    You can land big drops by holding the ollie button in every game with the mechanic including THPSHD. Still annoying but not game-ruining once you get used to it.

      I actually only learned about this a couple of years ago after almost 15 years of playing these games.
      So I could understand why some people don't know how to recover out of big drops.

    • @kracked7637
      @kracked7637 Před 5 lety +19

      was about to say this too, seemed like the rewiever didn't know this and thought it's a forced bail every time? I actually liked that mechanic and wouldn't even have minded if they kept it in the later games, maybe with its own landing animation to give big gaps a more realistic feel of the impact. also thps2x looks pretty dope, never got to play that one. and the ps1 version of thps3 and 4 just look like bizarro world, I like it though

      I never had problems with big drops 'cause me and my friends always play holding the X (jump/ollie) and letting it go to do a trick and then returning pressing the X so I never quite understood why/how some people bailed big drops LOL

      I would play it if did have the level of polish the first 4 pro skater games has. You can abuse the geometry of the old levels and create a skater that is like 6 meters tall, it's a super-fan looking mod, no professionalism at all, they should limit these kinds of things. And change the damn custom player models to not look like the dwarves from Underground 1 and 2.

    • @SeekerGoldstone
      @SeekerGoldstone Před 3 lety

      @@damsen978 It's a mod for THUG2 and the levels are direct ports of the geometry but they've been making patches and bug-fixes this whole time so they are arguably the most stable versions of the old levels available, with the greatest amount of quality-of-life updates. If you don't want the classic exploits, you can turn them off in the settings.
      If you don't want a giant or tiny CAS, just make a normal sized one. I don't think your character model size is related to the size of your hitbox anyway... so a giant CAS hits a QP exactly the same as a dwarf.

    • @damsen978
      @damsen978 Před 3 lety

      @@SeekerGoldstone Yeah that's what i do, i make a regular sized pro looking skater with pads and all but then i see a nude red skinned dwarf or a giant CAS and it's super-immersion breaking, that's my point, it needs polish, not tech-wise, but immersion-wise.
      One thing they could do is to change the 3D models of the pro characters to the ones seen in Pro Skater 3 or 4 where they look pro af with the right body proportions and all. Then limit the size and exaggerated proportions you can give to your CAS character and that would be it. Maybe also give an option to change the gravity to make it play more like Pro Skater 1 and 2 where everything feels heavier and more rewarding.

    BIG DROP MODE: I never knew that big drops could be landed. However that doesn't excuse the fact that it's an intrusive gimmick that otherwise shouldn't be there.

      @Rickles Před 4 lety +3

      I find that the people who complain about big drops are just bad at it. Having cut my teeth on hundreds of hours of THPS2 it's second nature after a while. I understand the frustration after coming from games that don't have the mechanic but it's not so bad once you learn it. It's actually satisfying like in Gears of War when you get that perfect reload. It's almost always possible and feels good to do. Missing it creates tension.

    Ok i feel I should just mention this because I’ve seen you fall on the big drop time all the time. when “big drop” comes on, you continuously hit the Ollie button in a row And the “big drop” will get you an extra 4000 points and you won’t fall.
    And on a side note... only 6/10 on ps1 version of pro skater 3?! It’s a masterpiece to me! If back in the day you didn’t have money for a ps2 but had a ps1 still, it would be just as enjoyable as the ps2 version. You gotta keep in mind for the next gen version they switched the engine. So there was certain things that the next gen version could do that the ps1 engine couldn’t. Which is why there’s no stopping the police chase or anything

    • @SquareEyedJak
      @SquareEyedJak  Před 5 lety +13

      Responded to this in the comments of THPSHD, since it's never mentioned in game and I never owned the manual for THPS2, I never knew that they could be landed. Despite that, the mechanic is still incredibly intrusive and doesn't need to be there.

    They really need to start producing more Tony Hawk games. How else are we gonna celebrate October in two years?!

    I don't get the big drop hate. You can do a 3 minute 5 million point combo and can't press X when you land?

    So Jak, I've seen all your Tony Hawk reviews so far and have really enjoyed them. You've done a great job. Now, I must confess, I haven't played a Tony Hawk game, but thanks to you and The Completionist, it makes me want to try the series out. I'm just a little let down by the fact they're not on PSN or Steam or at any retro game shop I've come across. Hopefully, I can find them all (up to Proving Ground) online. To be honest, I wanted to try the series out even before HawkTober, but you convinced me to get into the franchise. Keep making awesome videos Jak, to get more people into more great franchises, and warn people about the bad ones. I'll always be watching, by the way.

      @SquareEyedJak  Před 5 lety +2

      Cheers mate! Glad to see you're keen to give them a go, don't pay too much for them online though. They're all either best sellers (so many copies that they're not worth anything) or so garbage nobody wants them. Depends on the system of course but, don't bankrupt yourself. It is a good series to get into because majority are incredibly cheap compared to a lot of other big name series.

      Yeah, what I'm mostly afraid of are those scratchy discs (especially for the first two games on PS1). I had that issue when I first bought Crash 1 and 2 for said system, and they were so glitchy I had to get the PSN versions on PS3. I didn't even try to get physical copies for Crash 3 or CTR before jumping to PSN. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with Tony than I did with Crash.

      @@SheriffDuncanFlynn games with light scratches thar numerous will work (on PS2) but it's the games with the deep scratches you have to watch out

    having re-played these all thoroughly, let me say
    *THPS3 PS1's* levels are BETTER than THPS3 PS2. fight me in the streets. It feels like in compacting the levels they kept the best parts of each level, trimmed off the fat by removing empty/confusing/awkward areas (i'm looking at you Canada wilderness), they added tons nice little touches and GREATLY improved the overall combo flow I think. I think honestly the same goes for THPS4 PS1 to a lesser extent.
    .
    *THPS2X's* handling of THPS1 is an absolute joke. Not only is it pathetically easy with the enhanced moves but no rebalancing of points as you mentioned, not only is it easier to begin with than THPS2, and you play it after THPS2 and X so your skills have sharpened through that, but they DON'T make you get the stats over again, so not only does that take away an objective in what's already the shorter, easier game, but you can start it with max stats. Jesus christ you can blow through it in 5 minutes.
    .
    *THPS4 PS1* I feel like I agree on the quality of it, but I like/dislike it for somewhat different reasons. I think the goals are fun, but my main problem is the levels feel totally dead and lonely without NPC characters, when that was one of the biggest reasons I like THPS 4. It feels like you're the last survivor of an apocalypse and are hallucinating these challenges, even compared to THPS2 they always had glimpses of life in the levels through sound effects, the bull running around, the bum, or cars driving by. THPS4 PS1 has literally nothing in that regard.
    also it still has a landing stat despite big drops being removed, so you can waste stat points presumably.

      @Sphat90 Před 3 lety +1

      I definitely prefer Kona in THPS4 PS1 to the PS2 version, it not only has a nicer sky, but as you say regarding the THPS3 levels, it just flows better as a result of being compacted.
