  • After a bruising first test defeat in Pretoria, Ireland and South Africa meet again this Saturday in Durban. Matt Williams and Alan Quinlan join Stuart McAvoy to review that opening test and look ahead to this weekend's fixture. Matt also responds to the social media backlash following his comments on the Springboks use of their bench last week.

The game evolves, Matt. What is it about the ethos of the game suggests that you cannot use your substitutes to change your starting pack? It is actually a risk that Rassie takes, because to be able to change your pack means that you have very few back-line substitutes available. What if a winger gets injured and there is no suitable replacement on the bench? Putting your team in a position to bring on a Bomb Squad is both a privilege and a risk. But it is not against the laws or the ethos of the game. Lastly, I don't think that Matt should get to decide what is and what isn't against the ethos of the game. Rugby is a game of physical dominance - always has been and always will be.

Listening to Matt Williams explain his reasoning regarding the reserve bench selection, I now have a better idea of where he's coming from and understand his logic. I don't necessarily agree with it, or with many of his view points, but good on him for sticking to his guns. Last time I watched the Springboks play the All Blacks, I'm pretty sure the AB's handled the Boks pack quite well and dealt with the "Bomb Squad" when they came on the field, even though the AB's were down to 14 men for most of the that game.
The AB's played two test in SA in 2022 and were expected to lose both games by plenty, especially after losing to Ireland at home. They lost the first test and won the second. A new front row of de Groot and Lomax more than held their own against the much fancied SB pack. They ended up winning the Rugby Championship.
These are the games Ireland really need to get up for to confirm their credentials. I think the Boks will win, but if Ireland can play like they did last week and eliminate errors, they're in with a chance.

Matt, it seems like this has been a process. The boring style (as you have mentioned time and time again) the Boks were implemting in the beginning was them working on defence, set piece and forward domination, then they added kicking game plan, then focused on replacements and now they are working on attack. While everyone was moaning about boring rugby, they were mastering all parts of the game. It takes time. Once experience is gained in all areas, they can combine all parts into one game plan and maintain a good balance, using what they know at the right time. I think that will at the end of the day make for very entertaining rugby, as opposed to just a back dominated game plan. First you moaned about boring rugby and now you are moaning about safety. Seems like Rassie was thinking in futures while you are thinking in the now. Maybe one day you will go "Ahh now I get it."

Secondly the game evolves, surely the game is not the same as it was in 1924? Amazing that these guys treat Pratt Williams like a rugby guru.
He has a shockingly poor record at coaching and although he thinks highly of his own opinion, the content of the points he makes are spurious at best.
The South African equivalent would be asking Alistair Coetzee what his revered opinion was and then hang on his very word.
    Weird.
Maybe the sole reason he is on the show is to troll the Saffers.

When did playing to your advantage become dangerous? The opposition’s job is to stop the other team… I thought that’s what sports in general is all about. It’s like saying a basketball coach playing a big rotation is not fair for a smaller team, or a soccer coach bringing defenders to protect their lead… who gave this guy a microphone?

I am not sure why the Irish are looking tired. Are the Springbok players not in a worse position? They have been playing since the world cup and now they are going into the Championship. At a player level both the IRFU and SARU have mandatory rest periods for international players - perhaps this is where the superior SA depth really counts.

Matt really has lost the plot. There's a reason World Rugby are ignoring him. No one thinks he's having a go at South Africa or Rassie. People are irritated by the fact his argument is WRONG. There is no data or statistical evidence to back his rant up. In fact all the evidence suggests the opposite. Any injuries in world rugby this weekend caused by extra forwards on the bench? Anyone? Any injuries caused by the scary bomb squad in the World Cup? No? Exactly. It's just a rant with nothing to back it cause he had a mate that got injured playing rugby now he's on an irrational crusade.

Matt Williams has never had anything good to say about the Bok’s unless it’s in a setup sentence to then criticize them. He makes these comments with Zero evidence. The bomb squad has been going for 6 years now and not a single rugby player has been injured as a result. I remember him calling our team "head but champions". Tottally disrespectfull of the Boks and South Africans in general. He has made his point now can he just sit down.
