- The video showcases a new mode with beta firmware, enabling cat control and audio over USB. Rob highlights portability and connects an antenna,
Rob (K5CHA) discusses (tr)uSDX and FT8 using the FT8CN app on Android & demonstrates how to set up the (tr)uSDX radio with the beta firmware update that allows CAT control and audio over USB. He walks through the process of connecting the radio to an Android device running the FT8CN app, and shows how to change frequencies and receive signals through a USB connection. This setup is perfect for portable operations like SOTA or POTA activations. Follow along as Rob hooks up the antenna and continues the demo, concluding with the importance of an external power supply for optimal performance.

0:00 - 0:09: Introduction by Rob (K5CHA) about discussing (tr)uSDX and FT8.
0:09 - 0:27: Mention of using the FT8CN app and a new mode with beta firmware developed by DL2MAN and Guido's driver for Windows. However, the focus is on using Android, eliminating the need for the driver.
0:27 - 0:50: Presentation of the (tr)uSDX with the beta firmware that supports cat control and audio over USB. The setup involves an Android device with the FT8CN app.
0:50 - 1:30: Description of the setup, which includes a USB cable, a hub for OTG hosting, and the radio's power status.
1:31 - 2:16: Demonstration of connecting the Android device to the radio via USB and the automatic detection by the FT8CN app. The app prompts for a serial port connection.
2:16 - 2:52: Explanation of changing frequencies on the app and how it reflects on the radio. The portability of the setup is highlighted, especially for SOTA or POTA activations using a QRP rig.
2:52 - 3:32: Transition to connecting the antenna for a demo. Discussion of rig control settings in the app, including setting up call signs, cat control, B rate, and radio selection.
3:32 - 4:16: Observation of incoming contacts on the app once the antenna is connected. Mention of using cat control with FT8CN for transmitting and tracking CQs.
4:16 - 5:18: Conclusion highlighting the use of (tr)uSDX radio with an Android device and the FT8CN app. Emphasis on the beta firmware's capabilities and the importance of using an external power supply for optimal performance. - Hry
Great Video. Thanks!!
This was of Great help! Latest version of FT8CN gives possibility to select TruSDX in two modes , audio over CAT or TS-480 emulation mode. First is the proffered way. Haven't tested the second one.
Fantastic video, thanks for going over this. I was hoping the beta firmware would work with CAT control on FT8CN but didn't find a whole lot online about it. Planning on using this for some POTA activations soon, thanks for spending the time on this.
Thanks for the kind comment! I’m planning on going out and recording an activation with this soon with my new POTAble EFHW here in Austin. Glad the video was useful, I didn’t find a video out there, so I made one!

First question, did you do a follow up video? Second, how do you determine a contact was made?
I haven't been successful with USB only. I do have to updated (tu)uSDX firmware.
Thanks!
Amazing!
Thanks!
What filter width did you set on the Trusdx
So, which beta version do we need to install to get this working? I've currently got 2.00i, which I think is the current release. Do I just install the latest beta?
Any idea why in QSO tab all contacts are Unconfirmed?
What Android device are you using?
Great Video, Please report back on your activation. I have been thinking about getting a (tru)uSDX for when I travel. I am curious if you need some ferrite between the phone and radio.
Good point, and I already bought a bunch of ferrites cores and added to my new USB-C host cable.
I've also been so laggy on the activation, I'll definitely post up soon.
@@robertpastorella Great, it will be interesting if you have any issues with heat running FT8
Bump. How did the activation go?
@@abrahamnehemias-xt2qd I was able to do a activation down at the creek, but I didn’t record it. I’m away from my radios right now, but I will def get an activation up soon with a full test with the new beta too
i've got "comunication error with rig" message most of the time i'm connect tu CAT usb cable
Check to make sure you're using the right COM port in the settings. At least that's usually the culprit with WSJT-X and flRig.
