      To me one of the most memorable moments was when you traveled to the past to save the bird that died in the volcano. All the time-travelling tornado segments were awesome and were full with references to mythology and literature (remember the red slippers?). This is a beautiful little game and it is a shame that so few people know about it. Great video, keep it up!

    This is one of my favorite games of all time. Most memorable moment - without spoiling the story - is a boss that is 'easy' to beat and who talks to you afterwards. Her message is... well I was ten when I first played this game, and I still think about what that character said.

      Soleil, Story of Thor, PS4, Shining Force 1 and 2... there were great RPGs in there, just... not as many or as high profile as in the SNES. On purpose, I think. The Mega Drive was the fast CPU console and all about the arcade ports, the slower RPGs benefitted the higher color depth and clever visual tricks the SNES had, so it was a bad thing to emphasize for the brand.

  • @8bitsnkboy472
    @8bitsnkboy472 Před 2 lety +17

    Being a big Zelda fan back in the day, I borrowed this game from a friend (along with his megadrive) in '95, although here in the UK it was called Soleil (which is the french word for the sun). Anyway, the most memorable moment was being able to speak to a flower for the first time!! That was wierd to say the least.
    I was originally disappointed in the way the game differed from a Link to the Past, but that's it's strength. But enough is familiar to appeal to fans of that games and the story has a some interesting themes, examining what makes a monster.
    Bottom line is, this game is so good that it was the first game I sought out after eventually picking up a megadrive of my own a few years ago.

    • @robertskitch
      @robertskitch Před 10 měsíci +1

      Besides sun I believe that soleil is also another name for sunflower, which I'm guessing, considering that every other place in the game except for the Tower of Babel area is named after flowers, is probably what the devs were going for.

    • @8bitsnkboy472
      @8bitsnkboy472 Před 10 měsíci

      @@robertskitch hmmm, you know that does make a lot of sense when you think about it... well, apart from the french word for sunflower being tournesoleil (or more commonly tournesol). Definitely something to think about, regardless.🤔

    • @robertskitch
      @robertskitch Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@8bitsnkboy472 Yeah, that's why I said it's 'another name' for sunflower. It's not the common name.
      I would have said that the devs were using the word primarily for the sun meaning too, except for the fact that they're pretty consistent with the flower naming scheme:
      Rafflesia Training School; Dahlia Valley; Anemone Coast; Hot Daisy; Burn Daisy; Iris Region; Camellia Desert; Castle of Freesia; Root Temple... Well, Root Temple isn't flower-themed, but it's still plant-themed.
      Also, it's not listed on the map but all the animal villages are named Lily: Water Lily (Anemone Coast); Medium Lily (Iris Region); and Small Lily (Camellia Desert); and in the manual the strange forest with the slimes and spellcasters is called Magic Rose.
      So yeah, about a dozen or so places/place names that *all* fit with the flower/plant theme. At this point I think it would be a bit odd if the town of Soleil wasn't named for the flower.
      We should bear in mind that the devs are Japanese, so even if it might be an uncommon use for the word in French that might not actually mean anything to them.
      I am guessing the devs probably did know that soleil meant *both* sunflower and sun and might have decided to use it *because* of the double meaning. Kind of like how 'anemone' is a flower name but 'Anemone Coast' is probably also a reference to sea anemones.🤷‍♂
      Sorry for the long post. 😅

    One of the best games I have ever played. The story is really engaging as it goes on and on. The characters (especially the animals) are really intriguing and charming. And to top it all off, the music is fantastic and is up there as one of the best soundtracks for a SEGA Genesis game in my opinion. I’m extremely thankful to own a complete in box copy of this rare gem. The cover art for the American version was also really cool with the long sword and the dark sky background. Definitely one of the Genesis’s best.

    The kart racing is legitimately fun. I had this upon release. This was probably the first or second cardboard boxed Genesis game I ever had. I bought this because I was so jealous of the SNES with Zelda, but all I had was a Sega. The Genesis game Addams Family Values is another Zelda styled top down game I had to have to fill that gap. I still haven't beat Beyond Oasis.

    Most memorable moment was facing the dragon with the sword and shield. Really enjoyed that fight.
    I saw my older brother play it first. He actually had to start over since he glitched the game in the ice castle. He somehow didn't go down into the water level after, went on to the tower and made it to the top but the catipiller never left the team to become a butterfly so when he did the tower and came back down he was stuck since you needed the power of the butterfly to escape.

    Sega of America had no expectations for this game to sell. It was passed up by them and it had to be published by Atlus.
    This game was part of the Sega of Japan's "Mega RPG Project". SOJ tried to appeal more to Japanese gamers after catering to the West for the majority of the consoles lifespan.
    Because of SOJ's push for more RPG's from mid 94' to early 95' Sega got numerous high quality action adventure games. Monster World IV, Popful Mail, Crusader of Centy, Beyond Oasis and Light Crusader. Beyond Oasis being the best action adventure of the 16-bit era. The Genesis almost got Shining Wisdom aswell but SOJ moved it to the Saturn during development.
    Sega also published a combined five JRPG's/SRPG's with SOJ's "Mega RPG Project" to me those genre's are unplayable so I don't know how good those games are.

      Story of Thor is such an amazing game. I had not played a Zelda game at that point (had a computer through the 8 bit era and a Mega Drive on the 16 bit gen), so it was a revelation to me. But even now, having played all the 2D Zeldas SoT is one of the best Zelda-likes ever. From the music to the clean, anime visuals, the hard push to fighting game-like combat mechanics that actually work and the clever use of the summons, it's great. At the time it was dinged for being a bit too handholdy and a bit short, but if anything those things make it hold up better. Better than Soleil, IMO. Better than LTTP, in fact.
      Yeah, I said it.

      It's not about "quality" per se, but the characteristics of a cutesy art style and pastel colors. The Genesis could do this style well, as demonstrated by games like this one, as well as Super Fantasy Zone, Magical Taruruto, Monster World series, Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Sonic 2 and a number others, but since the system was marketed towards a teen market, a lot of devs tried to use more subdued colors for a less cartoony style. Of course, a lot Western devs took this trend too far and in their attempt at "gritty realism", made some really drab-looking games with copious amounts of dithering. In fact, I'd argue that the Genesis palette was a lot more better suited for cartoony than "realistic" which went against its "more mature games" marketing push. I'd also argue that the SNES (without helper chips) would have a lot of difficulty running some of the more-impressive areas in this game, as well as many other late-period Genesis games, at a decent frame rate and without sprite flicker.

    Crusader of Centy is one of those strange games you hunt down because you remember on some odd RPGamer website a cameo from a certain blue hedgehog, and distinctly looking like Zelda, but you just can't remember the title. As such, said person would discover Beyond Oasis first, since it had better press for some reason, despite it not being Crusader of Centy.
    That being said, Crusader of Centy is a game I like, and one that does the best it can with the system while attempting to one-up the Zelda formula. Pretty good stuff.

    At the end there, just say "Emulation". We're all thinking it. A vast amount of people emulate games, no game should have a $500+ barrier to entry. Don't treat it like a dirty word. If you want to play a rare retro game (or just any retro game), just use emulation. You're fine.
    Good video all the same.

    For me, the Genesis and SNES didn't compete. I got a Genesis when it released as a NES replacement. When the SNES released, I waited and got one about 2-3 years in as a Genesis replacement, as I had discovered (via the Phantasy Star games) that I prefer RPGs over all other console genres.
    I sadly missed Crusader of Centy. I wish it was available on Steam for cheap like so many other Genesis games are.

    I bought a retron 5 so I could play super famicon and famicon games that have english patches. Because some games like this one are too expensive to buy. I got a boxed version on famicon and the artwork is very nice and so is the game.

      @Dean Satan Got that right. Y's story was superb compared to Zelda. You didn't need much story back then in most cases but it certainly helps.
      I've found over the many decades of gaming that Nintendo refuses to grow up with their gamers. They stay barely ten years old and thumb their noses at those of us that made them who they are today.

      I've been playing games for about 40 years and they really aren't getting better. They are simple, thoughtless and vapid. Games of a couple/few decades ago were absolutely not the "cellphone" crap that is pushed today as "gaming".

    My house got robbed in the mid 90s and my shiny new PlayStation was stolen. While I was waiting for the insurance company to replace it, I was forced to step back to 16bit gaming. That's when I discovered this game. It was so good I barely missed the PlayStation. I think it's better than Link to the Past!

    It is one of the best and I am sure the guy who made undertale had played it as there are similar themes later in that game. Your footage appears choppy in some scenes here, the actual game runs super smooth on real hardware.

    Zelda and this clone (w/differences) are not RPGs, they are action/adventures with a bit of RPG elements.
    Example Tecmo Bowl and Madden are not a Football RPGs, they are Football games with a bit of RPG elements.

      Phantasy Star IV is great, in fact I love the entire pre-MMO Phantasy Star line and wish Sega would revive the turn-based Phantasy Stars but while Sega can easily be argued to have a better average quality they were so much rarer that the overall quality on the SNES was better because it had more highs along with its lows. And too much of the PC engine and PC Engine CD inventory that I recall was Japan only. I loved the first Legend of Heroes game for example but we never got the sequel and while I keep hoping the pre-Trails Legend of Heroes games will be re-released there's no sign of it happening yet.
