Pokemon Colosseum: A Brave NEW Take on the Franchise

  • Pokemon Colosseum was something very new for the Pokemon franchsie to try when home consoles were getting more powerful and offering new avenues to explore multiple video game properties. While Pokemon would have many titles on home consoles, none of them would venture to be like the handheld RPG experience until Nintendo released the GameCube and The Pokemon Company was ready to venture into a new territory with Pokemon Colosseum.

The 3 things that lured me to this game was
    1. All battles were double battle which was my favorite type of battle.
    2. Espeon and Umbreon were made into your starter pokémon which was pretty cool and unique having a psychic and dark type into your starters instead of the usual Fire grass water.
    3. The only pokémon you can add in your team are shadow pokémon which are limited which pushes the player to actually experiment with team composition with Pokémon some more unorthodox choices like Misdreavus, Sunskirt and Slugma.

One of my favorite facts about Colosseum is that Hiromoto SIN-Ichi, the guy behind the character designs and art direction for Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, also wrote the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi manga. The cool part? He jumped on board with Pokémon Colosseum because the idea of cute and cuddly Pokémon in a gritty Star Wars-esque desert landscape was hilarious to him.

I've played Colosseum back in the day and I really enjoyed it. Sure there's a lot of points in the game where it tends to spike up in difficulty, especially in the final battle, but those pushed me to come up with better strategies and overcome my opponents to win the day. I especially love both Wes and Rui as the main characters as the former is really cool and badass, especially in the intro to the game, and the latter is another one of my crushes as a kid. Plus, I got to use both Espeon and Umbreon as my Starter Pokémon and I love both of them. Had the game been released a generation later with the Physical/Special split and the new Pokémon, yes, but I still enjoyed them even with the old mechanics from the first three generations.

They're one of my favorite villain teams because not only were their uniforms cool and unique, but they also had a lot more variety when it comes to their Teams. None of this "single-type" mook nonsense that the other Teams have going for them.

Coliseum was such an ambitious idea that was clearly somewhat limited by hardware, and in a generation of Nintendo hardware where every other team has been bringing those ideas home to roost, it’ll never not be at least a little silly to me that Pokemon seems content to quadruple down on undercooking its experiences. It didn’t affect my enjoyment though (I did figure it out eventually) and it was hype to finally beat it.

    @cardsfanbj Před 7 měsíci +2

I loved Colosseum. The fact that you start off with Espeon and Umbreon rather than elemental starter, and that they were already level 25 and 26. Or that double battles were an integral part of the game and not just a couple of them sprinkled throughout the game was awesome. I was 13 when the game came out, so I really liked the more mature tone of the game, playing as a reformed bad guy rather than some 10 year old kicked out of his house and told to go on a journey.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to preorder it, so I never got Jirachi that way. I had to use an Action Replay to get one. (I don't think I knew about the bonus, and I don't think I actually got Sapphire itself until after Colosseum was released, anyway).
The mechanics of shadow Pokemon did get a little annoying at times, where they didn't gain XP and levels as you battled, except that once you purified them they gained back what they should have learned, so you're facing off against stronger enemies with weaker Pokemon trying to purify them through battles. Or how they only have one move, Shadow Rush, which deals recoil damage, until you purify them 1/4 of the way and they gain a regular move back.
I don't think I ever got to the point of unlocking Ho-oh, though. I think I finished Mt. Battle but I didn't purify all the shadow Pokemon before doing so.

I absolutely love this game. It is a classic. Genius Senority was such a good development company and I'm so incredibly sad they didn't go on to keep making Pokemon games after these 2. These games are great. I'm sad Ninendo never did a double battle only game like this and the sequel again. It was so much fun.
I would love for these to get a good remake/re-release on the switch. What I really want is a 3rd game in the series, but I don't think that will ever happen so i really just wanna be able to bye the games on a modern console.

Pokemon Colosseum was my first entry into the world of Pokemon. I never got very far in the Gale Of Darkness sequel, though, as I grow bored easily when it comes to repeated world designs.
I purchased the game out of boredom of watching all these commercials about the various games, but I was not expecting the one thing that drew me into this particular game: The story. With the craze that the TCG still is to this day I was not expecting anything out of the video game except for yet another reason for the children to continue punching each other over who had the best team.
What drew me into the game was the variety of creatures, not just the various moves. The strategy needed to win was something that even my father got into as he would watch me play the game and see my occasional struggles against the AI / Bosses. He would also comment on the 'Not Very Effective' notation on the screen even though it would be an OHKO moment. He was drawn into games that required the player to form strategies, to be forced to THINK about what to do next. He was drawn to games like Metroid, for example.
After finishing the game I went on to the other games of the series and purchased Pokemon Sapphire for the GBA, and the cartridge still has several of the pokemon I pulled from Colosseum to it. After beating Sapphire I went to Emerald, expecting a completely different game. I grew bored of it very quickly due to it being the exact same game as Sapphire, though, not even progressing beyond the first town.
Ever since then, I have played the majority of the games that came out, even managing to locate HeartGold and SoulSilver at a Gamestop. I avoided buying the companion game to the specific generation in question except for the Mystery Dungeons. At one point I even had the Gameboy Player addon for the Gamecube and even the Wifi USB Controller just to get my DS connected.
It s definitely thanks to Colosseum that I began my journey down the path of Pokemon games, and I started at a ripe 'old' age of 25. The one game I absolutely refuse to touch, even after trying it on the Bluestacks Mobile emulator, is Pokemon Go. No story. Mindless wandering in the real world. We've all heard the horror stories of those outright idiots who had no sense of self preservation....
After the release of Sword and Shield, I have started to become less involved with pokemon in general. I never advanced further than the second town of Sword. In Arceus, while I was finding the story to be quite refreshing AND amusing in many spots, especially the way they made the defeated 'mon shrink to tiny size an actual canon thing, I just stopped playing and went on to other things. I have not purchased any of the titles that came out after that.
They need to make more Pokemon Mystery Dungeons!

My biggest gripe with the pokemon games on the switch is that they absolutely could have given us the dynamic attack/getting hit animations and cool ass camera angles that we had in this game but they just didnt. Colosseum and XD are my favorite pokemon mainly because how animated the pokemon are, like when espeon gets hit it flinches then flicks its head back like its trying to brushing the damage off, or how Seedot go goes for a little spin when he gets hit. its those animations that really make the pokemon feel like living creatures in the world and it opens up alot of potential for alot more personality for each pokemon beyond just how they look and the pokedex.

I think putting in the hands of developers that had little to no experience with Pokemon was a brilliant move. It allowed them to use a different perspective on the series and present new ideas without having biases or being tied to the original series.

As an adult playing this game after my experiences with Pokemon games (including XD: Gale of Darkness) Colosseum still surprised me with a fun challenge that made me appreciate the Gamecube Pokemon games more.
The most memorable fight for me personally was at Agate where it was Umbreon and Espeon vs Shadow Hitmontop and Wobbufett that trapped my Pokemon and was spamming Destiny Bond. Afraid to have either Pokemon knocked out (and not kill Hitmontop with Espeon) I ended up using the infinite Poke Ball glitch as a means to make the most out of Espeon's action while my Umbreon chipped the Hitmontop in small increments. Shadow Tag + Destiny Bond + starring down a Fighting-type Shadow Pokemon was an awkward position to be in, but interesting problem to solve.

I remember my brother was the one to rent this from Hollywood video when we were kids and him just hogging it for that whole time lol so as cool as I thought this was back then I wasn’t fully exposed to it until I bought myself a copy last year and beat it for the first time. Needless to say, this was one of the most difficult and fun pokemon games I ever had the pleasure of playing. Getting my first legitimate gen 3 ho oh was also a massive achievement I was finally able to reach for my 10 year old self(:

They really need to put these on the Switch. Either a re-release or on the Gamecube online. I dont care.

I have such insanely vivid memories of going to my friends house and playing this with him. Never got to own the game myself. Now I probably never will because it’s like $150 or more. But just goes to show you how much value is in a game like this. They really should’ve done a remaster on the Nintendo switch or something. Would’ve made them billions.

I still got my legit Jirachi on my ruby copy from it.
We tried for hours to spawn a shiny on a bootlegged psychical rom hack (Pokémon perla Verizon which had Lucario on the cover lol). But never snagged a shiny I gave up when I found one with great IV’s. Between the Jirachi, Milotic (good lord fishing for febass was such a pain) and a shiny crobat, I considered it as complete as it could be for me. A very treasured copy.

Pokemon Colosseum is one of my favorite games of all time. I have so many great memories with it. I think the main thing that makes these games so great is that they have a more mature feel. They could appeal to kids and adults alike. They're also very cyberpunky which is an awesome overworld style. As I've grown older, I've found it harder to stay engaged with the handheld games because they feel too much like children's games now. We can only wish Gamefreak would lean more into mature Pokémon titles like these, and even the Pokémon Origins series they did years ago.

Been playing since my dad bought me Blue in a wal mart in 1998. Finished the scarlet/violet part 1 dlc last month. To this day, the region of Orre is easily the most interesting in all of pokemon, and I long for a remake or to revisit the region. if I had the same history w the franchise as I did when Legends Arceus came out, I imagine I would have felt similar feelings for colosseum. Too bad they're both destined to be part of history.
