Ikr, for me personally it was especially the gymnast rings breakin .. it scares the shit out of me sm .. I am now afraid of my own Gymnastics rings that i got at home lmfao
As a gymnast, I have had the set of uneven bars completely collapse behind me as I dismounted and it was terrifying. I landed, but the entire set of bars was on the ground 💀💀
I sometimes think judges should be former gymnasts so they know more about the difficulties and the proper form and the mistakes to look out for, but then I think “what if they aren’t good people and invent reasons to have a problem with someone they’re jealous of for being able to do something that they couldn’t when they were competing. “
@@christineheminger7762You could argue the same thing for non-gymnast judges though, maybe they got into gymnastics as a potential candidate but never made the cut or something so they're bitter that other people are living their dream
I had equipment brake on me while competing recently! Just a week or so ago I was only the second one to compete uneven bars in my regionals rotation. Everyone goes through warmup and the first gymnast competes no problem. I begin my first giant in my routine and as I'm going around I feel something make a crackling sound. I keep going, stick my dismount and immediately say to my coach "the bar is falling off." She didn't believe me until I showed her the wood splinters on the matting. They offered a redo but I was happy with my performance. Actually, and forgive my lack of humility, I won't ever forget the time I became regional bar champ after I peeled the wood off the bar.
Back in the 80s, my fathers high school friend had a malfunction that caused his grips to lock mid=meet. He reportedly had so much inertia that he shattered both of his arms.
But what if you get hurt by the malfunction and can’t do the routine cleanly because of the pain? Seems a bit unfair, although I don’t know what else they could do about it. And does anyone (besides you) pay a penalty if you suffer a serious injury?
unfortunately i don't believe so. if you hurt yourself that bad in a routine usually a judge will prevent you from competing to avoid serious injury. however, gymnastics competitions and gymnasts in general are pretty positive with each other, so everyone will equally feel terrible for you, and on occasion if your grips snap and you need spares, someone from a completely different gym or group will offer you theirs to compete with, happened to me once.
No you don’t get any money for a malfunction even if you get hurt and if you really can’t compete you can just scratch and you get a 0 or you can just push through the injury
My 6 year old son LOVES your videos, he saw me scrolling through youtube shorts and was amazed by your videos and now binge watches them. Hes got no peripheral vision, no depth perception and can't see contrast and is short sighted but he loves loves LOVES you and your videos and started gymnastics. For Halloween this year he wants me to go dressed as you and wants me to make a replica of your uniform 😂😂😂
(This wasn’t a malfunction but still) I was doing giants a couple of weeks after I learned them and one time I didn’t make it over. Instead of letting go and landing on my feet I held on and flew across the gym into the wall. I was fine, but dude I gave my coach (and me) a heart attack. Edit : Nice 👌🏻
I remember in my old gym, we had a giant hole in the wall behind the bar set for years. Eventually I asked what happened there and the coach said someone had flew into the wall off the bars and they just never bothered to fix it
And even if they do get a chance to redo their routine, I'd imagine they'd still be pretty thrown off. In baseball, we get pretty shaken if anything goes even a little wrong, let alone if the equipment breaks
There's so much stress in a competition, and you're usually pushing out of your comfort zone at the limits of your current capabilities to get the best possible routines and scores. I can't fathom the mental fortitude it takes to immediately go back into a competition level routine on recently replaced and repaired equipment. The trust vs PTSD must be insane.
If the judge permits. Any judge they wouldn’t permit them to do their routine over needs to have their job taken from them. That could literally ruin a gymnasts career. The same should happen to them.
Part of judge's job is safety. Part of this is that they may rule that the replacement equipment isn't good enough to continue with but sometimes it's the athlete. Athletes can get super upset when things aren't going well and trough basically a temper tantrum. Adrenaline is running high in competitions and people can get intense. It's not unheard for them go verbally abusive to people, brake stuff and even fights to brake out. They just aren't mentally in a good place to continue and allowing them to do so sets a bad precedent on acceptable behavior.
When I was still competing, a broken grip meant you took the fall deduction, take your grips off, and finish your routine without them. Judges weren't nice enough to consider them as an 'equipment malfunction' when something happened to them.
I once seen a guy on high bar have his grips touch, causing his hands to stop, and his body kept going cause his arm to break and the bone came out of the skin.
finally some normal rule in sports and not one where its like "if the equipment fails the athlete cant continue anymore, has to try again one year later" type shit
One time I was on bars and I was going to do my routine and the low bar when i went to jump to the high bar like was not right and the guys helping set it up had no clue what he was doing and it just like fell all the way down like to the lowest point it was so scary
Imagine the equipment your using a the meet brakes, and the judge says “Hmm.. No you can't compete again. Even though it's our equipment I just haven't liked the routine so far.” Like bro 💀
I had a practice strap attached high bar break in half under my right strap during a giant. I kipped up but caste out low so I hollowed out as I passed thru the bottom and pushed my center forward with all my weight to regain speed and the bar flexed and snapped mid giant and fell away in opposite directions while my other hand still held on. I landed on my feet with half the bar still attached to my hand. It was during a demonstration to younger kids to try to convince them to join. Needless to say, nobody from that group joined lol
Damn, imagine getti g halfway through a routine, one of your grips break and you land on your head. Bit ots ok, you get to try again. Bro, I'm tired as hell and the world is spinning.
I feel bad for laughing when you helicoptered off the bar 😅 that looked like it hurt bc you spun and then you looked like you legitimately folded in half 😭
Ok…. I’ve been wondering all these years how they can rotate so many times on the pole without blistering their hands… I had no idea they use those grips!
I saw a yt short of women tear her hands to shred in a park trying these skills. A chunk of her hand lifted off and was a bloody mess and she got back on again. Seems she didn't know either!
The dude who had the rings break on him when you said apparatus dismounted so gracefully and quicky I didn't even notice the equipment broke until the slow mo.

@@Appaddict01 nope, i meant the 96 Olympics. There was something wrong with the vault and a bunch of athletes got hurt. Keri Strug got *really* hurt rather famously.
Grips can not only snap, they can stretch enough that they get stuck onto themselves on the high bar. That locks the gymnast's hand on the bar. I've seen it happen twice, and both times it broke the gymnast's wrist.
"if the judge permits" bro wtf, that's not even their fault and they might not be allowed to show what they are capable of doing? nah
Well, the gymnast should inspect and replace his own equipment before the competition
By his own equipment I meant the grips. If the apparatus breaks, they always allow to repeat the routine
The more I hear about these "judges", the more I'm not a fan...
Wasn't this a huge issue with the vault in Sydney 2000?
The judges have to determine whether it was actually a malfunction or not (as stated earlier). The judges after that probably always let them redo it
