Absolutely love this channel and would never have dreamed of learning what it offers. Without being nitpicky just want to point out 8 mins deep in the episode its doing the math for the mass of sucrose and the oxygen mass is wrong 11mol x 16.00g/mol is actually 176g not 171g potentially putting the sucrose mass out. It may bug you it may not just pointing it out.

I dropped chemistry when I was 15. Now that I'm 32 - and all the pressure is off - I just like to watch these videos to learn. It makes me wonder how school can be so ridiculously ineffective. I just wished someone had explained to me then that we were trying to uncover the mysteries of the universe and it is an ongoing adventure - instead of making it feel like I just had to cram boring information into my brain....
Now I just love what John and Hank do!
Andromeda2803 I know what you mean.. I'm 26 and I want to gather as much information as I can.. because I started asking questions. In school they just put the information on the table and you have to eat it.. without really knowing what you are actually putting in your head.
The education systems really must change. They must compel children to seek the knowledge.. not force it in their heads.
Andromeda2803 I'm a sophomore in high school and I get what you mean. The entire school system is just centered on mindless interminable homework assignments, and I (and many other students) would do so much better if there was no homework, and we were just watching the Crash course videos. The world would be a much better place if John and Hank were teachers.

Andromeda2803 just passed my high school exams. Watching this video, i remembered everyone that followed chemistry complain about how dang complicated it is, molar equations being one of the major issues. just through looking up a couple videos since i need it for university, i already understand so much of chemistry with only like 10-15 hours put in, while they've had 400+ school hours and extra work at home. School is so bloody ineffective, i actually feel really fucking embarassed that our school system (Holland) is rated really high and that STILL in this system all kids/teens spend so many years in school while basically everything could be taught within a single year. It's just a fucking waste of 10+ years of a kids' life that could be spent on work, discipline, self-improvement and far deeper knowledge and understanding of all subjects now taught.

Here in Mississippi we are trying to get our public schools funded with "Initiative 42" which, if it passes, will force the legislation to provide the exact amount of money that the law states we should receive. At the moment, public schools in MS receive far less than the law says we should have. And yet you still see people actively putting out advertisements that slander Initiative 42 because people are stupid.
Is it weird that I find Hank so relaxing and will literally choose to watch these videos without an exam deadline to consider?

Most instructors are just following a set of lectures on a textbook. This is why most f them don't really understand what they are teaching. How is it hard to have a degree in education when all you have to do is go to class everyday, but professors who have a PhD are another case.

Remember two things:
1 Mol is 6.022 * 10^23
and that AMU is basically how much it weighs in grams after multiplying by one mol.
Confused? One mole of an element with an AMU of 57 would weight 57 grams, one mole of water is one hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms, which equals 34 grams.

I could help with naming compounds, depending how difficult they are.
I'm stuck on trying to learn how to name covalent compounds specifically. Like sufulric acid, and phosphorus acid, stuff like that
I have no idea how to name any compounds, but for acids, to name any acid:
For binary acids(containing two elements, hydrogen and the other element)
*Add the prefix _hydro-_ , and change the element's ending from anything to _-ic_, and then add _acid_ as another word.
For example
HCl becomes _hydro_chlor_ic_ acid
HBr becomes _hydro_brom_ic_ acid
HI becomes _hydro_iod_ic_ acid
Not sure about polyatomic ions though. If the ion contains an _ate_ as a suffix, change that to _ic_ and add the word acid.
If the acid contains a polyatomic(molecule) ion with the suffix _-ite_, simply change _-ite_ to _-ous_ and add the word acid.
For example
H2SO3 becomes sulfur_ous_ acid
HNO2 becomes nitr_ous_ acid
Naming bases is easier. Just use the name of a chemical and then change the ending of a non-metal element to _-ide_
For example:
NaCl becomes Sodium Clor_ide_
If the base contains OH-, then simply name the metal, then add hydroxide
NaOH is Sodium _Hydroxide_
KOH is Potassium _Hydroxide_
For bases without Hydroxide Ions(OH-), then you're on your own.
Anything else, that's the limit of my knowledge.

At 11:39s there is a typo guys, it almost caught me out. Instead of writing 384g as the mass of oxygen the animated slide says 348g. My calculation does work with the 384g though. Thank you very much Hank it's fun studying with your teams videos! :)

We worked on stoichiometry for a year in class. At the end of the year, there were still a significant amount of students who didn't know what a mole is or why a mole of an element weighs that certain amount. This video could have taught any student , who really wants to learn, all of that which they have been unable to learn in a full year, in 30 minutes and perfectly. Thank you for these videos. Your lively approach, organized descriptions and the amazing presentations work wonderfully together to really make education "come alive".

Sir Francis Actually you don't build a tolerance to arsenic. Arsenic is a heavy metal, and heavy metal poisoning builds up over time to kill you slowly. It was in fact the advantage of that toxin in the renaissance era; the fact that it would seem like a slow death to disease. The only things you can build a resistance are the receptor mediated toxins, or the toxins that can be flagged and destroyed by the immune system; something like proteins. Definitely not arsenic.

Hank, I love your creativity, hilarity and wit in every one of your videos! I sometimes wonder what the process is for making these. I can see how much you effort and dedication you put into these videos, and your passion for science and teaching. Although I cannot remember even 1/3 of what I'm initially taught in class, I've come to really enjoy chemistry because like you say, it is the foundation of everything. I'm taking chem 100 in college and I believe I'll be watching these until (and after) I graduate. I'll also be showing these to my future kids, and by that point we'll all be old fashioned. Also, where is that shirt from?

At 11:37 12 x ~32 should be 384, but it says it’s 348g. 12 mil of O2.
I think the thing I admire most about Hank is his elevation of trolling to a fine art form with a skill and subtlety that would have made Mozart blush. Especially knowing how a lot of high school classes watch these, he walks right up to the edge of a dirty joke, winks, and walks away. I love it!

OK I have just realized something about these videos... They are designed for use in reviewing the material, not learning it. I'm trying to learn chemistry before taking it next semester, and I noticed that everything is covered so fast that I sometimes have to go on other videos where they explain a specific process more slowly. But still, this is of great help.
I'm in 7th grade and I can completely understand this guy. He does such an excellent job explaining the topics. I just hope what I'm learning now will stick because from what I've seen public school chem. teachers don't seem like the best and I want to be prepared.

The best way to approach stoichiometry in a few easy steps..1. balance the equation (if its not already) 2. convert the amounts given (usually grams) into moles
3. while everything is in moles you can determine how much moles would be used or formed for the compound in question. Straight forward. No confusing conversion table. Your welcome.
ugh my chem teacher takes points off if we don't use that stupid conversion table. I wish I could just go with this.
