  • When Bosch announced their new Compact Hammer Drill at World of Concrete - I thought it sounded kind of weak to be honest. I even forgot they announced it. But when I finally got my hands on it, I am kind of surprised at how much I like it! The GSB18V-800C really seems to be a nice step forward!

    My dad was in HVAC for 40 years and always ran Bosch cordless. It was the only brand he didn't have to replace on a yearly basis from wear and tear. That's given me an affinity for Bosch. I still predominantly run Milwaukee due to the depth of their lineup, but I do love the Bosch tools that I have. Their level of refinement is perhaps only bested by Makita.

      When I initially saw the announcement at world of concrete, I was honestly rather unimpressed and even when I ordered it, I don't think I was necessarily all that excited. I don't think I that I am ready to say it's absolutely the best drill in the segment, but you can really do a lot worse and there are almost no other tools that have all of the features this one has. The 565 in-lbs really doesn't sound like a ton but in this drill it seems to work quite well.

    I think the 800 makes total sense. In the past Bosch used that last sequence of the part number to designate torque. And an acquaintance who imports Bosch tools from Europe told me the International version GSB18V-90C was initially designed as 90Nm (translates to roughly 800 in-lbs) but once released they only claimed 64Nm or the 565 in-lbs here. He mentioned something about liabilities as that higher number would've needed an aux handle or something like that (don't quote me on that) but now that I see it side by side with the 975C which I own it makes total sense it was indeed 800 in-lbs but Bosch ended up underrating its numbers on paper.
    Same thing happened with their mid torque impact wrench GDS18V-330 which has such low numbers on paper (like the Dewalt DCF894 I owned a few years ago) but in practice it's torque numbers are up there with Milwaukee mid torque

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  Před 3 měsíci

      Interesting information. The model number through me as well because most of them really have been the torque figure. So perhaps it's a bit of a sleeper. Based on performance I really think that it's a bit of a leap from their previous more compact models.

    In easten Europe, where I am from - Bosch was the best known and sort of the most reputable power-tool brand for decades. The other brand was Makita, but Boshes were more available and widespread, as being european. Every builder, plumber, carpenter, serious DIY'er - knew and coveted those two brands.
    Well, Hilti as well - but they were very expensive and symomious only for huge electric demolition hammers (which everone just called Hilties, just like in the US people call vaccum cleaners - Hoovers). Only in the recent years Dewalt and Milawukee become available here.
    I never got on the Bosch 18V lineup when I started buying tools for myself, becouse 6-7 years ago - they really looked a bit underpowered and overall unimpressive, compared to others. But in the recent years they got out some rellay nice tolls, especially the BiTurbo line.
    Their 12V line is a different story - I felt in love with it with the first small 12V installation drill-drivers my dad bought some 15-20 years ago.

    I have a soft spot for Bosch tools as the first power tool I ever bought was a Bosch corded drill which still use today. My first cordless Bosch drill I got by accident when my wife confused the Bosch with Ryobi (the one I asked for when they still were dark blue in color) for my birthday present. I was going to return it as I thought I didn't need anything that "fancy" but once I tried it I was smitten and have bought many Bosch tools since.

    I also have Bosch and I agree with you 12:23 they make quality tools as far as durable and whatnot they always seem to be underpowered and thier marketing dept. is clownish. Nobody is on a jobsite bragging about thier "hitman" rotary hammer or thier "freak " impact which every version they've come out with has been a disappointment to me. Why release a new version that has less rpm and only 60in pds or so more torque? I digress, another excellent video sir, you are the best in my opinion on you tube you never let your ego get in the way and just give us what we want to see. @taylorshin Před 3 měsíci

    Inconsequently... This drill also is 800!! Just like DCD800 huh! But yeah, has hammer function!
    I always check up Bosch tools every RONA visit (Canadian Lowes equivalent) and they feel really good and well made. Mainly, their 'freak' impact driver looks really useful but I haven't encountered anything that really needs impact wrench. Having a 1/4" hex to 1/2" or 3/8" socket was enough for me. Even changing wheels on my car.
    But yeah, I'll try out the Freak and a drill comes with it someday.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  Před 3 měsíci

      The freak for me is a case of a really cool concept but something that just falls flat in the execution. The 1/2" square drive is outperformed by the 1/4" collet with an adapter typically and in my own videos, I just have it found it to be good enough either as an impact driver or an impact wrench to do away with having two dedicated tools. I really want to love it... but it's got to pack more power if it's going to be as big as is, in my opinion. Bosch really nails it with their drills it seems but I wish they would give us something similar in the impact market.

    When we get away from the spec sheet, as You say, ergonomics and ease of use, and the ‘sound’ of a tool have an impact on its use. From the sound I heard in your testing, the 800C sounded really good. The 2 bigger drills sounded Ok, but I have handled those in person, and didn't care for them? I have not seen the 800C in person.
    I will say, IMO, the ‘CORE’ line of batteries, and even the ones before, are some of the best in the industry!
    The 5 segment battery gauge is commendable, ( did you hear that DeWalt? ) and is useful.
    Bosch seems to struggle, but it is mostly their own doing; Poor Marketing, and failure to innovate and update their tool line. Of course Lowe’s doesn’t do them any favors. It seems they are slowly ‘trying’ to make Bosch go away? In my local store The Bosch section is almost ‘hidden’ away, back behind all the other brands. Anyhoo…. Take it easy, stay safe, and keep on keeping on!

You can probably change the shutter speed or change the lights to correct it. The video also shows as 24fps, assuming your using the ZV-10 that camera is dual frame rate (NTSC/PAL) so there is no true 24fps just a frame pull down of 30fps resulting in the 23.98. You are better off setting it for native NTSC mode.

      @glenarseneau1231 when you say the battery system is weak. Could you elaborate? Do you mean the batteries themselves are weak? Or is it that there aren't enough tools for you in the cordless platform?
      To me the performance of the batteries are right up there with the competition.
