    I have been working with colored pencils for about 45 years now. It's insane and how I started out. My first set was Prismacolor and Still my go to. I have so many sets of colored pencils. My favs are Prismacolor, Holbein, and Polychromos. I love Inktense and Albrect Druer water color pencils.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Yeah, I still love my Prismacolors! I still use them quite a bit. My main go-to's are Holbein and Derwent lightfast. I used to use the Polychromos a lot more, but they are harder on my hand, so I don't use them as often as I used to.

    Derwent light fast and Derwent drawing are my all-time favorite pencils to work with although there are colors from the polychromos line but you could not pay me to give up because I draw a lot of voter realistic animals. The big thing about the Derwent light fast is that they are Derwent very first oil-based pencil and yet they feel as smooth as any amazing wax pencil if not smoother. I love that Derwent made these two lines to be colors from nature they are not fluorescence they are not neons they are not colors we don't seem naturally.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Před dnem +1

      I agree when it comes to the Derwent Lightfast! I love their colors and how smooth they are to blend for an oil-based pencil! I will always have a special place in my heart for the Derwent Drawing pencils, too. They are definitely two of my most used lines of pencils.

    Absolutely fascinating video. Thanks Shana. I too love Inktense, but had the Derwent watercolour pencils first. Now, because Inktense are so vibrant even when washed out, I struggle with Derwent’s original watercolour line. Obviously, I still have then all. I am, unlike yourself, first and foremost an art supply collector. I wouldn’t even call myself an artist, not even if whispered quietly to myself. I find true artists, such as yourself to be an utter joy to watch, as well as incredibly relaxing. Thanks again, and I look forward to watching more of this series over the coming weeks/months/year! 🤷‍♀️❤️🖌️🎨👩🏻‍🎨❤️

    Intense uses dyes instead of pigments so they are inherently more fugitive but the color payout and layerability is worth it, especially if you sell prints!

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Před 2 měsíci

      They do seem very dye like, but on the Derwent website, they claim they are pigment-based. According to the Derwent website FAQ's under the question, "How would you describe the Derwent Inktense Product, Derwent answered: "Inktense is a pigment-based product that is extremely soluble in water, but has a transparent ink-like wash unlike a traditional watercolour. Inktense is also permanent when dry." And then when asked if they are dye-based or pigment-based, they answered:
      "Inktense is pigment based, but its unique formulation produces vibrant colours and washes." They are a pretty interesting and unique product for sure!
      Here is a link to the FAQ's so you can read more about them if you'd like. It's also where I found out that they aren't actually made of ink, lol. www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/#:~:text=Inktense%20is%20a%20pigment%2Dbased,is%20also%20permanent%20when%20dry.

I only saw one or two that I don’t have but then I have a few that I didn’t see, but you use yours so often, me… not so much. Perhaps I need to get them more accessible in the studio and test the waters with some mixed media, they would go good with watercolors. I don’t think I have as many drawers as you and certainly not as many as @robyounce644 lol a lot of mine are still in their tins or boxes on my shelf. Yes you are correct the Faber Castell lines, Polys and Albrechts do match, the colors are the same. I would love to see you use the Albrecht Durers, perhaps it will inspire me to use my own. I loved this video! I am a art supply "enthusiast", maybe hoarder to some people, lol. I love my Luminance, Polychromos, Derwent Drawing, and Inktense. I have been looking to get some watercolor pencils and from this video, I think I may like the Albrecht Durer better than the Derwent. I have the Cretacolor Marinos and they're okay but I've read conflicting information on their lightfastness. You said there will be a pastel video in the future, I'll look forward to it. Do you use Pastel Pencils ever? I have an old set from art school of the Stabilos they had us get for a class and last year bought a set of Conte's. I'd be curious if you have any in the different ways you use them, techniques, etc.

    With the Luminance I have problems with the greens. They are so scratchy! I can’t get it to blend very well. Sometimes it gets smudgy too 😫 I tried the lightfast but maybe the pencils and I don’t understand each other 🫣😂
    My go-to are the polychromos. They just lay right in my hand 🤷‍♀️ Better than all the Derwent ones (lightfast, inktense) and the luminance.
    My favourite waxy pencils…Arteza Expert. No idea about the lightfastness but they blend truly excellent and lay very well in my hand.
    The variety of colour of the Prisma’s are fantastic, but the quality is crappy nowadays.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Před 4 měsíci

      It's so funny how different pencils work differently depending on the person. We all have ones we get along with better! I love the Polychromos, but I get more hand cramps when I use them than I do my softer pencils. They feel fine in my hand, but I think it has to do with the amount of layering and the way I blend my pencils. So I don't use them as often as I used to, even though they give quality results. I do use at least one or two in most of my pieces for detail, but not for larger areas, and I never do a piece using only Polychromos anymore because of that.
      I used to have the Arteza back when they first came out, but there was a lot of confusion about their lightfast ratings back then. They were pretty good, but I never found myself reaching for them, so I gave them to my sister during one of the times I decluttered the studio.
      I agree about the Prismacolors. That company needs to get it together and bring back the old quality that Prismas used to be known for.
      I haven't noticed the issue with the green Luminance yet, but I have just lately started using them more, so I'm sure that will come up for me at some point since I love drawing landscapes!

    • @Art_by_Nicole
      @Art_by_Nicole Před 4 měsíci +1

      So funny indeed! With the artritis I thought the softer pencils would be better for my hands so invested in Luminance, Lightfast and Inktense (I feel like a spoiled brat naming all these brands). For me the thickness of the pencil is apparently important, because these pencils are thicker than polychromos, Prisma, Arteza and pablo. That’s why I am really hesitant to invest in the Derwent Drawing, because Derwent has thicker leads.
      The Pablo are good in my hand, but I think the colours aren’t as beautiful as the polychromos. Difficult to describe but they are a bit pale?
      I’m learning more and more how NOT to layer and still get beautiful blends. It’s better for my patience 😂

I think that Carandache should use a system to mark the kind of client the product is designed for. Faber Castell makes this very explicit: Green for professionals, Blue for art students, and eco/red for kids/Students (till high school, I mean).Carandache is a relly food brand, with amazing products, but this red lines are a bit confusing

I do have the 132 set of Prismas too. I have wanted Holbein and Caran d'Ache too, but I probably wont get those now, since I have way more pencils than I can possible use. I have the Brutfuner pastels (their holbein copy) and I also now have a Brutfuner 520 set, which are fairly cheap in quality, but for the price they are decent. Clearly those won't be lightfast, but that's fine. I have some other Faber Castel and Derwent sets too. Polychromis are definitely my favourite :)

      I have never tried the Brutfuner colored pencils, but I have heard some good things about them! Polychromos are wonderful! I definitely have more than I need, but it can be so hard to resist buying more supplies! LOL. I have been being pretty good lately as far as purchases go. I have been trying to focus on using what I already have.

      @@CautionArtistatPlay I understand it all. I keep buying more and more too, and I think I've also got enough for 3 life times 😂 But I also just ordered a couple of things today. There is no excuses not to create what I have. I don't mind having a little too much of everything. I've acquired a lot so I could have variety and I can pivot easily and do different mediums and styles and keep improving.

    I can’t use just colored pencils anymore because of nerve damage. I only use on top of watercolor. I gave my prismacolors to my granddaughter. A lot of them are the berol. Because I’m older they are all the older prismacolor, including discontinued colors, and I bet she has no idea how lucky she is, lol.

    Hi Shana! I really enjoyed this video, as I am a colored pencil and pastel artist. (I'm looking forward to your upcoming pastel video!) I'd like to see you do a project with the Albrecht Durer pencils. I agree with you on so many things...I love Prismas and so glad you were fair and gave the pros and cons of them. I also think the Luminance are scratchy. And I agree that the Pablos work great on sanded paper. (I like Lightfast on sanded paper, too.) What do you do with your pencil nubs? I try to use mine until I can't sharpen them anymore but then hate to throw them away. 🙂

      Hey Michele! I'm so glad you relate to so much of what I have said! Honestly, my stubs just kind of float around in with the rest of my pencils a lot of times! Lol, I'm not sure exactly what to do with them. With the water-soluble ones, I think it would be good to get the wood casing off and just use the cores in a palette like watercolors. But with regular stubs.. I honestly don't know, lol. I kind of want to figure out some sort of craft to do with them!

    Castle Earth Luminance is THE WORST texture of any pencil I've ever experienced. it feels like coloring with a rock! Otherwise I love the Luminance line, and the rest of the colors are just dreamy to work with. but yea, if I want a castle earth color, I'll just mix it myself with other browns.

    Sometimes some colors are naturally scratchy due to the pigment that was chosen, it's annoying but worth it for the lightfastness.

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Koh-I-Noor Polycolor also comes in a 144 set. I never bought any, I think they are underrated, not very talked about.

      I have a hard time finding Koh-I-Noor, and the places I shop typically don't have them open stock. But I do like them a lot. I have had mine for a long time and just never bothered expanding the set. Yeah, I have heard that too, about the Chromaflow and it being Derwents way of competing with Prismacolor. I bought a set of them when they first came out before they were sharing the lightfast ratings on them. They broke like crazy, even worse than my Prismas, at at the time, there was no way of knowing which colors were lightfast, so I ended up giving them away. I'm glad they now share the lightfast ratings for them. I have also heard a few people say that they aren't breaking as much as when they first came out. I haven't bothered trying them again because I personally have no use for them within my collection.

    For pure fun and brightness, I love the Derwent Chromaflow pencils. They are great for sketchbook work and things you're going to scan and sell prints of. For commissioned work, I tend to favour the Lightfast, with the Luminance for skintones.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I tried the Chromaflow when they first came out, and the ones I had broke like crazy, I was so disappointed. Plus, at that time, they hadn't released any lightfast ratings yet. I ended up giving them to my niece. I love the Lightfast pencils! They are definitely a go-to for me with work I sell! I'm still getting into the Luminance more, even though I have had them for years.
