- In this short tutorial I'll show you how I dye papers for my junk journals, and how you too can use this method which produces lovely results in the easiest and cheapest way!
You will need:
- food colouring in water (or if coffee dying - use the darkest, cheapest instant coffee jar you can find).
- spray bottle
- storage tub - this just keeps your area clean. You can use whatever storage container you have lying around, but i find a deep storage container works best to stop the spray from getting all over your surfaces, or the paper blowing away in the wind when its drying.
- gloves (to avoid having blue hands for a couple of days!)
and of course: a variety of your favourite papers, ephemera or even fabrics for dyeing! I once dyed an entire wedding dress in food colouring, so this method does also work for fabric!

This is great, thank you! I've tried so many ways, and this is one of my favorites. You can also layer laces and stencils in between for beautiful effects. Your pup is so cute!!! I am also one who appreciates the shorter tutorials for ideas like this.
I love layering too! I sped the video up but there is one piece of paper there which had the big doily stuck on top and it produced a really cool pattern underneath! I also used to have vinyl lace (which is pretty hard to come by these days without thrifting it) and that really produces great results :)
You gave alot of good tips and I appreciate the inexpensive and fast way to create colorful paper. Thank you for posting this. Can't wait to try it !
I like shorter videos, too. Thank you for sharing your paper-dying techniques.
I love the technique you used, very helpful. You forgot to show us the vellum paper .
Looks so easy. My husband hates when I take over the kitchen to coffee dye paper.
With this method you’ll never need to burn paper in the oven again haha! You only need to wait for a sunny day :)
Gorgeous papers! I'm going to make some!
Thanks for sharing your fun with us...and thank you for keeping the video short 'n' sweet! ❤
Beautiful results!
I especially like the pieces that had already been coffee-dyed. I hadn’t thought of using food coloring, but that is a great low-cost method! (In the past, I’ve added color by spraying other stains and dyes.) Something I’ve done when coffee or tea dying is sandwich the dyed papers while they are wet between stencils or those plastic table place mats that are molded and textured (from the discount stores). That can create some lovely patterns. And, of course, once they’re dry, you can dye them again with different colors to get some layered effects on the paper.
Thank you for the great demo! ❤
You’re welcome! These are all great ideas you’ve suggested :) the great think about foos colouring is definitely the cost!. I have “rainbow unicorn” coloured papers that i’ve dyed o3 or 4 times, and they turn out amazing.
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing.
Yes, thanks for the short tutorial. Wonderful ideas. The quicker things, like base papers, can be accomplished the better. Thank you.
Beautiful results! And thank you for keeping it simple. I can't wait to do this with my grandsons.
Me too, get to the point is perfect !!! Thank you for this video!! 👍
Food colour dyed papers & fabrics aren't colour fast so they'll fade over time.
Also, if you use wet glue or mediums the colours will bleed.
Heat setting doesn't alter this.
But overall it's super fun & the colour ranges can be stunning ❤
Thanks, all good tips, the expensive alcohol inks or veggie/natural dyes DO last longer and hold up a bit better but I just dont have the budget or time/space to collect bags full of avocado pits XD
I still prefer food colouring for an easy and cost effective way to add colour to journals :) I confess I don’t use wet glues or mediums so haven’t encountered bleeding colours, but this might be important for some people! Thanks for the tips!
Its a very fun way to dye and produces such bright results!
This is interesting. So you can’t make this color fast or last longer? How much longer do you think the food dyes last or what other inks would you recommend. Thanks!
Great video it is the easiest way to dye paper I have ever seen. Thank you so much
So glad I could help!
I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for all the tips.
OMG! I have just bought the small pack of food colouring and was planning to give paper dying a go this weekend and I had wondered if I needed gloves ! You have answered any question I had and I am giving it a go - I love the colours and I can see a mermaid journal on the way - thank you for sharing - you had fabulous results
Thank you! Yes definitely give it a go (but with gloves!) haha either way the staining only lasts a couple of days and can probably be scrubbed off quicker but I dont mind! Good luck!
Such a wonderful easy method will need to go to bunnings 🏃♀️thank you for sharing 😍
Thanks for showing this! I've been doing paper this way with coffee and tea. Now, I want to try food coloring! i never could get into the other methods, but this is so easy!
What fabulous results. I particularly like those that look black / are dark in parts.
My dyeing experience is limited to using avocado skins/seeds. And coffee dyeing. Ive been collecting some rusty objects i want to try dyeing with
Thanks for sharing. I have a cracked tub I almost threw out....IV salvaged it from the trash bag!! Trying this today.
Yay! mine is also in bad shape but works for paper dyeing haha!
What a great easy way! Will definitely give this a try ❤
Thank You ❤
Thank you for this tutorial! I have found paper dyeing to be a little complicated but your method looks easier with great results!
Thank you, i am just getting started, or maybe, a better discription, would be, i am just threatning to get started. I have collected plenty of, 'stuff' and loads of ideas, i just need to jump in!! But, i do intend to try this method. Have a blessed day everyone, and happy crafting!😊
All the best starting this crazy hobby! Haha
These papers came out amazing! 🎉🎉
I really loved this short but informative tutorial 🥰 they turned out so beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Ohhh I’ve had the same method for 7 years now but I will probably be changing it quite often to this one!!! I was thinking those papers needed to be in an ocean journal! lol - I do thrifty Thursdays too so just found your channel through that! 🩷🩷🩷
Just as the video description, couldn't be easier!! Thank you.
Beautiful papers thanks for the tips.
Totally awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent, thanks for this...🥰
Great easy way to dye paper for sure... love it... Cheers for sharing..
Thank you. This method sounds easy. Others were so detailed I felt I couldn't do it. Your process says to me Yes! I'm going to give it a try.🙂
Oh i’m so glad I could help you!
great video - thankis. Glad you didnt spray the dog!!! lol
Lovely dye job hon! I use food color and also fruit teas and fruit juice. I heard Kool aid works too wanna try it soon!❤😊
Oh yes ive heard of kool aid dyeing too, but we dont have that in Australia! Anything coloured will work fine, just try it out- why not? :) have fun!
❤❤
Tyvm for this video! I've thought about selling dyed papers and such for quite a while now because I love the whole process. I'm just not sure how to start once the dying is over. And I need only so much for myself. Wonderful colors you created. Ty again. Be safe
You’re welcome! I used to sell them but I only take requests selling them now, as I just dont have the time (although it doesnt take much time at all!), good luck !
I can't figure out how to price them is my hangup. I want to be fair to the customer as well as myself
Waaaa thk u for this. Very excited to try. Wanna know: is there a brown food colouring to make ‘coffee & tea’ dyes? And if not what colours would u mix to get that effect?
I’m not sure but I think probably yes, you could purchase at a specialty craft or baking store? I still suggest just using the cheapest and strongest instant coffee mixed with water for coffee dyed paper
#replay I love how these papers turned out. After the journal is made, if someone handled the pages and had a little moisture on their hands, would that dye stay in their hands?
No, just a little moisture wont rub off onto their hands, however if the paper is soaked again in water the colours will bleed
New to your channel. How would you make pink shades
The Queen brand of food colouring I use (in Australia) has a colour called “rose pink” which I use to make pink tones. I dilute with water depending on how light or dark I want the colour. Boiling avocado stones also produces a very light dusty pink dye that is very pretty, although not as vibrant as food colouring, and of course requires effort to collect the stones!
What is the ratio of food coloring to water?
There is no special ratio - add more or less water depending on the intensity if colour
How can I get a rich teal blue color???
Try to find a “teal” food dye and use a ratio of more dye to water. I used just a basic “blue” for this project and by adjusting the amount of water i can create lighter or darker colours
Well this by far is the easiest way I have seen to dye paper. I did some coffee dye in the oven and that was way too much time and effort 😂
I’ll tell you how I’m gonna dry my paper I’m gonna put it in my car cause the sun shines in there and it gets so warm. Be like an oven.
Omg thats a great idea!!!
