  • This is redneck ingenuity in its purist form. An old car frame, some tired iron, a few belts and pulleys and away we go.
Builder/operator unknown. This was captured at the Santa Fe Trail Tired Iron Show west of Larned Ks. Oct 11, 2008

Permission has been granted to NBC Comcast Entertainment Group to use the video 'Redneck GoCart' on the SYFY channel on the "Insane or Inspired" series begining Friday May 25th, 2012. This video is supposed to appear in 'Motorized Moments' on June 22nd, 2012.
Update: This did appear on SYFY's "Insane or Inspired" June 22nd, 2012. It came in as number 7 of the top 25 most outragous backyard creations.

    Updated information:
Builder -Stanley Phillips, built in the late 60ties. The car frame was a 50ties Ford, fished out of Lake Meredith that some one had wrecked. The large engine is a 1892 Fairbanks Morse 9 HP.
Stanley is deceased. Hats off to his son Martin for maintaining and showing this marvelous work of art. This has been and is still being displayed in parades and farm shows in the Kansas and Oklahoma areas. (Photo - Stanley's last ride with his son Martin.)
Interesting side note - The video aired on SYFY's "Insane or Inspired" on Stanley's birthday.

This guy came to the Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Show in Pawnee, OK a few years ago. I asked him about it, and as I recall he explained that it is a 1954 Ford car frame modifed to support an 1892(?) vertical 10-hp stationary engine. The pony motor used to start it is a John Deere 3-hp engine. Rather than mount the engine on a trailer, he decided it would be a more interesting way to display it if it could be moved around under it's own power.

Those are old field engines, very collectable. We had on in our barn when i was growing up but I never saw it run. People used these to take out in the field where there was no power. The engine would usualy have a thick leather belt around the pully and drive something like a water pump or small sawmill. They were also used in the oilfield a lot. Not sure I would use them on a car.
