    Hi Griffin, I've been watching your stuff since you first took over Indy Mogul. I wanted to say I'm very impressed with your work. It always blows my mind that you can keep up with trends in video while still keeping a style that is so distinctly yours. I'll look back on some of your older videos and your improvement is astonishing. You keep getting better and better. Love your work and aspire to be a full-time filmmaker myself someday, you have really inspired me to do the best with what I have. Hope I can see your stuff on the big screen someday!
    Cheers,
    Robert

    Er, I don't know if Mr. Skillshare will be happy about that. If you read the ToS at his website, there's this line: "You represent and warrant that you are at least 16 years of age. If you are under age 16, you may not, under any circumstances or for any reason, use the Service."
    ;-) oh boy is he funny.

    Hey Griffin not sure if you read the comments but just wanted to say thanks for all you do man. I've followed you since the Indy Moguls days, and you are genuinely one of the main reasons I went into art and have garnered such of love of film making and documentaries. I've been wanting to write a comment like this for actual years, but better late then never. I hope all is well, and congrats with your newborn.

    Camera on a tripod, mic on a mic stand with a boom arm. Come in high, or come in low. Having zero budget for anything like that, my favourite, though, is Sony wireless mics. Robust cases and mics, solid wireless signal. Yes, full-size mics sound better, but background sound is better with a lav.

  • @SamuelRiveraFilms
    @SamuelRiveraFilms Před 5 lety

    Never thought about taking a plain background shot! Thank you!!

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety +1

      Often I forget to intentionally film a clean backplate, but it's usually not hard to find one at the start or end of the interview. But when I can remember, it's not a bad idea to ask your subject to step out of frame at the end, while you keep the camera rolling.

    • @SamuelRiveraFilms
      @SamuelRiveraFilms Před 5 lety

      Griffin Hammond I plan on doing that moving forward. Doesn’t really hurt to have it on hand just in case. Ideally how long would you record a plain background? 1 minute?

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety +1

      Samuel Rivera Not even that long. I usually record for 10 seconds. If I need more, I loop it: play the backplate once forward, then once backward, then once forward, etc. That way it loops seamlessly, and I can still see the ISO noise movement that video has, but stills don't.

    Great quick lesson! Nice to see ya working with Panasonic as they move into FF Market. Honestly don't like the S1, the S1R,, size of the lenses or the outrageous pricing! Panasonic could have done better!!! For this kind of money I will move to Medium format sensor cameras which are much superior.

    What even is the problem with getting the mic in the shot of interviews? I can understand for an actual scene or anything, but for an interview? I'm sure people will say "It's distracting" but like it's already not that interesting to have to look at someone talking into or near a camera. tho, it is the little details that just adds to making yourself come off as higher production value

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety

      You're right-in narrative, filmmakers go to great lengths to suspend disbelief and hide the production process from the audience. But in documentary, the act of filmmaking is often acknowledged to the viewer, so seeing a mic doesn't change their understanding of the story. I just love that filmmaking gives me the power to hide my mistakes, so I'll usually take the opportunity to make myself appear more competent.

    Do you like the sound of the shotgun mic over lav?

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety +1

      I do. In a loud environment, I need a lav, which can get closer and isolate the voice better. But if it's moderately quiet, I prefer the frequency range of a good shotgun mic, and I like that it's not hanging off a shirt.

  • @ThomazMartinez

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety

      Let's Go Outdoors, I'll use a wireless lav in a loud environment, but otherwise I prefer the sound of a shotgun mic. It doesn't rub against clothes, better frequency range.

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety

      aixpress I don't always love the way a lav sounds. It might brush against clothing. I have to hide it. I prefer the frequency response of my shotgun mic. And not every interviewee-especially in fast news gathering-is willing to wear a lav.

    • @WasmitReisen
      @WasmitReisen Před 5 lety

      Griffin Hammond Hmm, don't you think, it is more confusing for the person being interviewed, when you are doing aerobics in front of him with the shotgun...?? I have my experience after 40 years as tv correspondent. People forget the lav within minutes, and the interview situation is much more relaxed, because I can concentrate on the guest, like in a normal talk. And the sound is better in 90%. Maybe in the situation of a spontaneous street interview, we definitely need a shotgun in the hand of the interviewer. But then it makes sense, if you also see him in picture

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  Před 5 lety

      aixpress You're right about the importance of a relaxed, comfortable interviewee. I find my interviews are often pretty short, and I manage to hold their eye contact well, so they forget the mic pretty fast. But yeah, for a longer interview, if my arms get tired, that could become distracting.
