Even though the electronic hardware (sound knobs and pickup selector) is smaller than the affinity. I feel if you change to the affinity or higher fender model hardware, it could be a little beast for cheap! I only changed to Hipshot tuners for better tuning stability, and it’s great!

Max, just bought my first Squire. Never played one before. I'm 66 years old and I want to get back into playing guitar and learning/re-learning many of the songs I played between the ages of 12-18. Believe it or not I could do a lot of the lead style you demonstrated in this video...back then. I've alway said that even though I am starting over-ish, I don't need a Guitar Teacher, I neeed a Guitar Buddy. I found your Video site by You Tubing "Squire Guitar". You seem very knowledgable about the brand and I'm anxious to learn more and get back to where I was before (if I even can). This won't be my only guitar because as you you know whenever you ask a Guitar player how many guitars does he need, the answer is always "One more". To show you how ambitious I am, the first song I want to learn on my new Squire is "Bridge of Sighs" by Robin Trower, LOL! How's that for ambitious? And if any song will put my Squire and my little Fender Frontman 10G amp (I named him "Sparky") thru their paces, that one will! Keep playing! And, keep teaching & learning, the world needs good musicians.

Hey Max, just wanted to say thanks for all you do. I think that there's something tremendously helpful for a player that's as (ridiculously) proficient as you are and with your knowledge of gear, in showing folks that are just getting started that you can do amazing things with more modest instruments. So thanks again for being a great educator and advocate for players of all stripes.
As for Squier instruments, I'm a huge fan. I have a Fender standard strat, but I play my Squier teles a lot more. I replaced the pickups in a bullet with Fender deluxe drive pickus, as well as swapping out the tuners for fender tuners. After a setup and some modest fretwork, it was amazing. The other Squier I play is an Affinity Telecaster (FSR) - the configuration was HH, so I replaced the neck pickup with a GFS Surf 90 single coil and replaced the bridge pickup with a GFS Retrotron Nashville humbucker; added coil tap as well. Then I got ridiculous and added locking tuners (just so string changes are faster), and there we are. Squiers on their own can be phenomenal, but they have so much upgrade and mod potential.

My first guitar was a second hand low level squire, a girlfriend at the time gave me. I played it for a few years, then bought a beautiful Jackson, put EMG's in it, and loved to show off, but also found myself overly protective of it... So when I started doing gigs and practices I went back to the Squire, I replaced the bridge pickup with a Duncan or something, and I was actually happy with the sound (Different from the Jackson) and how it felt in my hands. Since it was cheap and second hand, I wasn't worried about it getting knocked around or damaged and that actually made the guitar it's self more fun. It eventually started to fall apart and I tossed it in the trash. I miss having that guitar, I wanted to get another, but I still have the Jackson.

The only thing I hated about it were the tuners, but I couldn't justify putting nice ones on it since I was just going to upgrade anyways eventually.

I have a Left-handed Contemporary Strat HH and it is a very nice guitar. I did upgrade the tuners to Gotoh locking since it does have the two point trem, which I bought some Fender trem bar springs to hold the arm where I want it. I know the pickups aren't expensive but it still has the Fender/Squier sound, which is great. I tune it to E flat and use it for playing SRV, Jimi and such. I like to work on getting my guitars setup so after polishing the fret ends, putting the staggered Gotoh locking tuners on it, setting the action and intonation it stays in tune real nice and plays so easily. The 12" radius compared to the usual 9.5 "or 7.5" radius on Fender and Squier Strats is more comfortable for me as well. I picked up mine for $177 new with tax, but it definitely needed the setup I gave it.

I always bad mouthed strats. Love everything else Fender makes but not the strats. When I picked it up the first thing I noticed was the neck profile, felt super comfortable. It was tuned to E standard. I have always played in B standard, but the past 6 months I have been enjoying E standard. The active Humbuckers sounded great in the Boss Katana 100 watt 1X12 I played through. Held tuning well even with using the Tremelo hard.
The white finish with reverse headstock made it look like a shred machine. Pretty sure it's my next guitar. However I would use it only for E standard tuning. Plus it is on sale for $250.

The Affinity Tele is a GOOD guitar. You won't need to do anything to it. Just play. I've own many Squier guitars from bullets up to deluxe. For a beginner I would say the Affinity in either tele or strat is fine - listed at $199. I traded all of my Squiers in except for two Standards which feel perfect. Satin modern C neck, extra fat body. I replaced all the pots for American made, locking tuners and a Wilkenson bridge assembly. Replaced HSS pickups with Seymour Duncans. My Squier sounds and feels better than an mia strat. I own four Fenders but my Squiers sound/play better than all of them.

The strings are easy to press down, the body is so light, that you can feel the difference in weight from whether or not the preamp battery is installed! After two successive winters of early stage frostbite from MTB riding without proper gloves (remember, wind hits the wrists first), that guitar was part of my recuperative therapy. I have since lent it out to a friend with hand injuries from a dog attack.
Squiers are my idea of the best all-around guitar for those who can only afford one that's rugged enough to be low-to-no maintainence. I recommend steel frets, and lose the trem for that. Setups from that point on should, with proper care, be rare-to-never!

I had a Contemporary Telecaster. I really liked it, but I found myself playing my other Strats more often and traded it for a 70's Vintage Modified Strat that is absolutely awesome. I have a couple Affinities, a couple SE's,a Bullet Mustang and Bullet Tele. All of these guitars I have gone through and done some upgrades or modding of some sort to include fretwork and they play fantastic. If you have the know-how (setup and fretwork) and a little money to upgrade some hardware and pickups, they're great guitars to customize and improve.

I have the same guitar (it's my 7th guitar in 24 years) for about a year. I love it, the neck and the frets are super comfortable, the finish is beautiful (I have the pearl white with black guard), I like that it has only 2 knobs instead of the "standard" three, but I had some quality issues: The high E always broke at the bridge plate, I had to de-burr/polish it to resolve this. The string trees and the nut caused tuning instability when bending or using the tremolo. Replaced the string trees with Graphtech trees (or a cheaper roller-type would do it too) and I had to fix the nut: It was cut too tight even for the stock 42-9 string set. These issues can be easily fixed but can be disappointing for beginners who don't know how to deal with them. Despite these issues I would buy this guitar again but I wish that it had a pop in tremolo arm instead of the screw-in type. After buying this guitar I started to play significantly more because it is so much more comfortable than my previous strats.

I have around 20 Squiers (including a contemporary Stat and Tele) ranging from Bullets up to Classic Vibes. The Bullets can be hit or miss, but that's to be expected at that low price point, since they are not spending much time on fit and finish or quality control compared to the higher end Squiers. Everything from Standards on up, have been really good. The Classic Vibes I have compare favorably to the MIM Fender strats and teles I have - I really put them on par with the each other.

I love my Squiers Max and currently have 7 of them, listed below. One thing I do change on my Squiers is the tuners and string trees as they ain't the best, so every one now has locking tuners and Graptech TUSQ XL string trees.
    Squier Bullet Tele's
FSR Sparkly Red Tele (heavily modified inc all gold hardware, black pickguard, 50's Alnico pickups and locking tuners)
FSR Lake Placid Blue (minor mods inc locking tuners & stainless steel saddles)
    Squier Standard Strats
Black HSS Strat (bridge pickup swapped for Seymour Duncan JB with coil split & locking tuners)
Candy Apple Red SSS Strat with maple fingerboard (locking tuners added)
    Squier Contemporary
White HSS Strat (locking tuners added)
Metallic Red HH Tele (locking tuners & high mass stainless steel saddles added)
Metallic Black HH Tele (locking tuners & high mass stainless steel saddles added)
The base Bullet models are a perfect modding platform for not a lot of money, Standards are a cut above the Bullets/Affinity's quality/pickup wise and the Contemporarys's take things to a whole new level :)

I don’t know if the 2020 models have upgraded tuners but they certainly work very well. It’s light weight which is a big deal for me at this point in life with arthritis in my shoulder. You look like Vincent (John Travolta) in Pulp Fiction haha.
Just bought one of these guitars after realising how easy CAGED chords were to play compared to my acoustic. I had the acoustic because I did not want to spend that much money without knowing whether I would commit, as you rightly said. I hadn't before, because I stuck to piano mostly and was scared of barre chords (yes.) but lately I overcame that and am practicing the CAGED system and have been practicing non stop and felt compelled to get an electric which is the one thing I wanted in the first place!
I subscribed! Thanks for this video, you've got some mad skills!

My first guitar was a Squier Affinity Stratocaster from 2002. It was cream white I added a blue pearloid pickguard to it. I have been using it ever since I bought it for $159. It still works great the only thing I've had to do to it was change out a jack other than that it works great. I have a Schecter C1 Platinum now which is my primary guitar I admit it is better than my Squier. But I still like to pull out my Squier and use it for low distortion tones. That little Squier is priceless to me.

And looking into it further, I ended up deciding on a Harley Benton TE-70 model. It was actually less money even with shipping. They have great reviews and look great. The only down side is I have to wait 10 days to 2 weeks for mine to be delivered (coming from Germany) so there's that. I can't wait!

Jeff Healy played one in the 80's. I am astounded at what a nice guitar even the cheapest $150 dollar ones are today. The fret ends are usually sharp here in the midwest in the winter but other than that they are light years nicer than a cheap guitar from 1978. Back then most of those the strings would be a half inch off the neck. Amps too, that Blackstar sounds great too. I have FLY 3 which is amazing for what it is. This a pretty cool age for gear.

I just bought my first guitar in 30 years. I was really close to ordering a Wolf LP style, but the currency exchange and international freight to Australia killed it for me. Same deal with Harley Benton. In the end it was going to be a Yamaha revstar or a Squier classic vibe. The revstar was a little out of budget so I got the classic vibe HSS. Haven't really tested it out yet, but it looks and feels great. I've now learnt that Artist Guitars are like an AIO in Australia and they have reasonably priced LP and 335 style guitars. One of thise might become axe #2 (if I stick with it)
