Dustin pleading and begging for Eddie not to sacrifice himself is what makes this scene so emotional. Adding such a powerful song such as running up the hill makes it devastating.

Without Eddie distracting the Demobats would have invaded Hawkins, Eddie realized this and decided to act rather than run.
To further connect this to “Running Up That Hill”, he literally swapped places with the entire town of Hawkins, literally and metaphorically ran up the hill(death) to save everyone.

I still miss Eddie and want him to come back. I'll never forget how haunting Dustin's cries were the first couple of days after it happened. It hurt so badly. Eddie and Wayne did such a wonderful job in the show, they deserve more screen time.
I am hoping he comes back also. Without a funeral or a body there is always a chance he was still alive even just barely

I refuse to believe Netflix would waste such a prolific and incredible character on one season. I truly believe Eddie will live in the upside down, with Chrissy and all the others, even Barb… and maybe Will as a sort of dungeon master, as they all explore the upside down, this band of characters who get to experience a real life DND. With eleven living on with Mike, and hopper and Joyce and Jonathon.

While I understand the purpose of this edit there's good reason why this song wasn't used for this moment. In the show this song is constantly used to show triumph and victory. This is a noble sacrifice that Eddie makes hence the more emotional score we see in the show.
He broke the 4th wall. An icon. He became a sensation far beyond the show. True triumph of an amazing character.
His sacrifice is a triumph.

@@adamdean7008 This part. An unresolved plot point from season 2 was Dustin and Hopper breathing in the spores in the Upside down. Part of me thinks that's how Vecna knew what everyone was up to, sleeper agent style. Part of me thinks it will cause trauma visions, and similar to Billy in Max's visions, it will be Eddie in Dustin's.
