  • The largest and most successful empire in history wasn't Rome: it was the Mongols. This week I interview Jack Weatherford the New York Times bestselling author of "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World" about what made the Mongolian Empire so successful. . . and what is REALLY hidden in Genghis Khan's grave.

    Reading this book really made me wish that the Mongols had decided to conquer all of Europe. The entire landscape of the world would have been much different. Surely, the mongol focus on science, engineering, and religious freedom would have made a better world for the rest of us.

      I disagree, the Mongols would kill off all resistance. The would have ruled for a short time most likely if Ogedei have lived longer. Cultures affected by mongol conquest ended up: authoritarian, secluded and conservarive.

      @@ryhol5417The mongols basically only killed soldiers and the elite wealthy class. They didn’t just wantonly kill everyone unless they (The Mongols) were egregiously disrespected. I don’t think you’ve even read this book. Both of these comments reek of colonial European propaganda. The mongols were demonized, but European Christians were committing heinous atrocities across European and the Americans all throughout the Mongol’s reign, whereas, Nations ruled by the Mongols during the exact time period experienced a renaissance of science and religious tolerance. When Christians were killing anyone who was not a catholic, Mongols built Churches, Mosque, and Temples within their cities and encouraged religious freedom. The mongols helped save many of our ancient scientific advancements from the ignorant destruction of European Christians, who would kill anyone for even believing that the earth revolves around the sun

    There are a lot of lost history of Mongols.
    A few aspects to study as Mongol influences after 1300 hundreds include:
    - Potential financing of the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire (related with Golden Horde, Blue and Green Horde history)
    - Mongol civil war essentially led European to find sea route to China because Ottomans blocked the Constantinople and Golden Horde had its internal struggles, which blocked the trade from Europe
    --- Indirect influence on the establishment of the British Empire and discovery of the Americas
    --- Spanish & Portuguese trade with Japan through Atlantic and then Pacific
    --- Spanish & Portuguese of Americas
    - Considerable portion of Cossacks in Napoleonic war which destroyed the Grande Arme was Kalmyks who originated from South West Mongolia
    - You already mentioned the Moghul Empire (Persian pronunciation for Mongol)
    - Establishment of the Manchu Qing Dynasty
    - Boxer War
    - Opium Wars
    - John Adams sold many copies of Mongol History book (in French from France) to Americans including the founding fathers including Thomas Jefferson | Thomas Jefferson's copy of the book is still in the Library of Confress | some aspects and wording of the Declaration of Independence sounds similar to pieces found from Yasa, Secret History of Mongols or written accounts by Persians or Chinese sources
    ....

    Something that has been wiped from our history is the Empire of the Tatarian's, who ruled globally. Evidence of their architecture is in all major Western cities like Washington, Ottawa, London etc. Where we have some unique Greco architecture not found elsewhere in government buildings.
    This empire was apparently brought down in the early 1800's.

    His takes on the Mongols conveniently ignores all the millions who were massacred and how the Mongols themselves bragged about it and seemed to relish in it. Can be seen in the secret history of the Mongols, which is written by the sons of chingis. Weatherford ignores these key facts about the brutality of the steppe and how it translate into their interactions with sedentary society. Even in this video weatherford ignores the holocaust the Islamic world went through under the chingisids. His dismissal of the sack of Baghdad and the hundred of ther cities, would be like writing an autobiography about how hitler helped create modern Europe and why all the deaths in 19th century were worth it for what we have today. Ridiculous how weatherford ignores how the Mongols would kill entire cities, not just the elite like he claimed, urgench balk Nineveh Baghdad ect had EVERY LIVING THING KILLED in the cities , this is attested in both Mongol,Muslim and Chinese sources. like saying hitler created new buisness opportunities in Europe after ww2. The Mongols were an incredible people but were also incredibly violent and to ignore this is like saying look at the good that happened in Europe after ww2 bc of the nazi. Ridiculous apologic statements by weatherford if you have ever studied the Mongols in an academic setting.

    • @sgcarney
      @sgcarney  Před 6 měsíci +4

      Well, Weatherford is an academic with an appointment at Macalaster, so he certainly studied it in an academic setting. He doesn't shy away from talking about Mongol massacres in his books, but he does try to contextualize them. I do understand your perspective though.

    • @otis8983
      @otis8983 Před 6 měsíci

      Only gripe I have with him is his dismissal of the insane amount of people the were killed under Mongols. From what I’ve read from studies done on glacier carbon levels from human cooking fires along with primary sources from the time. Estimates of how many people were killed in the JUST in great khans lifetime alone ranges from 30-70 million…just think it’s ridiculous to dismiss the death of 10s of millions. The great khan is still the goat tho make no mistake

      @@otis8983 I am personally skeptical about the number of massacred ppl, could you please share your source? I have been reading Julia Pongratz's research a little, and it seems she hasn't connected the deaths to the findings. So I am intrigued to know who managed to connect the deaths with the research with certainty. Thanks!
