Hannibal Barca was a formidable general that theatened the Roman Republic during almost his entire career, he fought and won against impossible odds, not only numerical, the Roman army was far more disciplined and with a more homogenic militar sctructure (making it easier to plan a strategy) and the Cartaginian army was heterogenic made of mercenaries and tribes, far more dificult to command. Spartacus was basicaly a slave that rebeld and threatened the Romans by the force of numbers, they where poorly trained, almost with no equipment and the reason the rebelion lasted was just because the Roman Senate did not take it seriously at first. Everything I know about battle...I learned from you.
    --
    What do we fight for?
    I often asked you that.
Some fight for what used to be.
And others for what is to come.
    Or for love
    We fight for honor.
    We fight for glory.
    We fight for our freedom.
    Some fight for their children.
Still others fight for their gods.
The key thing is that we can only win
if we're in complete control of our emotions.
If we have a crystal-clear strategy.
You must maintain order in your ranking while destroying that of the enemy.
Whatever we fight for...we pay the price in blood.
We all die...the guilty...and the innocent.
And when all is lost...you still need the help of the gods.
Your impregnable armor became your largest burden.
But the most important thing...is to recognize your enemy's greatest weakness.
And bring all your strengt down on this point.
    -Take my armor.
    Are you sure, Dominus?
You are a free man. Get out of here.
And your biggest weakness...was your trust in me.
I ask my self...What were you fighting for?
    And was it worth it?
    Pater...
    PATER!!!
    You never understood...
that we might want a different life than you.
To believe differently, feel differently, and think differently than you.

The Marcomanni Wars (known in modern records as the German War - belllum Germanicum - or German Expedition - expeditio Germanica) is the name for a series of related armed conflicts between the Roman Empire on the one hand, and an alliance of mostly Germanic tribes led by the Marcomanni and Quads on the other. which ran from 166 to 180. Their main scene was the upper and middle reaches of the Danube, ie the then northern border of the Empire, which the Romans sought to secure from the increasingly frequent and massive incursions into the depths of Roman territory. The wars ended with the Roman victory and the relative stabilization of the border, but only after a long and exhausting struggle which showed the numerous weaknesses of the Empire, which would become even more pronounced in later periods.

The series is well received by the audiences around the world and I like the fact, that Germany was able to produce such a series and inform Germans and the rest of the world about an important part of the German history.
    That said:
They took many unhistorical "artistic liberties" in this series.
One of the largest mistakes in this series is for me, that they reduced the (in reality) massive end-battle to a relative small appearing incident in the series, that was over in the series after one short day...or even after a few hours.
In Reality the Roman troops were stretched out for over 15 kilometers and were ambushed in a kind of guerilla warfare over a timespan of THREE komplete days!
It is rather disappointing, that the makers of the series felt the need to do that. It would have been relative easy to give the audience the correct historical informations about that battle in an entertaining manner without changing the real historical events in that massive manner.
The use of the fire trenches is pure fiction. Never happened that way, that is for sure.
The resting of the Roman swords on top of the shields is pure fantasy, too. God knows, why the makers of this series felt the need to bring in such little, annoying historical inaccuracies, despite they had the support of a full team of history experts for this series.

  • @chrisanduncensoredjapan6627

Season 2, if it comes, is all about the revenge of Rome.
Things don’t end well for Arminius or Thusnelda.
But they did undeniably keep Germany out of Rome’s orbit. After their vengeance campaigns, Rome didn’t try to annex Germany again.
Rome wanted the region to secure a more defensible frontier on the Elbe river.
Teutoburg forest changed that. The longer Rhine frontier stayed, behind which the non Romanised tribes - as a result of the battle - began to encroach.
Arguably Arminius caused the fall of the Roman Empire, long-term.

    • @leysont
      @leysont Před 3 lety +4

Who knows what would have happened without him? I reckon Rome would have conquered Europe completely and might even have endured for many more centuries without the instability Arminius brought over them. A larger empire would mean more resources and people to defend themselves against the huns, and there would be no migration period because the tribes that caused it wouldn't exist. I am pretty sure Germanic languages wouldn't exist anymore, either. Instead of Europe, we'd have Rome.

As a response to Teuteburg, the new emperor Tiberius sends the commander Germanicus(accompanied by Arminius' younger brother Flavus a toddler Caligula) to deal with Arminius. Germanicus defeats Arminius in battle several times, kidnaps a pregnant Thusnelda, and takes back the eagle standards that they lost.
