    Thanks you so much for the video! Mechanics put the wrong size belt on mine so now I'm going to replace with OEM part myself to stop it from squealing at start ups. Bob Blarney's comment has a great tip of not using a pry bar, but rather, use the provided 1/2" square hole pointed to the left/ passenger side at the top of power steering pump and use a breaker bar or ratchet to tension the belt. Much better leverage and no denting scratching surrounding parts!

    Nice video. All this time I thought my Honda had one belt. I see that it has two now. But I have never had the belts changed. So the other day I sprayed "belt conditioner" on them and now my belts make this strange noise. I read that the belt conditioner can also mess it up too. I should've left well enough alone.
    But I think I will change the belts anyway since I never have.

      thurm101 Belt conditioner only last for a while before the lubricate dry's up... But I would never use anything on the belt since they're suppose to be dry and when the belt do squeal, that's a sign that its your belt that is going bad.

  • @Anguilla2001
    @Anguilla2001 Před 9 lety +5

    How can you determine the correct tension for the belts? Would a torque wrench help? I'm afraid without experience I would leave it too tight or too loose and either burn the alternator or the belts would wear out too fast.

    • @Eckster
      @Eckster Před 7 lety +3

      In this case it's simply tightening the power steering back into place, basically you don't directly tighten or loosen the belt, you just tighten the other component into place and it's already in the right position for ideal tension.

    First this applies to 4 cylinder Honda for that time frame, the v6 models have one serpentine belt which powers alternator and power steering. Second this isn't your drive belt, it's your belts for power steering and alternator. Not your engine's drive belt which is much more complexed and cost much more.

    • @NutzAboutBolts
      @NutzAboutBolts  Před 5 lety

      Vangundy ch I think you’re confused, the one that drives the cam, water pump and crank pulleys are called timing belt, some have the timing chain.This one is called drive belts since there’s 2 belts driving the pulleys, the one belt that drives all the pulleys are called serpentine belt.

      If you have AC for your car, there will be an extra pulley so the belt will need to be longer, if you don’t have AC, then your vehicle don’t have the compressor AC pulley for the belt, so it’ll be shorter. Hope that helps.

      Yeah, I went outside right after watching your video and did the job. It's a little tricky, but with a little twisting and turning I got the belts on. I just thought I'd mention. there is a 1/2 in insertion hole on the top of the Power steering pump to fit a breaker bar for tensioning and I thought I could use my 1/2 in. Craftsman ratchet (don't have a breaker bar), but the head was too big to get in there. I suppose with a short extension I could have used it, but didn't have one, so I used your method and pried it to get tension. Anyway, thanks again.

    Changed my Alternator belt, no more squeak on cold start.
    My issue though is after putting the power steering belt back on it's insanely difficult to turn the steering wheel. Maybe my belt is too tight or too loose?
    Think I'll have to take it to the mechanic tomorrow, at least the alternator squeal seems fixed.

      @@NutzAboutBolts Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try that. It's really tight already it seems but maybe I just gotta throw more elbow grease in there.

      @@NutzAboutBolts Yeah. Power steering was perfect before I did the job. I just took out the power steering belt like shown in the vid, because my Alternator belt needed replacing due to squealing on startup.
      After putting the power steering belt back on, the belt's chirping, as well as my power steering is insanely tight. When I turn the steering wheel in park for example the pulley seizes & stops spinning.
