      Maybe so, but it doesn't have to be. There are ways to move forward and develop a new self that has a better ability to let go of these things that weigh us down. Don't ever give up! We all can find small ways to continue to grow and become better ^_^

      Arm knee, ceiling window, writing cutlery... they still get the point across. The real problem is if you forget a word, and *can't find an alternative* word or phrase - and you stand there with your mouth open, looking like a complete idiot.

    I didn't know about the anxiety/depression link. I noticed that sometimes my memory recall was worse when my calcium was low (hypocalcemia from hypoparathyroidism) but i also developed a lot of anxiety after my thyroid surgery. I asked my endocrinologist if low calcium could cause both anxiety and memory recall and she was like "yeah it's possible, just take your calcium!" 🤷‍♀️

    having dealt with clinical anxiety my whole life, and also being highly self-aware about it, in extra stressful times like this i can still objectively remember long-past events but the extremely difficult thing is FEELING like they actually happened. i've had like a constant identity crisis for the past several months because i'm unable to emotionally remember almost anything about my life and honestly this video being posted right now was a really convenient reminder that i'm not suddenly a whole different person but that it's just the stress.

      I think you've hit the nail right on the head with that comment - it's not the factual memory, but the emotional and sensory aspects of the memory. Without those, they just don't feel real. I have the problem all the time of knowing something happened, but not being able to convince myself of it in a tangible way. It's more like it happened to someone else rather than me. At its worst, I don't feel like I exist when other people aren't there.

    • @NeoLithiumCat

    Just going to suggest that there might be a moment to acknowledge the fact that are huge populations of people who have been struggling with relentless chronic economic deprivation and anxiety in the U.S. (and, under far worse conditions throughout the rest of the world) for decades; and the impact that has had on the lives of millions of people.
    Not everyone was comfortable enough to enjoy the many privileges that come with not constantly worrying about the imminent possibility of homelessness, the anxiety surrounding wondering if you'll be able to pay for food, surviving violent home environments and neighborhoods, navigating predatory systems of structural violence with few, if any, resources. Struggling with a lack of medical care ...
    Getting back to "normal" may be the answer for certain groups of comfortable folks, but for far too many people, corrosively chronic stressors are built-in to every day of their lives. As is often the case, where one stands is often determined by where one sits at the table.

I just deleted all my social media apps (except CZcams, obviously) and shopping apps, because I don't want to spend so much time glued to my phone, and also, all the hatred spreading in social media was getting to me. Now you talked about memory issues could be related to stress, and over focusing in bad stuff, it made me think about how my memory problems could be related to that.

      Sometimes I just turn things off and sit in silence, especially when driving, it can help me get ready for a long day at work or help me sort stuff out on the way home. My uncle sometimes would drive with the radio off when I was a kid, I thought it was kind of weird, but now I know why he did it, I think. Too much noise in the world sometimes. Sometimes I need noise while I do stuff or it drives me nuts, and will load a podcast and turn it down low for background noise. It all really depends on how I feel how much noise I want.

My memory is only just starting to improve thanks to an intensive group therapy program I'm doing, but there's still a lot of gaps, including what seems like a total block on happy childhood memories - only able to recall the bad, unless reminded by family of this or that event. I am a Canadian, so not involved in the upcoming US election, though likely will still be impacted by it. So, out of curiosity I followed the 'how to vote link'. I am glad that I did. The information there is FANTASTIC! Thank you for doing this and for letting people know about this. I have friends with US citizenship and will be forwarding the link to them.
    At first, I thought 'how to vote' meant 'who we think you should vote for' (which made me have a feeling of trepidation). But NO. It is 'you need this type of ID, here are the hours for the polling stations, etc.' There is also information about how to be media savvy when deciding votes, etc., etc. A lot of thoughtful, informative information and no one telling people who they should vote for - just background on how to make an informed decision and how to actually cast your ballot.
    I hope that Canadians do something like this before our next election. I suspect it will be a bit of a gentler one than the US is heading to, but for really helping people participate in a democracy, no matter the context, is a wonderful idea.

    I have a particularly annoying case of doorway senility in that I forget what I was thinking immediately upon walking through a doorway. As long as I walk through no doorways, I can remember all the stuff I was getting up to do and what I was thinking, but walking through a doorway just has such a powerful effect on my mindset that I might as well be senile. It's even worse if I've walking through a doorway and gone up stairs because of course the degree of effort you've done to go and do something is directly proportional to the likelihood that you will forget what you were going to do when you get to wherever you might have intended to go.
    When I was forced to move back in with my mom, I thought I was also going senile and not just broke. It turns out that there really weren't many doorways in my apartment but there are tons of them in the house, plus stairs. I'm sure some of it had to do with stress too but I had noticed the doorway phenomenon in my apartment with the bathroom and bedroom doors so I obviously also have a general propensity to forget things just because of the effect of doorway senility. lol

    I'm constantly forgetting things, like where I put something. My memory was never that great - even as a kid, I could never find things I was looking for, I couldn't remember where I'd left them five minutes ago. And I've had a lot of stress for the past few *years...* But covid sure hasn't helped.
    Not long ago I had some paperwork I was going to need; I got it all together - then forgot where I put it. I looked everywhere for it: I dug through my purse, I searched every drawer and cabinet I could possibly have put it, drawers I thought I'd never have put it, searched through my purse and drawers again, searched AGAIN...!! I finally gave up, and got replacement copies.
    Then I had some errands to run a couple few days later, including some other things to mail. I sorted some envelopes and stuff already in my purse, took out what I didn't need in *there* anymore, and left it on a table to be put away later, and did my errands.
    When I got home, I looked through that stuff on the table, to file it away... *_and there was the paperwork I had lost and searched so hard for,_* in with it !! After I had been through *every scrap* in my purse, three times.
    How did I *NOT* see it, three times ??
    I am now convinced, I'm not just losing my memory....

    Can you explain how some medications can affect your memory, and the difference between situational memory loss (ie stress and depression) and something like Alzheimer's or dementia?

    • @JoseRojas-hl7sn
      @JoseRojas-hl7sn Před 3 lety +1

      Well, Alzheimer is not about memory loss, is about problems with connection of neurons, specially the desintegration of the microtubules. The disconection between neurons causes not only memory problems but also malfunction of may vital processes. Memory loss by stress is caused by by a low ability to store information, not a bad conection. Memory loss by dementia can be caused by many things as dementia is any tipe of brain disease that is characterized by being more common as you age, by getting more severe with time (degenerative), by making you forget things and by changing your usual conducts. I am not sure about the medication thing, but I know some chemicals can change your brain activity by making it stronger (estimulant) or weaker (depressive). A very well known and used depressive chemical is etanol (alcohol in drinks) and a very well known estimulant is caffeine. So both make a change in short term memory, but I am not sure about the change that they make in long term memory. Well, hope that helps
      Edit.: Ph I forgot to say that cortisol (stress hormone) is a stimulant

      not an expert but i'll give you my 2 cents regarding memory. i think of it like this: let's use "door" as an example. Alzheimer's is forgetting the word "door", but you remember what a door does. Dementia is when you forget what a door is designed for, what's it's purpose. i think experts say that dementia is an umbrella term and Alzheimer's is a form of dementia, but those are the 2 kinds of memory loss i'm familiar with.
      i don't know much about medication related memory loss but i live with ptsd and all my symptoms point to serotonin, dopamine and melatonin imbalance. due to this, altho my sleeping schedule is great, i often experience weird αrsε sleeping conditions such as sleep paralysis, spasms, etc. my sleep gets disrupted and the brain doesn't get the chance to store info properly. that's how i experience long term memory loss. another reason i forget things is because my brain sometimes chooses to not really be where I'm at. if i'm feeling uncomfortable where i am at, fight or flight mode kicks in, and even tho I'm seemingly calm, i do not store much info from that situation. that's where my short term memory loss usually comes from.
      i would be interested in learning what kind of memory loss medications can cause but if we're talking about antidepressants or stress/anxiety medication, i suspect it's a chicken-egg dilemma.

    Inducing constant high stress is also a manipulation tactic used by some people to get what they want from you. Best way to handle both is to find some way to actively relax, passive relaxation like lounging around often encourages more stress due to the lack of productivity. Relaxing by being committed to an activity is better as it works on problem solving skills in a low risk situation. As long as the activity is encouraging to do while also Finite in time limit it tricks you into actually relaxing as you've "solved the problem" or "made headway" making it easier to pass mental blocks that would otherwise restrict your ability to identify (and thus solve) more ambitious problems.

    I know this is a very common complaint, but it's so stupid that these things are not taught at lower levels of schools in many places of the world. In many countries mental health issues are stigmatized and there are all sorts of crazy or superstitious explanations that get used which prevents important treatment of these problems. How hard is to hire some damn semi competent education directors or whatever and make some translated books on general psychology as part of the school syllabus? How are people supposed to break out of unhelpful superstitions if the best explanations we have to some of the most important phenomena are not given at a general level? I mean education is bad in many developed places but there is some serious underdevelopment in many countries. I feel like these things should be taught even before high school.

    • @trinomial-nomenclature
      @trinomial-nomenclature Před 3 lety +3

      I completely agree! The country I live in is trying quite hard to bring awareness to mental health conditions. At my son's school (he's in elementary) they have "Mental Health Week" (or Day, sorry can't remember), however at his level it's more so about not judging or bullying (making fun of) someone with a mental health condition. However, they don't talk about any of the conditions, maybe they think the children won't understand, but they could at least touch on depression and anxiety.
      It seems as though most people will grow up to be diagnosed with a mental health condition, if not in childhood. I feel as though teaching the children at a young age, may help them to recognize and understand better, if they exhibit symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc., conditions may children are diagnosed with these days and may help them realize they need help and are comfortable asking and talking about it because it wasn't stigmatized in school.
      With the "Mental Health Week" (or Day) we have here, it only leaves my child with more questions. However, he does come to me and asks " what does Mental Health issues mean?" (he's quite young), so I explained it appropriate for his age and as he's gotten a bit older, we talk about it quite often as his best friend has ADHD and ODD, along with severe anxiety and his cousin has ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome. Also, my son has quite a bit of anxiety and has recently started developing panic attacks (very mild though), so we're constantly talking and learning about it and how to handle it.
      So, I think the schools are heading in the right direction, but maybe should explain things a bit more.

    Memory issues are also caused by simple things that create boundaries from one moment to the next. Things like walking through a door, for example. These are cues for your brain to archive accumulated memories to make room for more.
