This is so in line with my process lately. I recently have been recording things at a lower speed to make it more lofi then bouncing the mix back onto a type 2 on a different machine at the higher speed and keeping the magic going elsewhere. Tons of little weird things you can do to change sound with these machines. Cant wait to try a lower speed and a type 1 for my next drum sound then up convert during bouncing process
thanks for sharing your process! That's definitely a cool way to get some serious vibe, slow speeds. I have an Uher and my favorite setting is 15/16 IPS
This channel is an absolute gem. I'm thinking about introducing some "analogue inefficiency" to my music creation process (I'm old enough to feel nostalgia for cassette tapes) but for some reason 4-track and 8-track recorders are near impossible to find in my country. However, there are plenty of tape decks on the used market, many of them with line inputs.
Now, this will definitely be a lot more tedious than using a 4-track, but I'm thinking about either
1) Recording my parts (drum machine/guitar/synth) to tape deck and then feeding them back to the DAW before the final mix/master.
2) Feeding the mix to tape and back to DAW before master.
I'll probably go with the first approach, because while less efficient (fortunately, I don't create 50+ track monster arrangements, but I'll still have to run like 4-12 tracks through tape for each song) it gives me more leeway in the mixing stage (which I'm less confident about).
Any thoughts about using a comparatively "inefficient" tape deck instead of the Porta Two for hybrid DAW/Tape setup? Perhaps there's a video idea in it :) ? I know that in the US, home recording was pretty big in the 80s and 90s, so there are still plenty of 4-tracks lying around, but in some countries, that's not the case. Plus, a tape deck has a lower barrier to entry (I'd imagine even in the US 4-tracks are starting to get more expensive as people start to value them again), so picking one up for cheap and showing how it could be used in a music production process, could be a cool idea.

I have been recommending this for years. Type 1 are not terrible as you know/found out... i love using type 1 for texture and distortion as well as creating tape loops. Then can sample those and add them to a better type tape later to get some even more lofi vibes centered around the higher fidelity type ii or iv. I like using drums and lush synths on the type 1’s and bass and low end or Ill add drum overdubs to the type ii to get better highs. Fun stuff! Great video as always! Cheers
Brilliant! The way your rhythm section on normal tape sounds creates such fantastic space in the mix for those guitars and reverbs! It reminds me of a video I saw once of Noah "40" Shebib, Drake's primary producer for years. He said that he recorded most of the rhytm and backing parts in his productions using a lower sample rate to create space in the mix for Drake's voice. Really effective technique and pulling it off on a portastudio is really clever.

thanks! different tape with a portastudio is especially apparent because you have no ability to adjust the bias. Sometimes I can't believe how esoteric it's becoming for me lol

This video brings back good memories. All my early 1980's songwriting was on Tascam Cassette recorders. So happy to see you utilizing yours so beautifully. I never liked the cassette 2 tapes. Heavy and bright. My cassette 1 recording were always sounding lo-fi
and more true to what I heard when I pressed record.

Lovely video, as always. But I just wanted to let you know, that on the Roland Jazz Chorus, one of the speakers is the dry sound, and the other speaker is the chorused sound. You get the over all effect by hearing both speakers. So if you're only mic'ing one speaker, then you'll either get just the clean sound, or just the wavy chorused sound. You won't capture the whole chorus efffect unless you mic both speakers, or at least pick up both of them by having one mic between them both (at whatever distance works). I don't know if it's the same on the model of Jazz Chorus amp that you're using, but it was certainly that way on the old JC120 that I had in the 90s. OK, continue. :)

@@MadeOnTape I love seeing people using old tech for audio. I have some vintage keyboards and drum machines, but have avoided getting back into tape. But I was crazy enough to fix up a vintage Sony MCI MXP-3036 recording console, and document it on my channel.
I always dreamed of having a 4-track when I started music, then digital started coming in before I could afford it. I live vicariously thru this video

I recently went back to archive some Portastudio stuff I recorded in the 90's, and was shocked to see I was using mostly type 1's! And not for effect. As kids, we just used whatever we had. And it sounded surprisingly decent, all things considered.

The new type 2 is garbage but I can't even get it in the UK. But I am using type 1 for various voice stuff. Lots of fun. I loved the music on this and your enthusiasm for using tape and analog is great

What do you use to clean the Tascam tape heads? Please ? Thank you . Mine is hardly used but would love to start using it again! 🎸🍄👍
just 91% isopropyl alcohol (the pure stuff) and cue tips. Make sure you clean everything on the tape path and not just the heads...i'm the worst at cleaning, so I'm not sure if you can use isopropyl on rubber. check out the TapeHeads forum!

Great video, as always! I was just wondering: does it make sense to record on a Type I cassette first because of it's better bass end; etc, to then send it back from the DAW onto an Type II cassette. Wouldn't it still lose all it's bass end as well then? Cheers
great question! think of the DAW as a perfect copy/representation of what it receives. It definitely captured all the vibe and sent it into the type 1.
sometimes i do an external bounce onto the reels or a vcr, but for creativity sometimes it’s just quicker to use the DAW

Thanks for answering my question. :) I myself started "multitracking" on two 90's boombox radios, sending what I'd previously recorded on radio 1 to radio 2 via a little Boss 4 channel mixer. After a couple of overdubs, it'd sound sooo muddy and "useless" really, but I did enjoy the fact it's possible for me as a little kid to do some overdubs, haha. Got a 4 track Fostex cassette portastudio after that and for years now, I've owned a "Pro" Tools HD system for my main work, but I got interested in recording on an old "trusty" 4-track portastudio again since I listened to some of Dream Machine's stuff. Ever heard of them? Also Springsteen's Nebraka album sounds hauntingly good to me, so I'm planning on writing 10 (or so) songs, record it onto my Tascam 424, mix it in Tools but with the tracks going through my external compressors/ spring reverb; etc, back ontoa 2-track cassette device, or maybe a reel to treel. We'll see. :)

Would you be open to making a video or reply here on bouncing individual tracks from the tape into a DAW and the timing issue that comes with that because of tape stretch? I've been using the Warp function in Ableton to drag and align things as each track from tape gets off time from each other as they're being recored into Ableton. My brother mentioned it may be more of a latency issue but everything I've read online seems to agree with the fact that tape stretches little by little with each playback so when you're putting it into the DAW you'll run into timing issues
I ask/say all that because I'm trying to avoid the ping-pong method so that I can have each track completely individual. Thinking I may just need to record digital and then run through tape at the very end of things
edit: for note i'm just running straight from Tascam MKIII into Audient ID4 interface into Abelton
with tape, i like to suggest that you should either commit to it from the beginning, or use it at the end. It's true, tape stretches, especially with moderate machines (i'm sure the highest-end machines were closer to perfect, but I actually don't know)
have you considered external bouncing? This will preserve your tracks, but they still won't "line up" if you have to go back to them.
Consider: you fill up a four track cassette. Using tape outs, bounce the four tracks into your DAW (you have to have 4 inputs in your interface). Now mix these and bring back into cassette as a stereo "submix". Add two more tracks, rinse and repeat.
I know that's not a solution to your scenario. Part of the fun of these is the limitations in amount of tracks. in a modern DAW setup, it's easy to add layers and layers, but with four tracks of tape, you have to submix and commit.
All that to also say: you could record digitally and bring those into tape-land when you have all your parts, too. Even then, you'll be submixing or mixing down to two tracks.
I should make a video about this because I don't feel I covered it very well here, and the visual aids would be more helpful. thanks for the question!
