This is the first time I've heard this song and wow, I LOVE IT! Taylor is so amazinly talented and I'm sure she can sing just about anything. I take my hat off to her. Taylor Swift is some voice.
Well she was an American girl Raised on promises She couldn't help thinkin' that there Was a little more to life Somewhere else After all it was a great big world With lots of places to run to Yeah, an d if she had to die Tryin' she had one little promise She was gonna keep Oh yeah, all right Take it easy baby Make it last all night She was an American girl It was kind of cold that night She stood alone on her balcony She could the cars roll by Out on 441 Like waves crashin' in the beach And for one desperate moment there He crept back in her memory God it's so painful Something that's so close And still so far out of reach Oh yeah, all right Take it easy baby Make it last all night She was an American girl
OMG, I REMEMBER SOMETIME AT MY LIFE IN MAYBE 2011/2012 I WAS IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG, JUST CAME BACK IN MYBHEAD TODAY, I'M HERE REMEMBERING MY TIMES AS A KID.

eliisi, this comment you uploaded by 1tompettyfan is wrong. He said before Taylor was 10, when it actually came out long before she was even born. It came out in 1977. Many have covered this song, but I think Taylor's version is the best cover. Her soft voice is perfect for this song.
There is something instinctively genuine about Tom Petty's delivery of his songs. Taylor Swift has many talents, but coming across as "genuine" and un-calculated is just not her thing. This is essentially like the original, but feels like an icy textbook sight-reading with none of Tom Petty's sense of restless urgency which matched the story in the lyrics perfectly. There is really no point in doing a cover unless you bring something new to the table that makes it worth a second listen. I'm just not feelin' it.
I've been so deeply bothered by her empty performance, and the desperate attempt to duplicate the guitar tone, that I'm not even sure what to say. The faster paced, call of the original from Toms vocal performance to each band members instrumental passion filled input invokes deep feeling and connection. I'm glad I'm not the only one who spotted the broken vibe of this "cover."
So she makes a cover that is essentially an exact carbon copy, with nothing at all of value to add to it...except for really stupid changes like changes "hear the cars roll by like waves crashing on the beach" (makes sense, nice image) to "see the cars roll by like waves crashing on the beach" (makes no sense). Fail.
Good song to cover by a girl who embodies the lyrics and even appreciates the depth to them. Go, Dr. Tay!
WOW! I never knew Taylor covered Tom! This is amazing! Huge fan of both!
i start to think she can sing anything!
she is so awesome!

Well she was an American girl

Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin' she had one little promise
She was gonna keep
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl
It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin' in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it's so painful
Something that's so close
And still so far out of reach
Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

What ??? She is her own producer, and she didn't write this song.
Tom wrote it when he lived in CA.

Wow dude you're asking to get punched in the face

I love her unplugged piano performance much better.
czcams.com/video/eeCpF12V10Y/video.html check her new cover of the song. So worth it.
There is no point in doing a cover unless you capture the spirit of the original and she does. It’s great.
Petty is better than anything, but this is a strong tribute. It brings out the other side of the story really well.

Hhm..yes true
