- Welcome to my blind playthrough of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice! So many of you asked me to play through it, and I'm glad you did even though it makes me feel so anxious because it's a crazy interesting and artsy game.
I'm playing Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice in prep for Senua's Saga: Hellblade II which releases on May 21, 2024.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a 2017 action-adventure game developed and published by Ninja Theory. Set in a dark fantasy world inspired by Norse mythology and Celtic culture, the game follows Senua, a Pict warrior who must make her way to Helheim by defeating otherworldly entities and facing their challenges, in order to rescue the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela.

This game is so impactful and gets right under your skin. Devs did so well. Great job toughing it out, Java!
I'm glad you're enjoying it even though it's anxiety inducing 😊
They did TOO good a job 😂😭
This game is really meant to be played with headphones, so if your anxious good luck with headphones on ;)
God they’ve done SUCH a good job with it, I was sincerely so anxious playing it
Did not expect this. Thanks for the upload.
Have fun Java! This is one of the scariest games I've played. Also a fantastic game overall.
It’s the most anxiety inducing game I’ve played in a way I struggle to describe
God I just realized how well the opening inner monologue(s?) tie into the ending. Devastatingly good.
"There will be no more stories after this" ~~ LITERAL CHILLS ~~
I’m excited to have this realisation
This game will always have a special place I my heart
This game is so amazing!
Knowing you through your streaming personality, the ending will absolutely DESTROY you😭😭
Probably would be more effective if she didn't expect it ahead of time!
@@coreyhughes1456 Agreed. Garnering expectations is almost as bad as straight spoilering things. I wish people could just keep their little quips to themselves.
Oh GOD I’m not ready 😭😭😭
Great that I get to watch you play this just before the sequel comes out. Playing this was an exhilarating experience. One of the most impactful endings ever in a video game imo.
Even though I love watching people play this game for the first time. But this does confirm more why I dislike People playing with live chat. They spend so much time tryna talk to chat. That the gameplay slightly suffers. Miss everything they tell you to help. But you miss it for being way to involve with chat.
You are going to love the shit out of this game.
It's not a horror game. Its disturbing and memorable. Still one of my favorite games. Hope you find it a worthwhile play through!
I definitely am! It’s an incredibly unique game
Loved this game back when it first came out. Just finished Hellblade 2 as well. Its worth a playthrough as well if you have a PC or Xbox.
I'm SO excited for hellblade 2 🎉🎉
I completed this one few days ago and I loved it! I can't wait for the sequel to be released in the next 2 hours (since the time of this comment)!
Edit: the sequel is amazing!
did you finish it???
@@itsjavachip Not yet. The story, the graphics, the sound effects... it's truly a masterpiece and I wish It doesn't have an end! I am trying to get all secrets and prolong the gameplay. 😁
Yeah, it does have that effect hahahaha
1:21:33 This was such a sick combo, I'm sure you meant to do that!
OMG ICON
I feel the game is 100% more immersive WITHOUT subtitles. The voices are more impactful if you cant understand or mishear some.
Iiiiinteresting, I honestly hadn’t considered that
But I mean you also get the FULL story if you have the subtitles on and therefore can catch ALL of the dialogue that the voices are saying because they do whisper shit sometimes or the effects on the voices make it hard to understand what their saying ... The Shadow specifically because there is quite a distortion to that voice in the game... But you get all of the dialogue that the subtitles want you to hear that's vital... Because they don't track every single thing senuas fury's say... But they track the important stuff. Also subtitles helps widen the audience who can watch it because people who are hard of hearing can also watch your video if you have subtitles on.
And I mean especially since she's so anxious playing the game she doesn't NEED to be even more immersed. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Oh interesting! Enjoy the game Java 🎮
I mean you can change the button layout.
in regards to that one person in chat, dont know if hellblade and alan wake are comparable past the fact they are both psychological tbh.
I mean that was the exact comparison he made between the two. I think it was intended to put her mind at ease, to show that she'd played a game maybe with similar styles.
Hi javaaaa
As much as I've enjoyed Java's previous playthroughs, this was genuinely unpleasant to watch.
I’m sorry to hear that, don’t want to let people down. I think the game is incredible, it just made me feel so anxious (which is intended and I’m so appreciative of that from an art standpoint). I’m enjoying my experience playing but can understand how this can be unpleasant for you or others
I think this game just benefits from your full attention more so than other games, it's probably not the best one to play while streaming.
I can see that! I’ve not finished it yet, so I’ll be more cognisant of that in my next playing session
@@itsjavachip Don't stress about it, as a streamer you have to interact with your audience. That was actually intended more as an observation directed at OP than a criticism or suggestion directed at you! I just hope you enjoy the game and its unique story!
I am somebody who's lived with psychosis and hallucinations both auditory and visual my whole life. Without spoilers I wanna explain the concept of the game so you can easily get into the correct headspace when you play the sequel or just reflect on this ones meaning. the game isn't meant to be taken in for what you see. It's made so that you adopt the thought processes of people with the mental illness. Even though the game seems very fantasy and fictional, but the developers never strayed from anything grounded in realism that many people like me have seen and been through and I'll explain how.
At the beginning of the game when she gets to Hel, Dillions head starts to breathe in the sack. which goes to show that upon reaching the territory of resurrection, Dillion taking breaths represents him living on in Senua's mind. he lives vicariously through her. The head isn't actually breathing its her perceiving it that way as motivation to uphold his memory.
The rot that grows on Senua's arm is actually a real life thing people experience. I've had hallucinations before of parts of my body withering away or dying, and usually these form based off of lack of a sense of worth and self preservation. Senua feels hopeless and worthless so it's her mind conveying her desire to dissipate into nothing. That's why each time you "die" or "fail" in the game the rot grows stronger. Not because Hela is smiting her, but because she's feeling stuck in an endless cycle of mental incompetence. She feels trapped in a cycle of defeat and needs a change in perspective to be victorious. and so the "permadeath" is her having to restart her process of recovery and grief.
Also it growing further up you arm relates to the worth point too. Each time she overcomes an aspect of grief she feels guilty that she's accepting Dillions death
Most of the doors with runes in the game aren't actually locked. From my experience I've had times where before proceeding with something within my own life I've had to solve a problem by referencing symbols or ideas from my past to justify moving forward in a certain state of mind. There's also been times when i've either been dreaming or had a hallucination that changed my surroundings, where I had to speak to certain people or find "ways out" through items in the dreams to wake up and snap out of it. There isn't actually runes locking the path to Helheim. Senua just simply must get into specific states of mind to justify upholding the mission, and it could sprout from anxiety, fear, hatred, or fond memories, but those runes may have meanings that helps her justify proceeding that she connects the dots with. The easiest most common minded explanation is something like angel numbers. Yeah they may just seem like numbers, but to certain people they feel like the universe is speaking directly to them as if in code.
(and honestly i recommend looking the runes up occasionally because it tells you how she feels about certain scenarios or what may come like fortunes)
In line with some of that I've also had times where character i have hallucinated represented repressed parts of myself. For example I have this one spirit I see occasionally that speaks in introspective monologues of my own perception of myself. much like the narration voices and the other ones that are more occasional. Whenever i can't put who i am into words he can.. which gives me solid ground and a sense of solidarity of who I am. she has similar experiences. One of the most important steps to overcoming grief is to accept what hurts you the most about it. I won't say how and give spoilers, but every character you meet in the game is actually a representation of each aspect of Senua's personality and what she needs to overcome. In therapy they teach you about things called "delusions" and "obstruction Principles" which basically is when the mind gets too overwhelmed with emotion, trauma, and information, your brain fabricates ideas, people, and settings that better help you make sense of hard thinking patterns. and for her a lot of the time it's self destructive tendencies, a doomed mentality, feeling like an outcast and a lot more. So be on the lookout!!
The scene with her looking in her mirror at 3:25:36 is great representation of that last point. The deep disembodied voice is the self talk she's learned from how other people have treated her. It's her own hatred that she thinks about herself personified to save herself from the guilt
Also finally people who experience psychosis have tendencies to form amnesia based off of PTSD or other bits of info that can be too much to comprehend, and a lot of the puzzles in this game take place within those moments. Typically when I've encountered them my environments "Fade to black" or seems very void-like. In situations like this the only way i've ever been able to solve them is to rely on a feeling or symbolism to guide me instead of reality and what i see itself. So when these portions come up don't resort to logic, think in terms of how the mind works.
Its definitely a lot to take in. The story is outstanding so i'm excited to see you play more. I hope you see this and use it to understand the plot better than most people. On your videos of the sequel ill give pointers too
It's a shame people can't handle intense games like this, learn to step out of your comfort zone and play something bold once in a while Jesus. We need more games like this but you seem more concerned with how uncomfortable it makes you feel rather than appreciating it for what it is. It is stressful to play but that is why the game is amazing, it makes you FEEL something. People are too damn sensitive.
Couldn'tve put it better myself.👍
I genuinely do appreciate it, I think I said that multiple times? I love playing artsy games, it gives me a lot of the same feeling I had playing Alan Wake 2. They’ve done an incredibly artistic job of capturing a feeling that’s hard to explain
Geez, chill bro
She is far too kind because I would just tell you to fck off lol what an overbearing comment
Some people have lived much harder lives than you have, or are born with different ways of perceiving the world. Someone who is already predisposed to being nervous or feeling panic, pain, etc a doesn’t Need a game like this to “make them feel something.” For them, something soothing or simple would be what they need or want. For me, many intense experiences in media are cathartic but for another person that same experience is just painful, not cathartic, not worth it. Get over yourself. Everyone is different. Count yourself fortunate you can enjoy difficult media without actual repercussions.
Gameplay sucks. I don’t want to constantly look for figures over and over again. I just don’t care about it. Don’t see the big deal.
why all streamers/youtubers play same game at the same time? :)
I dont speak about new games.
I am speak about older games. (not, u fallout).
Or publisher just spamed free copies as advertising campaign for second game? :)
The new game is coming out this month. Anyone who hasn't played the first one would be doing so now to get ready for the second game.
@@CHEESEpuff69 A fact which is painfully obvious.
@@lockekappa500 indeed
I didn’t get a free copy of the game from the publishers! I just had a lot of people tell me to play this and I know the second one is coming out
