I like that they label some bug fixes with insane ramblings (like when sniper tried to eat his gun) without elaborating. You just wonder what the hell were these people doing.
Probably to stick a bit with the game's humour.

@ Probably. Though the style of the game does make it so that one line bug descriptions can sound silly even when written in theory straight faced. Note like "Fixed a bug where players who get sent to X would not have visible Y" could be from just about any game, TF2 just happens to have hell and bumper cars in it.
Sniper eating his gun, was because the player swaped from heavy at a precise moment for sandwich eating.
Interestingly enough, like how this bug tried calling for a non-existent Gordon Freeman, the “Sniper eating his gun” bug was because of the game calling for removed animations for a scrapped weapon (The High Noon).
Behind each weirdly specific patch note where you wondered "Why did that even happen?" is a bigger question:
"How did someone figure that out?"
There's a story behind each one, and the developers want to convey at least a little bit of their hunting story. These kinds of patch notes are like turning the bug into a wall mounted trophy.
If they just put Gordon Freeman on every map so code doesn't freak out it would be very VALVE solution

Source is literally just modified GoldSrc which is just modified WorldCraft...
Source 2 is built from the ground up.
A fun fact is, it's called "Source" because the entire code within Valve is "Open Source", meaning if you changed something, EVERY other game would change.
Which is why it was an unspoken rule to NEVER touch Source, no matter how god awful it runs or is, because changing an RGB value in Half-Life 2, could break L4D1 for some reason.
Source 2 is effectively, what if we take Source, and remove 20+ years of code, and THEN recode it better.
I've said it before I'll say it again, it's amazing how much mileage people are getting out of Gordon's Alyx model even though it was never intended to be seen directly or in good lightning.

Team Fortress is literally the first free dlc Valve released in the form of HL TFC. I bet the core foundation of teamplay multiplayer was built for it, and got adapted for every other game afterwards that needed teams.

This completely nonfunctional code causing a crash makes me wonder how much more junk is running in TF2's background that does absolutely nothing but hog processor time.
Probably comparable, if not less of a performance hit, vs other commercial engines where everything is generalized/abstracted as much as possible in order to provide functionality that works for all types of games.
Not to get too technical, but a bunch of ''if'' statements that ALWAYS fail will be practically negligible performance-wise due to cpu branch prediction. Certainly can introduce unexpected bugs though.

@@davymachinegun5130 I mean, almost certainly? There's likely to be a lot of ''utility functions'' and other code that is independent of the actual design/structure of the engine, that works perfectly fine and there would be no reason to change or remove it.
Something like the auto-aim functionality for example, would boil down to nothing more than ''standard'' math where you have a starting and ending position and you calculate the angles/direction; maybe the function takes in an explicit ''Gordon object'', maybe it's a general ''character object'', or it could literally just be the start/end positions(which it would ultimately grab from the character object). VERY likely that it would be structured function(GORDON) -> calls function(end_pos, start_pos). The final function would probably be used in many places within the codebase, for things like projectile trajectories, character movement, physics in general, etc.
While there is a lot of validity to complain about ''20'' year old code, it's also kind of an ignorant complaint if you're getting granular.

It was yet andother day with no updates, I was playing 2fort on EU servers at night. The server was almost empty. All of a sudden I hear familiar audio. Everyone else disconnects and the only one left on the enemy team is just called Mr. Freeman. I think nothing of it, and continue playing. But once I find the enemy, they are playing as the tenth class. Gordon Freeman. I shoot at him, but he just stands there and takes it. Eventually I get kicked from the server with the quote "the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference."
