    My favourite band, imo their newer stuff is easier to get into the band than the older one, but their old records are pure gold, a fusion of prog and neoclassical metal, I heavily recommend you to listen to some of their old stuff from Divine Wings of Tragedy or Damnation Game

    Used this song to get one of my buddies hooked on SX. Iconoclast as an album is easily their "heaviest" , if you want another Iconoclast song I would recommend either Children of a Faceless God for something groove heavy or When All is Lost for their kinda ballad-y epic. Or from their newest release Underworld I would pick Legend, best song on the album imho.
    You are right DT and SX are brothers for sure, DT being more proggy and SX always being on more of the metal/Neo-classical side of things. They have toured together a few times but were kinda pitted as Rivals in the early days as opposed to brothers.
    Also the entire theme of Iconoclast song and album is machines rising up and taking over. I think most people who like DT like SX and the other way around with favoritism usually being decided by singers because i think Russll is a much easier to like vocalist as opposed to Labrie but I think Petrucci is easier to like than Romeo though i would argue that Romeo may be technically a better guitarist, Petrucci has a slight edge up on his writting. Though the argument could be made that Romeo writes the majority of SX music and Petrucci has also tag teamed it with either Portnoy, Rudess or the whole band. Regardless both are awesome bands.
    You also need to do a deep dive into SX and listen to their really neo-classical roots with either The Edge of Forever or Of Sins and Shadows. Cheers man!

    • @captainmorgan1978
      @captainmorgan1978  Před 4 lety +2

      Awesome, I liked your take on all that and in the spirit of music, I would like to think people should see them more like brothers than rivals. I am pretty sure Russel did a side project with Portnoy right? Adrenaline Mob, maybe? Liked a few of those songs, but more on the heavy less proggy side...
      I would agree on the Russel vs Labrie take but definitely not on the Pet vs Romeo take as far as the technicality...they are both on the same standard in my opinion...but nonetheless it is all good.
      I will keep the other songs you mentioned in mind for the future reviews...thanks for the comment! Rock on

    You're right, SX concepts are mostly mythology, fantasy and sci-fi (on Iconoclast). There are only a couple songs that could be taken as purely personal/"human" concerns. But the emotion is real and human, whatever story or metaphor the lyrics are using. Russell Allen's singing is one of the main reasons I prefer SX over DT.

    Symphony X is my favourite band. And I love Odyssey. For me it's one of the best pieces of art I've experienced. But every time I see people recommend it right off the gate I'm just cringing. It's definitely not a thing you'd recommend to someone even relatively new.
    I'm a big fan of Greek mythology and even did some literary interpretations of Greek myths in modern settings for personal pleasure. And I really enjoyed the song from the first listen, but it's just too much to take for an unprepared person both musically and, what is more important, conceptually.

      And if you want to dig deeper, Ron Jarzombeck (Watchtower guitarist... virtuoso guitarist to check out for sure) also have a project that I really like and that is a must listen too. It is called *Blotted Science*. He teamed up with Cannibal Corpse bassist and good drummers (one of which is Hannes Grossman from Obscura). It is instrumental heavy prog metal very technical but more on the non-melodic side of things. So, next underground stuff would be nice that you look at Watchtower and Blotted Science (or even a Ron Jarzombek guitar clinic).

    Some songs to consider;
    Symphony x: Nevermore (newest album & probably the easiest to digest)
    Symphony X: Rediscovery pt. II ( Lots of transitions)
    Symphony X: without you (newest album, it's a ballad i think)
    NightWish: Song of myself (harder song from them closer to prog. Maybe)
    NightWish: The wayfarer ( highlights their balance of metal with folk elements and nice vocals. They always have nice vocalists. Also it's an older song)
    Nightwish: The Greatest show on earth ( it's a long song so beware. But it had fun Trasnsitions and its from their second to last album)

    If I was going to pick a long DT song for a new listener I'd choose "A Change of Seasons" over Octavarium hands down if it was going to be long. Though usually their one HIT "Pull Me Under" is the go to song. I don't think Pull Me Under is their best song by any stretch of the mind but it is one of the more accessible. You kind of have to know your audience though. If you know them more then something like Peruvian Skies, or Hollow Years might be a good ice breaker. It can be hit or miss.

    Well they certainly updated their sound with years but in my opinion lost a bit of the flare that made them unique. Iconoclast is good song but sounds like generic prog metal to me. Their best from the "newer" albums is Paradise Lost and its from 2007, I wouldnt go farther than that. I suggest listening to "The Accolade" from 97, a classic and very unique song from them. That kind of songs that are timeless and set them apart from DT and their contemporanies.

    My problem with DT is one: if I don't care for the singer, it's harder to like the band. That's why I never was a big YES fan. It's not that the guys can't sing, but the two singers' "sound" doesn't appeal to me. Russell Allen is a powerhouse yet with many colors to his voice.
    From a technical perspective, they are closer. My criticism of DT after seeing them 6 times is, their technical side is often technical for the sake of technique itself. Symphony X uses their chops more in context with the compositional ideas being presented. I think MJR's skill in arrangement and doing clever things with conterpoint and vocal harmonies definitely outshines DT. Although many DT fans find SX a bit campy. From a guitar perspective both players are outstanding. Personally, I come down on the MJR side as showing techniques more to my liking. JP is an awesome player with a killer tone. I do think that DT chooses more of a perspective on social issues of today. SX is definitely more metal in their lyrical content. The more you listen to them, the greater the musical differences in the bands become. But it requires some study beyond the fact that both bands are packed with virtuoso players.

    • @captainmorgan1978
      @captainmorgan1978  Před měsícem

      Definitely some great points and I can understand the Labrie issue for sure. Can't agree with your second point much at all, even more so in comparison to SX. Lol. They definitely are more technical over all musically than SX but I don't think that means that they are "over playing" or wanking. Preferences are great and I am glad SX speaks to you more than DT... Love music no doubt... And I love Romeo but in just that context he is way less colorful than Petrucci in his solos overall... I would even agree in some aspects he is technically past Petrucci, especially with his taps and sweeps... Chubby finger god! 😊

    • @smitlag
      @smitlag Před měsícem

      @captainmorgan1978 prog metal is by nature over the top in terms of technique. We love it for that reason. I see these critics all the time who love the word "pretentious," which annoys the shit out of me. It's the nature of that beast. You probably have thousands of potentially great bands in the audience alone. There are not too many chicks at these concerts, however, lol. But, it's really, I guess, how well a complex instrumental section blends from one section to another. As you mention, "Octavarium" is a song that, while having some technically outstanding performances, the parts don't fit together all that well. Now, "Scenes from a Memory" or even the first " Metropolis" did an outstanding job in the use of ideas. There is a huge difference in the presence of how the keyboards are presented. JR definitely more showy and in your face flashy than Michael Pinnella. Yet, Michael is ever bit the player Jordan is. But I never realized it until I heard his solo material. They both came from Julliard. I almost liked Kevin Moore's playing better in that it blended better with JP's ideas.
