  • How to configure the Icom IC-705 radio and the FT8CN app for Android phone , in order to run the wireless link between the two and successfully operate FT8 mode with no need for the USB cable? The answer is in this video. Before you start, please make sure your radio is set up for Digital FT8 mode. Tutorial in this video only deals with the wireless setup aspects.

    Thanks for the video, it really explained how the Icom networking was setup and the difference between the two type of network settings. I noticed that when you setup the FT9CN, network settings, you used the Icom address assigned by your home network (.118), I also tried my network dhcp assigned address, and it took me a couple minutes to figure out why it would not connect. Then on a lark, I used the .59.1 address of the icom network, and viola, it worked. It was also somewhat of a surprise that I did not find the app on Playstore, but had to sideload it, that was a whole new can of worms... Your video motivated me to try this, and its great... Thanks again...

      Thanks for watching! As it comes to the iFTx , I'm afraid, this software does not allow to pair your iPhone with an IC-705 via bluetooth like a headset, nor to arrange a stream via the wi-fi, like in the FT8CN. But: the iFTx allows you to physically put the phone near the radio speaker/mike and have a sound/microphone link in this most simplistic way! I've tried it on many radios, it works, it's fun! :) 73! • @Linas_LY2H
      @Linas_LY2H  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching Sergio! Yes, it could be a problem to sync the time if you are in a total off-line situation, no wi-fi and no GSM data service. GPS certainly could be used to get the precise time , but I’m not sure which app could correct the time on the phone automatically. I like the GPS Tools app which gives multiple GPS-based services and the precise time among them, but it doesn’t seem like being able to correct the clock in the phone. But it displays, on a single screen, the UTC from the GPS and the local phone’s time. It’s easy to see the difference and make manual adjustment to the clock if the difference is big. If its a second or two, I think, it is possible to set the error offset manually within the FT8CN app’s settings under the “Sync” box. It’s not the ideal solution, but it may work. It wold be a great idea to use the built-in IC-705’s GPS service but I have yet to find the right app which could do that on the phone , in a similar way the BktTimeSync app does it on a PC. Anyway, there is good food for thought here ! 73! Linas LY2H

      Hi Martin, thanks for watching! Well, if you're sure your Android is connected wirelessly ( via Wi-Fi or via the Icom Hotspot) to the radio and you see the waterfall and stations decoded, then the first thing to check is the sound output level from the FT8CN. It's under a speaker icon on the right side of the FT8CN screen. The level should be such that it looks good on the IC-705 meter :) and there is no High ALC warning in the FT8CN app. Also, make sure all the sound settings within the tablet itself are enabled, etc. Else, restarting the app and the radio could be helpfull. I tried to recreate both types of Wi-Fi link anew on my IC-705 and my Huawei Android, following my own tutorial in the video :), and it worked, for me, each time. Hi Steve! Yes , it is, if only fellow pedestrians were not already annoyed by you poking around with your telescoping antenna whip on your back-pack :) I usually, just turn my phone’s volume button down or up to the desired monitoring sound level. It does not affect the audio signal coming from the phone to the radio. @@steverish6623 In FT8CN, there is no separate settings for the soundcards. If you made all the settings correct in the app and on the radio and , after logging in to the radio from the FT8CN app, you here sound from your tablet speakers and sea the waterfall with stations decoded , it should automatically work on transmit too. Unless, you have the signal’s level from the FT8CN app to the radio turned down completely. You can check this by taping on the speaker icon on the right side of the screen and adjust the sound output slider to the best ALC on the radio. If all this set right and still no sound to the radio, may be it takes just to restart the tablet and the radio, it often helps. 73! Linas LY2H

      Hello, thanks for watching! I've never tried working FT8 on a FM handheld radio, so I have no experience in this type of digital. Actually, I haven't heard many people would do that. Even if it should be possible technically, I see no point in doing that as transmitting the FT8 signal "piggy-backed" on a FM carrier would mean that only one station at a time can transmit on this FM frequency (channel). Normally, the FT8 signal is transmittet via the SSB transceiver ( including pn the VHF/UHF bands) which allows a great number of transmitting stations to fit in the 3kHz width of the same audio channel. But for some experimenting purposes, surely you can connect your handheld to the computer or a smartphone and feed the radio with an FT8 audio signal. The easiest, "wild" way is to use vox on the radio and play the FT8 signal from the FT8CN app through the smartphone's speaker. This would trigger the vox and the radio would transmit the FM signal with a sound of FT8. On receive ( if there is anybody else around answering your fm-ft8 call :)), you just keep the smartphone close to the speaker of the radio which plays someone's else ft8 transmission in FM and the smartphone's microphone catches the signal and the FT8CN app will certainly decode it :). In a more "civilised" way, you probably would want to employ an external soundcard modem like Digirig connected to the radio's Audio out/in and PTT lines and to the USB port on the computer or a smartphone ( via the OTG cable). Thanks again for an interesting question, 73! Linas LY2H

      @Linas_LY2H  Před rokem +1

      Hello Andrew,
      I try to explain this in the video, at ~14.25 min :) . It all comes to tapping on the Sync button in the FT8CN app. Your phone needs to be connected to the internet at that time. Actually, if your phone has a SIM card and is connected to the service provider network, and the settings in the phone are correct, the time probably would be set automatically via the NTP or similar. I noticed that sometimes it's not enough for the FT8, so extra syncing via the FT8CN, or, actually any other syncing app, is always good. So far, I have not figured it out yet if it would be possible to use the in-built IC-705 GPS service as it comes to the the Android. I think, it is not possible, only for the wired PC. May be, the FT8CN developers will come up with some more functionality in the later updates. HTH, 73! Linas LY2H

      Hello Gust! As I get it, in FT8CN , the logs could only be organized in the browser on any external computer or device. The app exports in ADIF already, no more conversion needed.
      First, you need to click on the "QSO logs" tab in the FT8CN. When the internal log opens, you need to click on the top-left icon with the arrow in it . The pop-up window pops and tells you what to do next. It gives you an IP address which you need to enter into the browser of any computer being on the same wi-fi network as your FT8CN device. After done, you are in the internal website of the FT8CN app. From there you can choose what you wanna do with your logs, Export option among others. If you click on Export logs, the list of all the logs will open. Choose Download All or Download Unconfirmed , and the file with extention .adi will be downloaded to your external computer ( NOT the phone where your FT8CN sits). You may do whatever you want with this .adi file. HTH, have fun! 73! Linas LY2H
