    Tyler Gregory Okonma (born March 6, 1991), better known as Tyler, the Creator, is an American rapper, record producer, and music video director. He rose to prominence as the leader and co-founder of the alternative hip hop collective Odd Future and has rapped on and produced songs for nearly every Odd Future release. Okonma creates all the artwork for the group's releases and also designs the group's clothing and other merchandise.
    After releasing his debut album Goblin under XL Recordings in April 2011, Okonma signed a joint venture deal for him and his label Odd Future Records, with RED Distribution and Sony Music Entertainment. Following that he released his second studio album Wolf, which was met with generally positive reviews and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 selling 90,000 copies in its first week.
    His third studio album, Cherry Bomb, was released in 2015, debuting at number four on the US Billboard 200. It received positive criticial reviews but a polarized reception from fans. In 2017, he released his fourth studio album, Flower Boy, to widespread acclaim. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, becoming his highest-charted album to date, and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
    In 2011, Okonma started the clothing company Golf Wang, and in 2012, he began hosting an annual music festival named the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. He runs his own streaming service named Golf Media; it contains original scripted series from Okonma himself and the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival is annually streamed there.
    Wolf is a concept album that features a continuous story of characters Wolf, Sam and Salem. Therapist character Dr. TC makes his last appearance on a Tyler album on the final track "Lone". The story presented in Wolf has been said to link to Tyler's two previous projects, with debates occurring on whether Wolf comes chronologically before or after Goblin.
    Wolf was released on April 2, 2013 by Odd Future Records and RED Distribution under Sony Music Entertainment. It featured guest appearances by Frank Ocean, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Left Brain, Hodgy Beats, Pharrell, Casey Veggies and Erykah Badu. The album was produced solely by Okonma, except for the final track "Lone". Along with the lead single "Domo23", music videos were filmed for "Bimmer", "IFHY" and "Jamba". Upon release, the album was met with generally positive reviews and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 90,000 copies in its first week.

    Tyler and Odd Future were doing things in the the early 2010s that have become normalized now. They were one of the first music groups to break into the music industry using the internet, he started to blend punk rock and rap before the sound cloud rappers from today even using similar elements like distorting instruments in songs, he rapped about his depressive feelings which is similar to the emo rap that is becoming more common today, he was involved in the fashion world, he broke the traditional rap standards by making alternative music and he had a strong social media presence. Tyler doesn’t get any credit for being innovative or ahead of his time in hip hop culture or any credit for being an entrepreneur at such a young age

    • @2099vision
      @2099vision Před 5 lety +27

      as much as i love tyler, i’d have to disagree with you on some stuff. many rappers were involved in the fashion world before tyler (kanye, pharrell, cam’ron, etc.) and most rappers have rapped about depressive feelings 😂 going back to biggie or a tribe called quest. and even soulja boy broke into the music scene using the internet before tyler

    • @bahji
      @bahji Před 4 lety +4

      i agree with you on some stuff but there’s a lot of things wrong, there’s no aspect of punk in this album at all, at least in the rock punk version, & soulja boy was the first to break onto music with internet !

      @@eckstra8392 NGL, I will admit I kinda wanna see what would've happened if Tyler refined his OG sound and what that would be like, but then we never would've gotten Wolf, Cherry Bomb, or Flower Boy. I also think it's very possible that there was just nowhere left to go for Tyler after Goblin with his OG sound.

    • @flowr7068
      @flowr7068 Před 3 lety +1

      Because it feels forced. Tyler himself said that after Cherry Bomb he started making more mainstream type of music because its appealing to the masses (Flowerboy and Igor). And i understand why he did that. Cherry Bomb is his favourite album he ever made, its the true representation of Tyler, and everyone hated on it, and it really hit him when people said they dont like it, because in a sense they are basically saying that they dont like HIM. Thats why we want old Tyler back. Wolf Gang for live suckas

    Wolf was fun as hell because it showed how Tyler was just growing, not just as an artist but also a person. Everything, from the continuation of the storyline to the overall sound and tone of the album was a big step up from the kid growling on grimy beats about raping Goldilocks and editing it. He actually seemed vulnerable for once.

    Hey man, you mention a few bands/artists in this video which have also transformed as much as Tyler. You mentioned Pink Floyd as one of them, now I could never really get into them, but I would love too see a video from you about their transformation as a band because it’s such a relevant band still today.

    I love this video, BUT I strongly disagree with cherry bomb being a “detour” in his music career. It’s still my favorite album by him. It’s actually the album the got me to listen to the rest of his music, simply because the theme of that album is “there is no theme”. It’s literally just the ups and down of how music can make you feel. And the imperfect mixing between vocals and instrumentals gives it more the of that live performance feeling! We got a good handful of softer songs from him in that album, which I think is a BIG gateway to his last 2 albums. (This is my opinion)
