I didn't even want to go to my own wedding! My husband and I got married at the courthouse. A friend insisted on being our witness. I was going to grab a homeless person off the street. It all worked out and was quick and simple. No family or guests, just my friend. I've also made it my policy that I don't go to weddings. I think big weddings are grotesque. They are a joke. Ridiculous! I had a co-worker who told me once that if she could she would have a big wedding every year. She loved the extravaganza and being the princess. I thought a lot less of her after that conversation. I'd like to see people work harder at staying married than having weddings. And those that get married multiple times are gluttons for punishment.

It breaks my heart to hear how some couples will shell out so much money for one day, and barely have enough for a honeymoon. It's one day (for most), why not have something elegant yet budget, and splurge on a honeymoon? Btw, how did you explain not inviting family guests to your wedding?

@@FeelinErie I was estranged from my father for many years and my husband's parents were elderly and we told them we didn't want to make a big deal about it and go through the expense of a wedding. This tradition of loads of bridesmaids who pay for their hideous dresses picked by the bride is a horrible American tradition. Outside of the US the bridesmaids agree on dresses with the bride who pays for them. There is no financial burden on the bridesmaids, even their hair and makeup are paid by the bride. This is why there is normally only one or two bridesmaids.

In my country, the bride and groom pay for everything. Also, bridesmaids here are often children. I was a bridesmaid at age 2,5. My grandma made my dress, my aunt and uncle who were getting married, paid for the fabric.
I’ve never heard of anyone in the wedding party having to pay anything here.
Typically the witnesses to the marriage ceremony make up the wedding party, with one or two kids as bridesmaids.

Yes, those big extravagant weddings and receptions are promoted by a consumer oriented industry and many women are suckers for that. Honestly, I think it’s outrageous. Of course when I got married to my husband of 40+years we had a nice small ceremony in our backyard. a few friends.. may be a total of six. It was quite nice outdoors with my dogs as bridesmaids.!
And yes, when I was just out of high school, I turn down an acquaintance who asked me to be one of 5 bridesmaids back in 1968..
she wanted to have shades of lavender. I told her no I wasn’t interested in being a shade of lavender and I wasn’t that close to her either. .
But that took a lot of guts on my part and I’m proud to say I stand by it to this day 50+ years later!!👍💕🌸
And Sunny is, typical of that type of women, who like a lot of fuss over themselves !!

I stopped going to weddings years ago. Between the air fare, the hotel room, the gift, the rental car and other miscellaneous expenses, it wasn’t worth it especially since some of my friends got married two or three times. And when they invite me again, I simply tell them to elope and save everyone the trouble and expense! I never did understand the concept of marriage. You don’t need it to have children, buy a house, open a bank account, make a will or purchase a car. And who wants to be with the same person forever, especially since most marriages fail? The examples of The Carter’s and The Bush’s are rare...and I still can’t figure out why Melania stays with you know who!

TO Alyssa comment about dress prices - a 5k retail dress - WHOLESALE is around 2k. This means (lets be nice - 3x markup) total cost to make the dress - labor, materials would only be around $650. Even the cheapest non-poly dress materials is $200, the seamstress would have to be paid ONLY $10/hr or less considering the time taken to alter & fit the pattern, cut sew and embellish & finish a dress. For those who feel that making a dress is easy - great, then please make your own and don't ask professionals why they can't do it for $100. - Typical of someone like Alyssa - tbh why is SHE getting paid so much? she's literally being paid to gossip...?

Party before the wedding, party whole day during the wedding. The next day we go back and have party again. Its nonsense cause half of the marriages fail anyways. The new generations are stepping away from the traditional wedding which here is considereg like meet and greet the relatives you never met and so that the parents can show how proud they are. It's suppose to be an honor, but frankly it's an expense most ppl don't want!

My friends know not to even ask me anymore. Because me saying no means I know they aren’t gonna last. I’m not spending time money and presents if it’s not gonna be worth it. Also, some weddings are a spectacle. No one wants to be in a 45 proceeding standing up listening to a priest. Y’all do that in private. See you at the reception.

I do know that a lot of services when it comes to weddings charge more because there’s a higher quality and weddings are more demanding as far as what is expected. For instance the catering service for a wedding the expectation is different then a business event that’s needs catering that’s why it’s more expensive
