  • VW Paddle Shifter Tutorial. In this video I will show you how to install paddle shifters on MK7.5 Golf R. This can apply to many other cars. We are replacing the entire paddle shifter button/switch. These are not the stick on paddle extensions. I will also compare a $25 set of paddle extensions to a $225 pair. Will the part that is 10x more expensive be better? #r32 #golfR #humblemechanic

@lako lako Maybe.... The company that retails them for $225 may have spent a ton of money R+D. Maybe the $25 stole the design. These are all questions that we have to ask. If this was a VCDS tool, Id happily spend the money. Here I am mixed. And probably a hypocrite LOL

I'm 99% sure they came from the same factory. Both are made in China by factory we'll call X. The cheap ones were ordered in bulk from X by some company A that sells them on ebay. The second was ordered by some company B to be made to higher standards and the X just polished it (removing some metal, hence wiggle) and painted it gloss. Afterwards the B decided that their paddle shifters are the best on the market and require a hefty premium. Also since they're more expensive it means less customers, so smaller orders, so more expensive, you get the feedback loop. In the end B ends up charging a lot more than A for a product that's marginally better. That's how those things happen.

No I don't think they are. The cheaper ones are likely cast and pressed however the expensive ones are likely CNC Milled. These processes are vastly different and while casting is much cheaper, it is only feasible for high quantity production. My guess is that the expensive ones were a specially milled, low production design and model which the cheaper ones copied and mass-produced for a lower cost.

I'm surprised more manufacturers don't put more effort into paddle shifter design and quality on performance vehicles. That's one thing Alfa got right on the Giulias equipped with paddles. The OEM aluminum paddles look and feel amazing. Also, $250 for those paddles is ridiculous. Even if it's entirely manufactured in the U.S. it shouldn't be anywhere near that price. For $240 I bought an entire coolant reroute kit that was CNC machined and anodized in the U.S.

I got the stick on kind (look exactly like the ones you didn't install, but mine had the right cup shape) for $10 on aliexpress. The machined edge gives a glare at certain angles, which I don't like, otherwise I think they fit in nicely with the Mk7 GTI since it has that brushed aluminum style finish where the R has the piano black. I was also worried about them falling off, especially with this summer heat. But I gave the factory ones a good cleaning with alcohol to get all the dirt and oil off before the install, and the 3M has served me well for 6 months so far. Of course, they're probably going to fall off when I get back into my GTI later today - but if that happens I think I might snag a set of those $25 ones.

If the paddles on Mk5 are the same as on Mk6 (and they likely are), then to access the paddle shifter button axes you will have to remove the airbag, the media buttons panel and unscrew the paddles because the axis is pressed flat against the plastic surface and located at the base of the shifter, that's covered by the steering wheel plastic. Then, you'll need to push the axes through and out out of the paddles using something like a small hex wrench, install new shifter buttons, and reassemble everything back.

I've been rooting for the cheaper ones since day 1 even for the cheap 3M-ed on ones!!

I have the cheapy ones. They do wiggle, but I put some closed cell foam in between the insert sticks & stopped that issue. Gutted for those who paid $200 for the glossy branded ones.

hi Charles, would you help a guy out with some info? I'm looking into retrofitting a 2013 vw cc rline steering wheel onto a 08 Passat Vr6 4MOTION. now my car has the multifunction buttons, cruise mounted on the stalk and the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. would i be able to do this retrofit? would i need any different modules or electrical components? I'd really appreciate any advice you could have for me. thank you in advance

I have the stick on ones on my TTS- they’ve never come undone and don’t wobble at all.
Only issue I see with them is that they’re a little close to the indicator and wiper stalk.

buy the 25$ 26$ ones..do them a good gloss painting job and you have the gorgeous results of the 225$ + plus you keep the anti slippery lines of the cheaper ones.

Are there any paddles like this for the polo gt 150 2015? I Can only find the ones with 3m tape, but I would rather have the kind he uses om the video.

What pair of pliers is that? I have some stanley ones and they don't seem to reach all the way to the pin, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I got the stick on ones for my mk7 and they fit pretty well. I just wish they had that style for the replacements and not just the stick on

It looks like that the cheaper ones are cast aluminium, and the expansive ones are billet aluminium.

And for a part with almost zero stress on it, it shouldn't even matter.

I have a set of those stick on styled paddles. Bought them maybe 5 years ago, and they still are on. But after seeing this, might be changing to a more “proper” fitting set.

    Nice video.
Before I change mine out for this style my driver side right paddle doesn't have the clicking sound like the left paddle. Any clue as to what that could be? Thanks

    • @nicksGLI

Mine were both a bit different sounding too. After putting the cheap metal ones on, the right is louder in than the left. Lol. Whatever.

I must agree that it's a nice touch to have this upgrade, but the bad thing to it that it will not be illuminated anymore, unless you don't care to see the (+) and (-) lighting red at night.

@humbleMechanic, will having that extra leverage with the longer shift paddle, will it per-maturely wear switch ?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  Před 2 lety

It’s possible. But you’d have to really be beating on it
