  • I broke the tip section on my Euro rod and decided to set up my 9' 5wt with a micro leader Euronymphing setup. I spent a few hours trying it out on a stunning section of the River Usk on a warm, sunny afternoon.
    Results:
    Does it work? Yes.
Is it ideal? No, far from it - casting is really tough and it makes it much more difficult to fish at any distance with a good drift. I did find it more productive than traditional nymphing techniques with a floating line.

Some good signs of a healthy river …nice to have the Usk as your local 🎣tight lines

It sure is. I've caught far more smaller trout this season than last - it's nice to see the little ones mixed in!
      Tight lines to you too

Hey there, i fish this beat occasionally when I have a bit of spare time (based in Bristol)
I was down yesterday and had 1 euronymphing with a PTN, and another on a grey wulff. I find they can be pretty fussy with presentation and fly selection.
Can I ask what nymphs and sizes you were using today?
You pulled a lot out of that one spot!

It's such a nice beat, but like you said it can be tougher when it's clear water and bright sun.
I was using mostly a size 16 olive flash perdigon. That and something without any flash like a simple ptn or Walts worm are usually my go-to flies to see what they're in the mood for. I'm almost always between 14 and 18 for sizes on nymphs. Under these conditions I was really trying to stay below the fish and cast directly upstream.
Thanks for watching and tight lines!
