  • From the initial discovery of gold in the mid 1800's to the creation of a state historic site, South Pass City has witnessed much of Wyoming's history. In addition to being the site of Wyoming's first big gold strike, South Pass City was instrumental in Wyoming becoming a territory and ultimately a state. It was the birthplace of women's suffrage, the first territory to grant women the right to vote and hold public office. But South Pass City is perhaps best known as Wyoming's first boom and bust town, with hard working and hard drinking miners, loose women, gambling and the entrepreneurial businesses who profited from their dreams of instant wealth.

As a thru hiker from Mexico to Canada on the Continental Divide Trail, I passed through South Pass City.
I remember leaving Rawlins and walking for many days across the Great Divide Basin. One windy afternoon I spotted the Wind River Range in the distance sort of floating above the horizon.
A day later I walked into Atlantic City and stopped in to the little bar there.
They had the resupply package I had mailed myself from Rawlins so I could hike into the Winds without having to make a long difficult round trip hitch to Lander.
Had a beer or two and a cheeseburger.
It was late afternoon when I walked into South Pass City.
    A beautiful place.
I slept on the hill above town.
The next morning I began the long approach and eventual climb into the Wind River Range and onward towards Canada.
In the years since, everytime I drive over South Pass, I still look for the place I crossed that highway on foot.
    I always find it too.
And remember that star filled night above South Pass and how the next morning I crossed the highway, and how grateful I was to the folks in Atlantic city for holding that resupply package that saved me a very difficult hitch to Lander.
South Pass is a special place for me.

Never knew the town was a time period of 3 periods. The history of the mine was exciting.

My Grandfather Cook, built a two room cabin with Mr Mahaffey in 1925 one mile north of Atlantic City. He mined two pits in the area, and my mother walked two miles ever day to the school in Atlantic City.
