted perfect without loosing time real pro there
Snowboarders: I ride mountains
Surfers: I ride moving mountains
Brilliant...'moving mountain's...classic
Because their gear Will float them up and out of the 20ft of snow the avalanche just dumped on them
Avalanche....
Chach Cadi what if the mountaintop takes after you
Most gnarly.
Surfing v snowboarding = snowboarding. Just.
Big wave surfing v snowboard = no fucking contest. Go give them a try and find out.
Balls of steel. The timing was ridiculously close, but these guys were born to do this. Exciting to watch.
there's one of the most well-deserved high-five
Not gonna lie... When the high five hit, it brought a tear to my eye.
Same, imagine the feeling of rescuing someone in a war zone or a kid from a burning building 👍
Hahahaha ☺️😎
Not gonna lie I didnt even notice until the 5th roll back..
it was noticeable too in the midsts of danger high five prevails.
This is as confusing as tommy wiseau's emotions
Is there a tip jar on that jet ski?

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
There should be and minimal amount accepted in the thousands!
Yes, if you pause the video at 0:58 you can see it hanging off the back of his seat.
These jet ski recovery drivers are the forgotten heroes
Es el teem son todos x momentos.
That speed of that rip tide after the wave finished breaking was absolutely awesome
Terrifying to say the least...
And then they turn around and face the waves again!
vipahman “I’ll just go drop you off where I picked you up”
Going back to see if they can find the board.
Yeah, right? Where in the hell are they going?!
Board is attached to surfer being dragged behind them, theyre going back for round 2 100%!!! Legends
@@skateboardz you suppose he could have broken his leg? Must have been a pain dragging a surf board at 20 mph in choppy water
Everything was awesome in this video. Surfing, size of wave, timing of rescue, speed of waves vs speed of waves, and lastly high five while they are still in danger 👍👍👍
I personally think there is no other sport as risky and adventurous as wave surfing ! Thanks to guys like these and some real pro camera skills we can appreciate what these guys are capable of doing.. it's brutal and beautiful!!
Bull riding is more dangerous because it's similar to surfing like riding an untameable beast
@@again5162 ...yeah...but you can't breathe in 10 feet of white water....or being held down too long...and you could break anything if the wipeout is horrific....not to mention a fin cut , etc...Hell,just being in the Ocean and seeing something like that coming at you is enough to make one die for from fright!
cave diving ?
Remote skiing and snowboarding is more dangerous as you are in a more remote location with less readily available assistance.
Not to mention heights are more dangerous than water.
@@NopeSecret imagine the same, but if anything goes wrong you drown, with no possibility of making it out alive, alone, in the dark, and sometimes it's decades before your body is recovered, while everybody knows it's there (if it's recovered at all)
Going through something like this really makes you feel alive
"Those aren't mountains, those are waves!"
Well played!!
Waves can change the waters so much. Incredible. Great surfing!
I’ve been to Nazare, Portugal (beautiful city) but never when they had waves like this!
The giant waves of Nazare can HAPPEN between November and March and it will always be necessary a storm in the sea (it can be the milles of distance), wind factor and then ALWAYS with the help of the Nazare Cannon.
Big Thumbs Up to the Camera Man for capturing this wonderful breath taking, irresistible, mouth watering, extra saucy, chocolate coated rescue of All Time. 👍👍👍
Gold medal for filming too!! Spectacular!
Legend has it people across the world felt the shock wave from the high five.
Thank you for showing the video with sound and without commentary
Probably one of the top 3 high-five moments of all time.
That's a Hell of a adrenaline ride!
Epic with the high-5 🤘
Both of those guys...balls of steel👍
To see this kind of trust and skill is moving honestly
Always impressive to see Nazaré waves high as skycraper.
I love the high five slap between the driver and the surfer about half way in...........Yea baby !! we made it!
Man, some serious skill on display to keep that jet ski upright in that wash, 👌.
Where and how do they draw in air? I don't know much about jetskis but it seems impressive to me that the motor didn't flood and die.
@@kleinbottled79 afaik they draw in water at the bottom. getting hit by the water jet the jetski uses to propel itself forward can actually be pretty dangerous, those things got a lot of power
@@kleinbottled79 The intake is at the front, it can take quite some water though before drowning.
Looked like a suspense movie scene
Jet ski driver: Nice save, right bro?!
Also Jet Ski Diver: Okay, let's go back in.
The key to that whole thing is the turn at the end TO GO BACK OUT THERE and catch another wave!!
"Brilliant"as cool as a cucumber, and then handing a low five to the surfer for surviving that extremely dangerous situation.Awesome rescue.
That was absolutely insane in every way. Crazy!! Those waves!! Who knew Portugal was a surfing location. 👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️💯💯💯
Probably most people and certainly every surfer. Portugal has been hosting world tour events for decades, has the biggest wave in the world, and is filled with surfing tourists so pretty famous i would say
@@miguelhannes875 well I'm not a surfer. I knew about Hawaii and Australia. I'm just saying to the average person. It's funny but I love the water, I am an avid Kayaker and always live near the water somewhere. And it's the first time I hear of it. Maybe I live in a hole. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Dachdogoriginal We're always learning 😊 Check CZcams channel: Maquina Voadora. They have been doing drone videos like this one for some years, best action you'll see, guaranteed!
Dang Ive never surfed in my life but this brought a smile to my face, freakin awesome.
Nice save wow
Respect! I nearly drown in the shower
Now, the question is... Who has the bigger balls? The Surfer.. or the guy who goes out there all day to rescue them?
Your mom
I've seen multiple big surfers in interviews saying operating the jet ski is much harder than the actual surfing.
Exactly
Both
Anyone can sit on their ass and squeeze a throttle. It requires more balls to ride a 3ft wave than it does to jetski.
The amazing thing here is the driver's intuition and concern. For him to immediately get there, then wait until the surfer has a good grip before fleeing.
Yes, Mother Nature is awesome and beautiful.
These lifeguards have huge balls. Thanks
thanks for leaving the sound of the sea which is the best music
"What!? You won't pay my price? Fine, I'm haulin' you back out to where I found you."
What a magical moment.
Amazing effort & control of the skii
"We play a dangerous game, you and I, and I respect you."
"But, *you go hungry tonight, you Beast of an Ocean!* 😎🤙"
🏄🏽♂️
I like that
The best description I heard from a big wave surfer was "imagine jumping out of a 4 story building, and then the building chases you down the street...."
Amazing rescue high five made more spectacular. Balls of steel lads :)
That Jet ski operator deserves a big Thank You 😃😃
Damn that gave me some SERIOUS anxiety jus watching it💯

Talk about clutch timing. Respect shown with the high five.
That riptide was terrifying. Looks like unswimmable water to me.
E B white water has a lot of air in it & yes it’s next to impossible to swim in 🤙
Chris Camgeni - I was afraid the pump on the jet ski was going to suck in too much air when he was in the wash. That would not have been good.
@@romn7601 & your Full of shit brother 💩,,there is way to Much Air & secondly ,if you don’t have a air vest on while your surfing 🏄♂️ these types of waves 🌊,you will drowned..I surf 🏄♂️ jaws in Maui Hawaii & I have first hand on what & how dangerous whit water is & can be.don’t be that guy ,,Much Maui Love 🌊🏄♂️🤙🌴

In the video you can see the professionalism they knew the challenge coming over them and their reaction is perfect only people that knows what they are doing can pull off this situations.
Wow! Great Driver!
that wave is so fast even the jetski cant outrun it
Carlos Andres Medrano - And high powered jet skis can easily exceed 60 MPH.
@@danmyers9372 80mph is doable, but unless water is calm riding that is quite rough, especially for the surfer in the back.
When you're running from the mobs and you trip but your homie comes back for you.
That’s simply the most awesome thing ever!!!
I met Lucas in Puerto Escondido , super nice guy
He's lucky. Props to the lifeguard. He wouldn't have made it to shore on his own.
Its was setup to catch him after every wave he rides
Looks like a scene from a movie

Presence of mind and quick decision and brave.. amazing
He took just a second too long to hook up to the ski, needed full throttle all the way after and a bit of luck too, what a rush that must have been!!
Looked like they were moving fast but in reality they were sitting still.
Damn. I can’t even handle how badass that rescuer is
Wow, that was intense. Good clip.
Nazare MEANS Nazareth....So? When you're there, doing this kind of shit? You know who to pray too.
Holy smokes, that takes guts, both of them...
Without music this video seems that much more daunting but also so much more intense
So good to have natural sounds
Bad time to realize you forgot to put gas in the Jet ski...
