  • It is not often that a newly airing anime manages to hold my attention these days, but Sousou no Frieren is truly something special. In an endless sea of derivative garbage, Frieren manages to stand out from amongst its peers with an iron fist. If you haven't watched this show yet, then please: do so at your earliest convenience. If you have watched it, then hopefully this video will help you understand what exactly it is about this show that makes it so special.

    Enjoyed the video, I just started watching anime regularly this past September, but even I could tell something was special about Frieren compared to most of the anime I’ve been watching. The reason I'd put Frieren at number one isn't because I'm searching for perfection but because I've seen countless people talk at length about how Frieren forced people to realise they've taken the people in their lives for granted and start changing that (Gigguk's Frieren video is a great example).
    To me, if a story holds that much emotional impact that people actively change their world view or how they behave around others, that holds greater weight than "oh hey this inspired a lotta copycats."
    Frieren isn't even my favorite anime either. But the impact it has on people is greater than the influence it will have on the industry.

      Lol well, yeah, it's pretty damn good - but keep in mind, Frieren is being put above other masterpieces like Code Geass, Evangelion, and Cowboy Bebop. I didn't want this video to devolve into constant comparisons with other shows - shows which, mind you, are in completely genres and from entirely different time periods - but I think it's quite presumptuous to put an anime that hasn't even ended yet at the number one spot on Myanimelist. For all we know, the second season could come around and be complete garbage. I'm optimistic, but I won't pretend like there isn't a chance that this won't just be another Attack on Titan and end up disappointing me for years to come.

      I don't really like to compare anime in general, each is unique and touches me in certain ways that others don't. It's hard making a ranking list, especially when another great anime (like Frieren) comes along and drastically changes things, especially with how stale things have been lately.
      Excellent video, I really appreciate the time you took to explain what makes Frieren special, and I think you hit the nail on the head with how it captures what Tolkien did with Lord of the Rings, which is my favorite movie.

      @@octorokreviewsyou're welcome! Despite not being worth staying in the number one spot on MAL, especially being unfinished (both the manga and anime) it is nonetheless my second favorite anime that I have watched. The characters are written incredibly well, and the authors take on time is refreshing. Coming from a perspective that is actually interesting and develops the elven race beyond "look at this cute elf girl, thanks, that's it."
      The only anime still at my number one spot, which hasn't been taken down, is Violet Evergarden. And if you haven't seen that, have buckets ready for your tears, and plenty of tissues. Marathoning it late into the night/morning was not my best idea lol

      @@octorokreviewsI can confidently say that cowboy bebop and evangelion are NOT masterpieces. Classics yes. Masterpieces no. There’s certainly an argument to be made about code geass (my 2nd favorite anime ever prior to Frieren), but it’s also very flawed and many times lacking in quality. Something that can’t be said about Frieren.
      Frieren definitely deserves the #1 spot. After all, the reason why it’s #1 is because the majority of people who watched it, rated it a 9 or 10 out of 10. I’m not really sure how an anime can prove to be more worthy of the #1 title tbh. Also definitely not presumptuous given that MAL separates seasons and rates them separately . Season 1 of Frieren is a masterpiece of quite literally the highest quality and the entire show doesn’t need to be finished for it to be rated higher than everything else. It’s THAT good. I highly recommend re-watching the series btw. Especially if you think the plot is practically non-existent.

    Great video! I hadn't watched any anime in a couple of years, and when a video like this one made me discover the show back in December, I bingewatched it and entered the Frieren Fridays bandwagon. It made me feel so many emotions, that was great.
    The animation is exceptional. I've been watching the reactions of an animation expert (?) named 3BSkyen and it has been super funny to see him go mall trying to find any trace of 3D use and cut corners, but he did find some (the armor shots aren't the only ones, you can also find 3D horse models for ex). He has just released episode 9 and it took him a moment to process Stark putting his jacket on because he was still gushing over the priest bandaging the Graf's arm in 2D. This show is amazing.

    I have read all the English volumes of Frieren at least once and am on my third read of the ones featured in the Anime in anticipation of watching the Anime when I have time. I cannot recommend the Manga more highly as in 40 years of reading both western and Japanese comics this ranks very near the top of my all time best list. It is a deeply emotional tale of the nature of time through someone who's scale of it is different then Humans. The art is gorgeous with little humorous nuggets tucked into the background of the panels. I adore Fern. She is a big bundle of Sass.

    • @octorokreviews
      @octorokreviews  Před 2 měsíci +7

      I think you'll find the anime to your liking. I read some of the Manga while researching for this video and I have to say: the anime improves the pacing and enhances little details left unpolished in the original publication. For example: the first chapter shows Himmel and Eisen about to be executed by guillotine, but the guillotine is a late early-modern period invention - not a medieval one - so the anime changed it to have there be a state executioner wielding a sword instead. - which is much more period accurate It's nothing drastic, mind you, but these are little details that make the world feel more fleshed out, and I love that Madhouse took the time to make little improvements like that.

      @@octorokreviews A friend of mine said the same thing. He said that they changed the opening significantly. The Manga slowly across multiple volumes gives you the backstory and introduces Frieren's first companions in short vignettes. They told me that the Anime pushes this aspect more to the front and the first two episodes in particular focuses on this.
      Fullmetal Alchemist is one of my favorite comics / mangas for much the same reason Frieren is. It and Frieren are very character driven and both are pretty different than the manga that gets typically popular in the West. I also love the fact that the female characters are so well done in both series and just not eye candy. Both Winry and Fern are some of my favorite female characters in comics because they remind me so much of my sisters.

      @michaelreddy4697 I was also impressed by the quality of writing in regards to Frieren’s female characters. They feel real; emotional in ways that are understandable, but still witty and capable in their own right. Not a lot of manga writers (especially male ones) seem to be able to give their female characters a proper spotlight without falling into generic tropes and cookie-cutter personality types, so all props to Kanehito Yamada for pulling it off with so much consistency.

      not to mention it has everything going for it too.

      impeccable bakground arts?

    I think the only anime that really encapsulates the "romance" of fantasy in a similar way as Frieren is One Piece, which is funny since it started before HBO's Game of Thrones. But no, that same concept of romance, of finding beauty, wonder, and meaning in the world and one's actions, is very much part of the DNA of that story. And while it may look goofy and cartoony (and it is those things), it is also a grand adventure that is ultimately filled with hope and wonder. So if you feel like you need that fantasy filled with romance itch scratched, I'd suggest One Piece.

    • @octorokreviews
      @octorokreviews  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That’s definitely a generous interpretation, and I do not fault you for it. But there are several scenes throughout those episodes where they do draw the suits of armor (during action scenes mostly, but also in a few background shots), which would be counterintuitive if the intent was to unnerve the viewer. To be frank: there really is no artistic reason to use CGI in the foreground of most 2D animated films or shows, and considering Madhouse’s track record with CGI, I know as a fact that this was a financial decision - not an artistic one. And even if it was, the fact still remains that the end product looks all the worse for it; intent doesn’t matter as much as results do, unfortunately.

      @@octorokreviews to be frank though the anime industry is plagued with limited budget to produce the anime while expecting exceptional results. short production schedules as well contribute to cutting corners to meet the deadlines. 3d CGI is the perfect corner cutter allowing them to do things quicker and cheaper at the cost of quality. i doubt many of them exactly like the fact they have to do that but budgets and deadlines aren't like they used to be back in the day. do you think full metal alchemist brotherhood could have been as good as it is if it only had 12 or 28 episodes instead of a full 64? think they could have pulled it off with half the budget and less time? i don't think so. anime studios have been going on a rampage increasing the amount of anime being produced without increasing the budgets of said anime. so its not really surprising that CGI is more prevalent to compensate in the best scenarios or is used as an excuse to be lazy cashgrab at worst. in the case of frieren i would argue its the former

      Not a problem! My personal favorite show to this day is Code Geass. If you're into political dramas, I'd say that one is a must. If you like romance, Clannad is a fantastic series that explores the very real ins and outs of adult relationships - including the crushing responsibility and constant stress, coupled with a need to make the other person happy. Koe no Katachi or Liz and the Blue Bird are also favorites of mine and explore two very different types of romance stories. A fair warning, though: all four of these recommendations are bittersweet tales, so don't expect a super happy ending from any of them. If you want something more upbeat, then I'd suggest Little Witch Academia (the short film, that is). It's super sweet and isn't a big-time investment.
      If you've watched a bunch of bland Isekai you haven't liked before, then I'd suggest Konosuba, which is a fantastic parody of the genre and a genuinely well-written sitcom in its own right. One Punch Man is a great parody of shonen, if you've seen a bunch of that. And Lastly: Kill la Kill is an amazing deconstruction of the entire medium of anime in general, and is perfect for anyone who's seen so much anime that they're pretty much numb to the entire industry by this point (i.e., me).
      I hope this list helps you; and thank you very much for watching the video!

    Great review overall. But. There was Crest of the Stars mentioned as an anime where "elves are just a set dressing" and I could not disagree more for a set of reasons. 1. The Abh are not elves. Abriel family has pointy ears as a genetic marker, and that was an in-joke by the creators of the race cause the Abh looked kinda elfy. 2. However, the Abh are explored and displayed narratively as extremely alien to other human nations with their mandatory gene manipulation, declared idealistic yet aggressive political stance, lack of family as an institution, programmed social obedience etc. Not to mention that CotS and BotS are among the few stories where the fundamental difference between regular people and longer living species is actually explored.

    • @octorokreviews
      @octorokreviews  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Wow, I'm surprised to find another person who's actually seen Crest of the Stars! You are right that the Abh are, indeed, an alien race, and therefore should have some alien traits to denote that fact. But it is my opinion (and in all fairness - this is just an opinion, since I can't confirm nor deny it) that the real purpose behind the elf ears was to essentially make "elves in space" a selling point of the author's fantasy world. Again: cute girls with elf ears being used to market an insecure writer's fantasy (or in this case, sci-fi) world. But in all fairness: that is mere speculation on my part. I simply don't see how the elven ears in any way add to the subtext or plot, so my assumption is that it was a marketing thing, but hey - maybe they are there for some genuine reason.
      Also: I never continued on to Banner of the Stars, so maybe the subtext about long life-spans and the such does emerge later on. All I know is that I was so bored by that first season that I couldn't be bothered to continue lol.

      A shame. Seikai has a lot in common with both Frieren and Spice and Wolf in tone, especially when considering the main duo.
      But it is not fantasy. Seikai is quite close to hard sci-fi by the space opera standards. Original novels are especially busy with war logistics, reactions of different societies to war, annexation, role of resource and staff management, and so on.
      Also, important note people constantly miss: Abh are humans, not aliens. And the elf ears of Abriels, blue hair of Abh overall and stuff are the result of their creators marking them as slave subspecies programmed to serve.

      Well, the main reason it dropped back down is that the anime adaptation butchered the entire series.
      The anime came up with its own original ending, which is why it seemed to come out of f***ing nowhere, entirely ruining the whole point of a mystery story.
      The manga continued for another 2-3 seasons' worth of content, and ended on an actually really good note. I would give it around an 8.5/10.

      No, I don't think FMA was ever deserving of the number 1 spot. Top twenty, maybe, but not number 1. I'd say something like Code Geass, Eva, or Cowboy Bebop would make more sense being at the number one spot - all of these shows have near perfect writing and are artistic masterpieces in their own right. And of course, there are other shows and films that could push the number one spot and deserve it, too - but Frieren doesn't have an ending yet, so it's more than a bit presumptuous to give it the number one ranking now. Also, it isn't perfect: some of the middle episodes drag on a bit and could have been cut, for example.

But you are at least technically correct - the best kind of correct.

    Great video! I especially loved your talk about the stealing of fantasy tropes from Tolkien without their context. So many anime fall victim to poorly thought out worldbuilding, and while that’s fine in a lighthearted comedy it always takes me out of dramas. I was so happy that Frieren’s world felt so real and lived in even though they barely had any exposition dumps at all.
    Also, what’s your beef with 86? Yeah I was annoyed with some of the anime tropes too but I think the core story and character writing, especially in the first half, was exceptional and a deeper exploration of the effects of racism on society than any anime I’d seen in quite a while. It certainly did a better job than “literally everyone is a super racist” aot. Lena getting berated for her unconscious racism even though she was genuinely trying to do good was a fantastic scene imo. It’s not a perfect show but I’d definitely say it’s good, a solid 8-8.5/10.

    • @octorokreviews
      @octorokreviews  Před 2 měsíci +5

      I won’t pretend like 86 is the worst thing I’ve ever seen or something like that - far from it. I mean, it’s kinda bad - the world building is poor, the characters’ actions are sometimes nonsensical, and the animation is… horrific (at least during battle scenes) - but it’s far from the worst political drama I’ve seen. No, what pisses me off about 86 is, mostly, the fanbase; so many of them will defend this show as if it is the second coming of Code Geass. I made a video simply pointing out how bad the sound design was (because it really is that terrible; a nitpick, to be sure, but one I found humorous at the time), and in response, I got bombarded with dozens of comments and private messages harassing me over criticizing the show lol. It was truly unhinged, and it gave me a permanent disdain for the show’s fandom; I ended up deleting the video just to get out of it (which I was fine with, cause it was demonetized by Sony anyway).
      So in short: my disdain for 86 is kind of personal, if I’m being honest. Though it does still shock me that - to this day - it still remains in the top 50 ranked anime on Myanimelist. There are so many better stories (and better produced shows, let’s be real) in this medium, and so it’s kind of just sad to see something so mediocre command such a ravenous fan base. That’s the short of it, anyway.
      Thanks for watching the video! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it (even if I was a bit mean to 86 haha).

    As someone who has been a pretty hardcore anime fan for about 15 years, Spy x Family, Kaguya-sama, Oshi no Ko, and probably even 86 (haven't watched it, yet) 100% deserve their high ratings.
    I wonder what you think "deserves" a high rating lmao.
    If you don't think Kaguya-sama is a a masterpiece, any series you recommend to me would probably bring my opinion about that series down (I'm obviously exaggerating, but still.)
    Also, Oshi no Ko's situation, in particular, makes way more sense when you consider that the reason it was rated so highly at first is that most people were rating it based on that movie-level first episode prologue to the series, and then lowered their rating when the _actual_ series started setting up. I feel like the rating will rise back up when season 2 comes out, because that section of the manga is definitely higher quality than the section in season 1 (besides that prologue that the first episode covered)

    I have some major problems with the show that i want to criticize. If you worship this show, i'm going to offend you. And i can't do it without spoiling the show, so you've been warned.
    Himmel is a gimmick personified, the demons nature of pride turning them into mindless cannon fodder is gimmicky af, and flashbacks purposefully withholding information to reveal it with the same but slightly changed flashbacks in a later point in time, is gimmick in the purest sense.
    When i look at Himmel, i really don't like him that much. He's sold to us as this upstanding, flawless, white knight who only pretends to act prideful, because he want's to be remembered by others, out of love for Frieren and that's why he's cool with statues in his image. I mean the man literally has no flaws as long as everything connects back to Frieren.
    He's also completely unfazed by his naive doo-goodery attitude, which has lead to others paying for it. Spitting a mother in her face by letting the demon walk who murdered her child, and afterwards still getting his time to shine by rescuing a girl after her father got murdered. It's all good though, since he isn't written to bear the consequences of his actions.
    Heiter is straight up an alcoholic without ever going into details, conveniently finds a stereotypical war orphan that is set up for him to rescue with the classical savior speech, and then goes on about regretting dying of imminent old age. Cheesy writing. Why does he drink? Who cares, he's a priest who drinks. Why is a little child attempting suicide? Who cares, she's there for Heiter to save. Why is Heiter in a state of regret before dying? Who cares, Frieren got a new companion.
    Eisen turns fear into courage, defying logic itself. Yeah, we never had that type of writing in any battle shounen ever. The most idiotic part is him not going after Stark to clear up a misunderstanding and instead waiting for Frieren who show's up 3 years later, so she can go after Stark with Eisen's message. Why? Because the story needed a plot-twist. And why was he even a dwarf? He's a warrior but so is everyone else who's not a mage in the show. No blacksmithing, no living under the earth or inside a mountain or anything that has to do with dwarven culture.
    So far, all we know is that he's a dwarf, because they also have a longer lifespan in this show, which means he's able to stick around to train Stark in combat. A whole race, serving as plot device.
    Fren becomes Frieren's apprentice and it later turns out she's another genius who can see the mana of other mages fluctuating. Cool. What's her developement? She just kept running away from a monster until she turned around to fight it. Cool. What else? She's the love interest of Stark, who she's using as a punching bag and sexual harasses which is funny to teenagers. She also gets patted on the head for days by Frieren, as if she's her puppy. Amazing.
    Stark's imposter syndrome makes him scared of failing in combat, even though he shouldn't be. And so the only way to make him fight, is Frieren tricking him into thinking they will assist him. But, because he already is an S-Class Warrior for whatever reason, he's simply able to oneshot everyone. And, so his whole character developement amounts to him overcoming his condition, either by being tricked or being so bulky to the point he himself realizes he's not taking any damage. But his motivation to protect others, never changes, so there's not really any further developement happening anyway. His plot is really only all about, why he has this condition, but when we see the flashback of him being a little kid, running away from a demon attack that slaughtered his family, we didn't really think much off it cause it made sense. When we later see the same flashback again, where it was actually his brother who told him to run, i understood it as an absolute pointless scene. As if anyone needed that scene to change their mind about him being a coward, when he was little. Why wouldn't they give us the whole picture in the first place? Asking cause it didn't reveal anything to me. There's really nothing to work with in this story. He should learn to not be scared, even if he fails, but because that never happens, there really isn't any point to his story. He's just there to be a male companion in the trio.
    Lastly Frieren herself. She's just a one punch man clone. Doesn't give a fuck and oneshots left and right. Therefore, there are no stakes and the only interesting parts about her are supposed to be outside of combat. So what's there? She doesn't care about time cause she's an elf, but because she's surrounded by humans, she starts to care about time a little bit i guess. And so, she starts to pick up flowers for a dead friend, goes to restaurants to eat sweets with Fren, get's up early in the morning to watch the sunrise with Fren, keeps getting flashbacks about her old companions and idk, walks around until something happens. There's nothing. It amounts to Glorifying Himmel in her head for the most part. It's also totally inconsistent. She has this edgy, mind controlling seppuku scene with Aura, then couple episodes later, she can't try to force the bird monster who picked up their carriage, into gently landing them back on the ground.
    Nope, let's waste more time repairing the carriage and look for a lost ring, that makes her remember another Himmel moment, in a flashback.
    So when we finally got to the academy portion of the show, they dropped off Stark who has no room for developement left, made Fren and Frieren seperate for 1/3 of the exam and had to introduce probably more characters, than in all of the previous episodes combined. It wasn't the best exam arc in anime, but at least the goal was coherent. Depending what season 2 looks like, it could finally go somewhere, but if the story regresses back to mundane tasks, flashbacks and so called "cozy time", im done with this show. 7/10, overrated on every site. The story has potential to improve but that heavily depends on the next season, if there's gonna be one.
