    I got rid of my Kronos for Montage. Kronos is essentially 9 engines with 20 year old organization. Combis and Programs?? The M1 in 1989 had that. Lol so other than the sound engines Kronos could USB to computer but was not an interface plus every DAW I tried it with took quite a tough effort (through an interface). Montage and MODX stagnated the market with what they released. I love my Montage; but this is taking a very studious approach. The FANTOM is unique. The Zen Core is from the V Piano where there is not a stipulated number in polyphony. The zen architecture is 256 but the Scene arrangement in its main mode is also chained. Seamless transitioning and pattern real-time sequencer, Step sequencer , TR based , and each part in a scene is a sound, each sound is made up of four partials. Each component makeup allows stackable LFO. Totaling 128 running LFOs. Two ARPS, the Pads allow loops, you can cut splice a sample and loop it and use that in any of the sequencer modes. It’s a beast. It builds on Montage philosophy - and really sounds incredible

    How do the Fantom's pianos compare with the RD 2000's? Does the Fantom have both modeled and sampled pianos like in the RD 2000, or just modeled pianos via the V-Piano engine? Also, is Zen Core essentially an improved version of Supernatural, or is it not really related at all?

    Not thought I'd live long enough for a new keybed and NEW aftertouch sensors. The later forever and always was the weak spot of any Roland/Matsushita kb, only lasting two or three years. Then gradually all aftertouch and velo sensitivity slowly vanished. If you buy used Rolands always check for full 127 midis on vel and aft without the need for a hammer.

    I've always been a devoted Yamaha keyboardist since my first Clavinova back in the 90's. Yamaha (Clavinova) has always been THE piano sound on a digital keyboard. Their sampling methods and technology have been miles ahead of everyone.
    But this is the first digital piano I've ever heard that can go toe-to-toe with a Clavinova.
    Modeling seems to be the way of the future, and sampling is becoming the way of the past.

    • @pgtips4240

      I have owned 2 clavinovas in years past and I hated both of them. After the second one I said I would never buy another clav again, I think they sound really cheap and crap, thats the honest truth. I now have a Roland RD2000 which blows every clav out of the water imo. I would consider swapping over to this fantom though, it looks awesome.

      @@pgtips4240 I think you’re probably alone in that experience. Clavinovas are top of the line in the industry. No typical stage piano or synth can compare. There’s a reason they’re so expensive.

    • @pgtips4240
      @pgtips4240 Před 4 lety

      @@vanessajazp6341 Well I have owned 2 reasonably high spec ones and they really did have a suboptimal sound imo. They would have been ideal for a classical musician who was just interested in reading music and playing classical pieces but for pop, jazz & stage performance etc the sound was just too boxy and boring. The EP's were even worse, just cheap sounding. They are home pianos, not really designed for live performance and it does show. Having said this though, yes, whatever floats your boat, if you like them then all power to you my friend. I will stick with my RD2000 for the time being.

      @@pgtips4240 It’s all in the ears and personal taste. I have never heard a Roland piano that sounds as good as a Clavinova. And I do own a Clavinova and a Roland, btw.
      To my ear, the Rolands all sound dull or too warm, where the Yamaha’s have much greater presence and brilliance. The sound cuts through a mix. There’s a reason you find Yamaha grand pianos on the top concert stages all over the world. The Clavinova is the digital replication of that sound. I get endless compliments about my Clavinova sound when I’m out performing.

    I've seen a couple of videos where the synth's parameters jump (mostly the cutoff), like it does at 22:34. It seems to smoothly pick up most of the time, though. Do you think he did something that made that happen, or is it not picking up the parameter's position?

    • @vdlycos
      @vdlycos Před 2 lety +3

      This is most likely, because the scene contains the info about the cutoff-knob position. When he first touches the cutoff-knob, the current position is now audible instead of the stored position on the scene. The cutoff-knob doesn't necessarily show the current position of the cutoff of your current selected sound. If you look at the knobs above the sliders, you can immediately see he position of the knob after loading a scene.

    If you are planning on buying this synth then be informed that this doesn't have a traditional sequencer on it. It has a very slow, basic, rudimental Ableton Live clip style that has a 32 bar limit. Even though this is called a Fantom, it is not a workstation so please don't make that mistake. Roland have no plans to include a traditional linear sequencer as this is mainly a performance synth. Furthermore, although it os a flagship, it doesn't have the same acoustic realism as say the Integra 7 which is a major disappointment. The onboard drum sounds are similar to a Casio keyboard and have no character and the TR drum sounds are not the same as on the TR-8s which are far superior in realism which means you'll need to buy another piece of hardware to get quality drum tones. Samples cannot be time stretched or manipulated in real time. You basically have to use a DAW to edit samples then import over USB ???? which is super slow and import at the BPM and key of the track you are working on.

    Hi, is this comparable to Montage 8 from Yamaha, or is it like Genos? Would it be possible to compare those two?

    • @ablesam
      @ablesam Před 3 lety +1

      It is more comparable to a Montage as it is a workstation. The Genos is an 'Arranger' Workstation which means that 8-9 of it's 16 channels are dedicated to the parts of styles and thus it will only give you 3 playable right hand voices. The Montage gives you 8 parts and the Fantom gives you 16. The Montage has dual effects per part and the Fantom has 1 per zone. The Montage has the super knob to control multiple parameters while the Fantom has Matrix Control which is a bit more complicated but works in a similar way. They both have inputs to receive external audio but the Fantom has 48V phantom power for Condenser mics. The Fantom has 2 GB keyboard sample space and 1.75 GB pad sampling space while the Montage has 1.75 sample memory for keyboard sounds. The Fantom features an Ableton like sequencer which can features linear, step and TR sequencing options. The Montage has a pattern sequencer. The Montage has no on-board sampling capabilities while the Fantom does and features waveform editing and much more. Montage has 2 engines (AWM2 and FM-X) while the Fantom has a bunch of engines with recent updates but as of writing this it is: Zen-Core which is PCM, VA, SuperSaw and more. Supernatural Piano, E.Piano, Acoustic. V.Piano and the model Expansions: Jupiter 8, Juno 106, SH-101, JX-8P.

I‘m not very good with computers and need an efficient solution that enables me to take my Workstation Demos into the Studio later down the line.

    • @ablesam

      Yes. But you have to assign them to a midi controller like the mod wheels or knobs on the left side as the sequencer records midi data and the Zen-Core engine has data values up to 1024.

  • @DanielMorales-qp8rf
    @DanielMorales-qp8rf Před 3 lety

    I agree that the roland fantom is an incredible machine, alot of fexibility, but i dont think its as versatile as the kronos. The kronos already had the ability to switch sounds without losongveffects and such. Kronos has nine engines that are deep .i do believe the fantom has some to catch up to the kronos. Im confident that the fantom will get better withupdates. Its a win win if you have either board.

    • @ablesam
      @ablesam Před 3 lety +1

      The main thing with the Kronos is it's reached the limit of it's abilities. Plus the workflow of it is just a bit tedious. The nine engines thing while impressive is more of a marketing scheme at this point. Korg hasn't even updated the engine's in a long while where as the Fantom is still a work in progress. It is speculated that for the next 4-5 years it (Fantom) is expected to continually receive updates to improve it's functionality and add tone generation systems to max out it's capability. When looking at it that way the Fantom seems promising and more worth of an investment. Either way both boards have a similar crowd.

    • @fray3dendsofsanity
      @fray3dendsofsanity Před 4 lety

      Isn't that aftertouch and velocity? No idea how to do it specifically on the fantom but those are the things you're looking for to control regarding parameters. Velocity is how hard you press down, aftertouch is when you push down the keys harder.

    • @vanessajazp6341
      @vanessajazp6341 Před 4 lety

      "Aftertouch"
      Higher-end keyboards have had this since the 90's.

    • @alicaramba7680
      @alicaramba7680 Před 4 lety

      It's not aftertouch. It's some sort of modulation. If you familiar with Roland workstation keyboards it's done through so called "modulation matrix", where source of modulation is velocity and destination in this case is filter cut off fq and resonance. I can't say what exactly is done in this case, it's likely standard LFO modulation and pitch related modulation is employed too at the same time. Also, it seems to me when he hit harder completely new samples are played too. At 16:12 you can hear one high sounding tone l believe is other sample (partial as they call).
      The most simplistic way to do that - choose LFO and set it to modulate LP/HC filter cut off frequencie. Set LFO to sine wave, then play some chords and set LFO speed and modulation amount to your taste. In this case modulation will be applied in cycles.

      Easiest way is to stream audio through USB to your PC/Mac and record in DAW. Also you can use SAMPLING option (Reference guide, p. 66), this will save data inside Fantom. Of course, you can do this old fashioned way by connecting Fantom outputs to your recorder inputs with cables (DA/AD conversion involved).

      Kong maybe right, the Montage is a tad ahead or behind it depending on who you ask. But the Genoa is undefeated. If you noticed it's in a different class. Yamaha said it's an arranger workstations. It's the only board I've heard that has sounds indistinguishable from a live instrument, woodwind, violin etc. Hate it or love it. Its the best. Now on to another topic, this guy would be a good salesman of you don't know about boards. He's excited about everything and keeps saying he's never seen this or that on another instrument. This maybe true if he's only into one manufacturer, he'd just have to wait on new models. A lot of those he praised are already in the great Montage and Kronos, but then again, he's a Roland person and they're the 1st for Roland. I love Roland, mind you, all the Fantoms, but this reminds me too much of the Montage with its knobs, sliders and built-in 'super-knob' with the added drum pads that I cursed Yamaha for. This board is a good board nonetheless. I would but it. Now for the expense, they are super expensive. These boards is the cost of a used car in my country but sometimes manufacturers not only look at the overall cost to determine prices but also opportunity costs. These boards are professional grade and some professionals scoop even three when they drop so...who are we poor ass? Anyway, all the boards mentioned are great and should bring joy just to own one to play around. Peace.

      Piyaviraj - having the Zone/Part Select on the left over the channel is better than in that right button grid on the Montage . The PCM polyphony is double @256. It also has the full polyphony V-Piano engine using 1 Zone, which Montage takes up 4 Parts for the better pianos. Then there are only 8 Performance parts on the Montage vs 16 Zones on the Roland. No VA engine in the Montage, which is pretty advanced now on the Fantom. Fantom has stereo analog filter effect, dual CV/Gate. 4-part Motional vector pad on screen. Wheels AND joystick on the Fantom. Internal sampling/editing for the sample pads. No XLRs on the Montage, Fantom has XLR outs and combo/Neutrik XLR ins for the sampler or mic, with dedicated reverb.

    Buy an MPC Live or MPC X with a crazy assortment of Roland, Korg, Moog, Yamaha etc. Sounds and you can make your own synth with unlimited tracks, polyphony and sequences and put them into song mode. You can work out of the box and directly into any daw including their own or you can inside of the box. Just a thought for anyone not wanting to spend the absurd amount of money on these big synths that you have to wait for updates on. Make your mono synths poly and vice versa. Edit every sound with all wave shapes and LFOs plus effects and ADSR. I've seen the light so to speak and it's helped me get over the GAS (i just learned that term not too long ago) for a while. Creating the new sounds off of what I already have is fun and sometimes tedious. But if I come up with something cool, I can save it and bring it back up at will.
