Stock nuts on my '16 wheels got swollen in the southern heat and when I had a flat, my iron wouldn't fit it. Eventually got replacements, but when I called AAA (which I HATED), I had to tell the guy "yeah my nuts got swollen"
    Worth it.

Learned this the hard way a month ago when trying to replace the front pads on my Focus ST. Had to hammer on the socket for all 10 lugs and used an impact wrench to get them off. A few got stripped and the solution just ended up being to continue to mangle the chrome cap to get at the steel nut underneath.
A 30 minute start to finish job turned into a 5 hours over two nights.

Had those two piece lug nuts on my GT350 immediately changed them, now I’ve got to change them on my GT500! Why Ford why!😡

Also don’t buy el cheapo lugs nuts or the tuner style for the factory PP wheels. The OEM designed them with a wide seat and I wouldn’t run anything that doesn’t have that same contact area on the seat, especially considering the high torque spec. I replaced the crummy factory ones that were starting to swell with some nice Gorilla one piece lug nuts.

Just changed mine today on a 2018 f150 … there was like 7 of them that were a pain to take off; good thing the tire shop caught it on time n didn’t get stranded on the road… order online one solid piece n did it at home took me some time not to damage the rim. As far as swelling I think it’s not so much corrosion but heat or( temperature difference) and impact tools causing this but it is a horrible design that’s Ford cutting corners on materials. But recommended to change them as soon as one goes bad!

One of the first things I replaced was those cheezy two piece lug nuts. Hate to be stuck on the road and not be able to change a tire.

Do a video about unilug and off set lug washers. Way to many opinions about how, and why, or why not, use them.

I feel like addressing the different seat styles is more important. This is usually the most dangerous problem. IE spherical vs tapered vs bulge vs flat etc.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people I've met with failures due to using a tapered nut on a wheel that uses a spherical seat.

Helpful video! Of course, I'm another sucker/Ford beta-tester. (tech tip: if you can do the video inside a garage, on a less windy day, or with a wind muffler on your mic it'll help a lot.)

Any suggestions on best place to get quality colored lug nuts? Like purple? Not turner type.

Lugs are also made from different materials. Most OE lugs are actually made from zinc which is why they use the capped lugs because zinc doesn't look good over time. Using hardened steel or aluminum lugs leads to more cross threading and stud damage. Cheaper lugs don't tend to have the best threads either.

What are you suppose to use at the end of the 6 spline a torque ratchet?

  • @chamberrrs

So those spline drive lug nuts can be used in place of oem lug nuts even though the conical part is shorter?

Those spline / locking lugs don't add much security. Thiefs just hammer a 12pt socket or a extractor socket. Extractor socket sets are $25 and remove all kinds of "security" lug nuts.

So the chrome part broke off while I was removing my lugnut and the the tip is still on the wheel. Does anybody know how to remove the piece that’s still attached to the rim?
