  • To be a good maker of things, you'll need a good toolbox. Knowing what to put into it requires you to stay open to teachers, but also be ready to throw away bad advice.

(You can download all of Christopher Swartz's Anarchist trilogy as free pdf's in the store. While you're there, buy a bound book or two. They are high-quality, will last for years, and make your bookshelf look classy.
I also mention Paul Sellers in this video, check him out as well. A truly gifted artist, woodworker, and teacher with over 50 years experience.

Your dad was an amazing teacher and the apple didn't fall far from the tree at all. As always great advice my friend

    Good rap- keep it up!
Things I have learned: There is no hierarchy of wood- fancy wood is not better than plain wood. There is only fitness for purpose, and often what is needed is a block to go in the dirt.
Try not to put one thing on top of another thing because you will likely need the bottom one next. The thing that you begrudgingly spent 45 minutes making or improving has a good chance to still be in use 45 years later.

i have the horrid habit of absentmindedly placing a tool on whatever surface is available while i reach for the next tool. i am constantly losing tools that way. had to start using a toolbox with dedicated spaces for everything so i wouldn't let the tools pile up on surfaces. works most of the time. my shop used to get so cluttered that i'd avoid going in there at all because there was no room to actually do anything because every tool was just sitting every available surface. everybody has their challenges and has to figure out what works for them. i like your idea of one motion to get the tool and put it back. my toolbox is setup such that if it is open already it only takes 3 movements to reach the most buried tool. similar idea i think. enjoying your channel. i don't know if i've said this before but it feels sorta similar to Adam Ragusea a bit in the edit and conversational style. that is intended as a compliment.

At 61 I suspect that I have OCD, today I realize I may have ADHD also, and explains why I lay things down since I'm the only here also. Which is why I'm going to hang up my dishes, and I can't find my birth certificate. Oh yeah I subbed. LOL

Thank you! Neuro divergent diagnosis' often have Co-morbidities. It's not at all uncommon for someone to discover one and have it lead to discovering more. In addition to ADHD I have dyslexia, tourette's, anxiety and depression. Along with some autistic traits.
