Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime. - Hudba
Thank God somebody caught this epic Santana performance on film...with decent audio.
Es una obra de arte, ciertamente.Soy seguidor de Santana y en especial del timbalero José Chepito Areas y todas las grabaciones que hay son espectaculares.Saludos desde España.
The best "jam band" ever. 12 minutes of pure fire without ever losing the groove. Tightness from beginning to end. Everyone right on point while having so much fun. Percussions unparalleled. And Carlos more than happy to let everyone else take the spotlight. Viva Santana!

The 33 minute and 44 minute version of The Allman Brothers "Mountain Jam". The 12 minute version of the Allman Brothers "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed ". And the live versions of Molly Hatchet "Dreams"

Easily one of the greatest live performances in rock history.
Not
Intense.....
Nah tripping on acid at Woodstock before they were big has to top this
Easily, hard to come up with another that can stand up to this, my previous was Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock, but they are way beyond that here.
.😊
Defenitely the best recorded Santana concert of all time,Michael Shrieve creating a massive thunderstorm on his tiny drumset! The soundtrack of my youth , my generation (I am almost 70) is absolutely blessed growing up with that kind of fantastic music!
Saw them in 1973 at Kent state University and a year later in Akron.
I’ve seen them 3 times; first was in Tulsa ‘76 supporting Frampton Comes Alive w/Gary Wright who sadly just passed away. Fantastic band! 😊
I'm 66 and I couldn't agree more
You are so right, took me 3 years to copy the congas, will not imagine the drums,he is genius, what happend to him, never heard nothing else?I'm sixty already
Sabe como se llama el de las congas el de blanco ?
That Hammond organ is simply incredible! It really drives the music.
Nothing and I mean nothing say's rock like a b3
Hard to imagine that dude founded Journey a few years after this.
When I am confined to my rocking chair, old and feeble, and compelled to watch my days dwindle down to a precious few, if nothing else, I will be able to say with pride that we rocked out loud in the Sixties and Seventies.
Nothing since has equaled what we had.
No Autotune, no pitch correction... They did not need it.
Just boatloads of raw, pure, unadulterated talent.
I wish I had a time machine so I could take you young folks back to witness those days live, real, in person. Then you would know what a real band sounds like.
Thank goodness these videos remain to give you some sense---a taste, a feeling---of what it was like.
And just think…today there’s a boatload of auto tuned hip hopsters to entertain the masses. There’s no musical component to it, just look at me ain’t I somethin’ celebrities. Somebody turn the clock back 53 years.
Saw santana at great woods. Still got the t shirt! ❤
AMEN Brother!
Great Woods Mansfield Massachusetts I'm Norton Massachusetts.
Your feet from Norton Massachusetts.
I was at this concert. Tickets were $4. Love rewatching this show and jam. Wish Greg Rolie never left the band. These guys were so tight!
His solo was amazing. I got so into it and wanted him to keep playing.
Greg helped form Journey, but Santana band is timeless
Yeah, two cool bands.@@jbrobinson2728
Look at how close the audience is to the band...No barriers, no huge security force...just their fans enjoying the music
That's the way it was back in the day. Then people got stupid.
Theres always been stupid people they just didnt care about regulations back then ☠️
that is why I have hearing aids to this day, yyyiiiippppeee

Best Santana lineup with Michael Shrieve on fire on those drums. Love♡
Don’t forget about Michael Carabello 🥵 on the Congas and Jose’ “Chepito” Areas on the timbales, too!
The amount of energy those conga players put into this performance is incredible.
That’s right! Whew!!! I love the rhythm section the best.
Michael Carabello on congas - he’s so HOT ha! 😍
Jose’ “Chepito” Areas on timbales, too!
Michael Shrieve remains, to this day, the best drummer I've ever enjoyed listening to. A rhythm god. There may be more technically skilled drummers, but they tend to lose the groove (a.k.a. the whole point) of a tune. Shrieve NEVER lost it. EVER. Stunningly in the pocket all the time. And that's just one guy- this was a whole band so in the pocket and so full of talent- Santana, Rolie making magic on the keys, Brown holding it down, and- of course- Chepito and Carabello never get enough credit for being an integral part of the rhythm band. Damn this is a great listen. :)
Damn right!
You got them all. Mike did his own cd/lp. Amazing
6.8 million views and I myself have accounted for a few dozen or so - just can't get enough of this crew.
And don't forget the guy with the maracas!
Tight playing, crazy intensity and a real crowd igniter, you cannot fail to find the groove and start dancing. The drum solo never fails to excite, the instrumental breaks are nearly a side show. The drummer is something else making more sound out of a relatively small kit than others do with much bigger and more complex sets. However the tune just becomes a musical incendiary when Carlos and Gregg start interplaying in the second half. Why can't modern day players match the skills these guys show?
Still gives me chills today to listen to Santana!
X 2
One in a thousand years.
OMFG!!! What did I just see?!?!?!! I just about bounced off of my couch!
INSANE!!!
I'm getting a boner
most of us grew up with this
I have watched the Woodstock version many times because it was epic. This version is even better!
Michael says so himself.
I like both for different reasons 🔥
Totally agree
Indeed!
WELL SANTANA LOOKS SOBER IN THIS ONE .
MAYBE?
Michael Freaking Shrieve!!!! 4 drums he's playing- 4 DRUMS!!! WHY IS HE NOT NAMED AS ONE OF THE BEST EVER?
Because he only used 3 drums.
Hes bad ass
Hate to break it to you, but he used four(kick, snare, rack and floor). He's killer, either way.
Four drums. Four. Snare, two toms, bass. Four.
And he practically keeps up the standard of the solo for the rest of the tune, what energy!!
Rhythm section out front. Carlos standing back with the drummer. He and Shrieve are watching each other the entire time. Unconventional. Awesome! What a band!
Soul Sacrifice is imo, one of the finest high energy songs ever! My absolute fav Santana song. From the opening bongos to the great guitar work, the brilliant drumming of Michael Shrieve, excellent keyboards…none better!
Concuerdo
Everyone who’s played this about 1000 times raise your hand..

Me too
The whole band is awesome
Not entirely sure, but I think he was about 19 at this time. Wow.
possibly the best drum solo I have ever seen. 4 piece set + a few cymbols. I know Neil Pert was great and Clem Burke from Blondie but Shrieve is outstanding and still a teenager at the time. I bow to you Sir!
indeed......... he had to be to play with an ensemble like this!
WOW! Drum solo to remember, Michael Shrieve, respect.!!!!
pamela Raman I saw them back in the day and I think he is one of the best back then .Mad RESPECT
It never ceases to amaze me, as a drummer, that most of the comments are about the drummer. Not just here, but in almost every classic rock era post. Either a ton of drummers watch CZcams, or the guys like Shrieve, Moon, Bonham, etc were so electric that the camera and the focus had to be one them...I vote both.
superbe
FULL respect for this so young man at this time!!!!!!!
Tu kiffes ta race plus de 45 ans après. .....😎
One of the most amazing things about Santana's band is the percussionists play rhythms that also harmonize. The drums speak to the soul.
Yes, love the conga player Michael Carabello the best, he’s so fantastic to watch!
The energy of this performance is like a drug!!! I feel like i havent aged at all!! Im only 66!!! Diggin this!!!!
This has to be the best live performance ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael Shrieve - drums......OMG, the best
drummer extraordinaire
Damn right!
Tremenda energía
...and so young at the time! I think he was maybe 21 years-old.
He was a kid, never heard before, at Woodstock
Michael Shrieve!!! Genio de la batería!!! Súper músico!!
I'm guessing he was born with drum sticks in his hands. Amazing .
I agree
Used to be, he's not Carl Palmer anymore he must have arthritis or doesn't practice much anymore
Whatever you said only in English, Latin, French......etc. lol.
This conga player, played during the Santana concert, until his hands bled. He went back stage, taped his hands up, and continued playing. I saw the with my own eyes!
Michael Carabello is a fantastic rhythm player, I’ve got a huge lady-crush on him, too. 🎉
I used to jam with members and family of the band - actually it’s not unusual to get cuts and even have your fingers split along the fingerprint .
Trap drummers can glance the cymbals - I have one cymbal that’s splattered with my blood and it’s still there after decades .
We used to play for 8 hours - and if you’re in a band , you should be able to play at least 4 hours straight - don’t want to crap out after a measly couple of hours
Arthritis set in day after but worthy of effort by rythm condos man.!!!!!
@@user-vw8rg6uu6z I don’t have arthritis but my back is screwed up - surprisingly “ suddenly “ in my 60s but I did a lot of heavy work and I was a firefighter - so it takes a toll . I wish some enterprising physician or PT would make a health regimen for drummers - we really need one .
Be that as it may, I am now 70 and listening to this for 13 minutes erases the years between now and 1969 and the first time I was exposed to this song. I'm probably not making any sense but it sure feels right.
I Know what you mean

@@mgasapmg3092 Thank you for affirming my sanity.
@@robford9933 Thank you, I guess I haven't stopped making sense.
You are making perfect sense and there are a lot of us right there with you. This 1970 music seems galaxies away from where we are today in so many ways . Right now I'm an old guy anchored-in-place until the coronapocalypse is over. About a month before this Santana performance on 7-21-70 Chicago played that same stage in what I think was their finest moment.
Michael Shrieve, one of the most underrated drummer of all time....
He isn't underrated amongst other drummers.. same as Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers or that drummer from April Wine.
it is and still one the best drummers of all times....
@@bigsky3072👌Jerry Mercer w/April Wine is a BEAST! 🥁
Epic drum solo by Michael Shrieve. I got chills as the crowd erupted in joy.
Still INCREDIBLE after all these years!
As much as I like their performance at Woodstock, this one, about a year later, is even better! The band is really tight here and the drum solo is incredible. Thank goodness we have these videos to remember how great music was in those days.
Right on!
Here here thank goodness for the good souls who recorded this !
Excellent! Great improvization!
At Woodstock, Mike was just 20. Under those conditions his performance was that against all others are judged.
What's remarkable about Carlos Santana is the fact that he always seems to get better and better. Never reaching the pinnacle. Such a positive force.
Mike Shrieve absolutely ON FIRE. That drum solo gave me full body tingles. Staggering.
I shouted out loud ! Truely amazing.
Blake Williams 21 years old!
You can totally hear the influence of Buddy Rich
Mike Shrieve achieved music immortality. Talent unmatched, Woodstock, Soul sacrifice will be played FOREVER.
And the solo he performed here didn't even come close to the one he performed at Woodstock 1969, and it was still brilliant!
Shrieve and Mitch Mitchell are the two greatest drummers of all time, in my opinion.
Quand la musique était une affaire des vrais artistes et pas seulement une affaire d'argent. Pas de bruit inutile, des paroles offensantes, juste de la musique, la vraie.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 Que du bonheur.
All I can say is WOW! And the best part of this is NOT ONE DAMN phone in the air.
Mike Shrieve criminally underated drummer
You got that right. Another grossly underrated drummer is Danny Seraphine, the original drummer for Chicago
Yes!!
He ain't underrated by me !! BTW He's alive and doing well with his recording studio and jazz band in the great northwest. multimillionaire too !! Don't you get a kick out of that little Ludwig drum kit back in the days of the gigantic double bass drum monstrosities with 30 cymbals and etc.etc.etc. Rock on Mike
❤️
@@johnob3710 I was just thinking that. You could take Michael's kit & throw in Charlie Watt's kit and together they make about half of Neil Peart's kit. All three are great drummers.
Holy shit. I've never seen this live version before today. Fucking amazing! That's a band that's firing on all cylinders.
Tremendoustremenfdous the only word needed
I saw them live at the olympa arena in Detroit. The power went out and the drummer solo for 30 min it was alsome
Absolutely astounding. Everyone, the musicians and the audience is so caught up in it. Just great. What every musician dreams of.

dafuq? Is that actually Carlos Santana?
The intensity and power of this band is just incredible. Notice that Carlos doesn't stand out front and upstage his band mates. He knows that everyone has a job and his is just one of them. Michael is insane on the drums. This was the music of my youth and I am forever grateful it was.
Carlos is ego-less!
Well said
DAMN STRAIGHT ✊ 👊 ✊. Carlos is secure in his STARDOM, confident and proud to be "in the band" ; a part of the performance.
Insane stuff man.
Agree with every word you say, was fortunate enough to have seen them live back in the day with mostly the same line up, and certainly Michael on drums.

I was at Woodstock. Yes I’m that old. And I have watched it hundreds of times since on video and it never gets old. This performance is as good or better. Michael is off the hook. Unbelievable.
Carlos says they were overdosed by Jerry Garcia at Woodstock. Seems like they all were able to adjust their grams at this concert.
prob better because the dropped acid at woodstock,.,,
Such a simple drum set but boy he can play the hell out of it
This performance actually TOPS their set at Woodstock, and that's saying a LOT!
GreatToonz I agree although Woodstock was there most iconic gigs
I totally agree. The filming of Santana during this song at Woodstock drove me nuts. The way they cut away and not show a full screen of the musicians and then film bits and pieces of them and not show the whole band at times. I much prefer this filming.
GreatToonz Perhaps they passed on the LSD for this gig.
Totally agree
The guitar work is better on the woodstock version, everything else is better on this version however
I love the way Carlos always seems to stand centre stage and acknowledges all his musicians individually fabulous ❤❤
To see one of the best guitarist, nonchalantly pick up The Cow Bell, and still keep jammin out. While the rest of the band keep shining. Good stuff.
By today's standards, Mike had such a minimalist drum kit and yet he could dig out the rhythm in an amazing way!
Oh yeah! A jazz kit rather than the Moon/Peart 'more is better' rock setup.
Yeah, all a part of the primal roots he was digging into.
Mike knew the sounds he wanted and worked for it, using distance from the center (the sweet spot) of his drums to get everything out his kit possible. He was all about sounding good rather than looking good. #TheReadDeal
"Santana" was the name of the team, not the man who created it. All contributed equally to create "Soul Sacrifice". They all shared a common groove and each was proud of the rest. It's visible, audible, and felt. Concert-goers were taken on a journey with any words spoken. It was and still is the best instrumental . #TeamSantana.
Yeah, I dig the way Carols stands in the background; you wouldn't know he's the leader.
Patricia Martinez from Chula Vista Ca. 62yrs old. I've never gotten tired of watching &listening to Woodstock's Soul Sacrifice but this jam is the ultimate Santana. Gives me goose bumps every time!!!!! Those were ,the good old days of REAL music. Santana rocks in my heart forever !!,
