  • Are you wondering if there is radon in your home? You can perform a simple test that takes 48 hours for around $200 to answer the question.
I recently sold my home and the purchaser performed a radon test. To my surprise the radon reading came in high at 5.5 pCi/L which is 1.5 pCi/L over the EPA standard of 4.0 pCi/L. (picoCuries / Liter) (I don't know if anyone really knows what that actually means). There are a lot of misconceptions about how radon affects a home. Many people think that it would be most prevalent in enclosed basements, but radon can actually be found at high levels as high as the 2nd or 3rd floor of a condo. So just because you have a walk out basement, or like me, have a glass wall of windows in the basement doesn't mean you don't have higher levels of radon.
In this video I talk with Brian Patti with All-Pro Services, an independently owned and operated firm founded in 1993 based out of Fairfax, Virginia. They specialize in home inspections and environmental testing, including radon gas, mold and lead testing. They do not remediate, mitigate or abate anything they find. All-Pro Services performed a retest in my home after a radon abatement system was installed and I was impressed by the knowledge that Brian had about radon and I know that a lot of people are in the dark about radon, which is the reason for this video.
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, colorless, odorless, radioactive gas, emitted from uranium within the earth's
soil. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall,
and the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Elevated radon levels have been measured in homes in every
state. According to the EPA, Radon is
responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.
There are 2 types of radon abatement systems, Active and Passive. I had an active system installed for around $1,000. From my experience, they usually cost between $900 - $1,600 depending on the amount of work that needs to be performed.
