I love the detail in the Used Record story, it's a 45rpm record and Junji Ito even drew the little adapter that goes in the middle for regular record players to be able to play that disc.
I swear I can smell that Shivers story, seriously, imagine the smell in that bed.
I absolutely love the story of the dreaming guy. I think it's one of the scariest stories Junji Ito ever made and if I ever dream after reading that story I don't think I would ever recover.
Dave nailed what is most amazing about Ito, the dream logic. It's also so incredibly original and out there. Even the not so great stories are worth a read, you finish them and think "ok, that wasn't so great, but I've never read anything like it before".
Anyways, fantastic episode! Top ten material indeed. Got a great laugh this morning with you guys. I hope you do every Junji Ito book in the future.
As for irrational fears, how every single person in the world isn't mortally afraid of spiders is beyond me. They're quite literally Lovecraftian. I almost pass out at the sight of them. Ugh.
Completely agree on the dream logic point. It really is one of the defining elements of Junji Ito's work and if readers can't get on board with that, I can see them finding him a less rewarding read.
The Grease story is so disgusting in every level. Just imagining the cold, wet clothes, carpet and beds in that apartment. The walls slick with oil... gag. And that's even before Goro shows his pimply little face.
YES! Love Junji Ito and love listening to you fools talk about these insanely weird stories. The Long Dream is my favourite story in this collection because of the strength of the idea. Almost a transhuman, existential, nightmare. So fucking wild and that nasty rotten mutant man body is just the tops! I hope Junji Ito lives forever and keeps making these goofy ass stories. Nothing better.

Okay, I spoke too soon when I said the Long Dream was my favourite. Grease has one of the BEST Ito images ever - that fucking grease pimple waterfall attack is WILD.

When it comes fears, I got a lot of them. Something something anxiety. But I do share Neil's fear of the Ocean, Deep Water and what lurks beneath. I'm not a great swimmer to the point where I think it's fair to say I can't swim, but the idea of just... Something so alien and familiar terrifies and comforts me to no end.
What doesn't comfort me in any sort of way is holes. Tiny holes nestled together. Fuck that shit. Nothing good comes from that.
I'm scared of acid attacks, dementia, anesthesia awareness and of course... posts

im afraid of toilets in places they shouldn't be, i had a dream where there was one just out in an open field and it was so offputting i cried.
My word. I'm still shaken from this. There's a twitter account called "Toilets with threatening auras" that I recommend you stay far away from.
What an Episode! That grease story had to power through. So crazy. If that was first or earlier on in the book i dont think I would have continued.
I read the long dream many years ago on the internet and loved it. Picked up this book recently, watched your video, and finally got through reading it.
Awesome to hear Benjamin! Yeah, the Greased story would've been a bold way to kick off the book. Probably a good choice to save it to the end... but man what an ending it was.

Snakes, really have a healthy distaste of snakes. Large groups of people as well, mostly from experience and having them turn on me. Open water, have dreams of drowning. So being chased by a crowd of people into the ocean and encountering a serpent would be a bad day..

Next Halloween you should do an episode dedicated to Junji Ito's manga about his cats' adventures

If you're gonna do more manga I'd recommend two books for different reasons.
Blame!, for great art and funny moments I'm not sure are intentional, and Chainsaw Man. Latter is brutal and funny, former is more atmospheric
I've read a little of Chainsaw Man. Cool action moments- but nothing really grabbed me past the character design... I've heard great things about Berserk- but that goes for like 1000 books, right?

Chainsaw got me cos it was surprisingly mature in how it handled the characters. The bit with eyepatch lady for one.

Ito does nothing for me and his art gets really bland looking after a while. Wholly overrated.
I would argue that his regular life stuff is pretty simple, but his supernatural stuff is more detailed and I think very creative in look and feel. I get it may not be for everyone, but of the many things I've read, none are really like his.
Overrated doesn't mean anything other than "I don't like this popular thing". It really speaks more about you than the work. It's fine to dislike art others connect with, there's plenty of art out there to enjoy.
