I'm not a fan at all of the trend of adapting animated classics to live action just *because*. It feels like people don't respect animation as a medium and reeks of the 'animation is for kids' nonsense. However, that alone isn't enough to dismiss it or say it's terrible for the sake of it. From time to time, it works. Admittedly, Netflix doesn't have a great track record with anime or the like, but it has also done a number of truly incredible adaptations. How do you feel about what we've seen of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko?? I am cautiously optimistic! Do you still feel it just doesn't need to be made? What are you excited for potentially?

The armoúr of the Fire Nation changed colour throughout the show as well. In the beginning, it was the dark-reddish that's seen in Zuko's shoulders and then as the show progressed the armour became a darker shade of black. My guess is that it contrasted better with the red as you see the colour scheme in the civilian clothing where Fire Nation people often wore red with a black tunic.
The red is also in the lining of the armour sections to break it up. I guess it was made that way to make it more calming to look at since it was black on black then on screen it would look horrible.

I get that bit I also think too much red would be too cartoonish. The idea is to be accurate while making it look realistic and good. They are going to have to tone some things back. E.g. the scar he has isn’t like the one in the series but it still looks good and is accurate regarding what’s important

Yeah...because what they wore in the animation also looked like costumes. There's no way to make real life articles of clothing like that, look like clothes. No matter what, it's gonna look like cosplay. Period. Either they don't wear things that look like what's in the show and it looks "wrong", or they do wear what was in the show and it looks "wrong".
How "lived in" or "worn" any of it looks is irrelevant. If they look as if they're used, then they just look like costumes from a thrift store. They will never look like everyday clothes...ever.

With the scar, I've been told by some burn scar ppls online that they really wish his scar had more texture and actually deformed his eyes like a real burn scar. You only see that kind of realism in scars with villains, so it would be nice to see it for a character that will be redeemed and become good without the scars being removed or changed.

Yea, in order for something to transfer successfully to a live action screen, it has to be more realistic. The clothes may lose color, but they should look functional. With Zuko's scar, I'll have to see how it looks on the actor's whole face. I know it's impossible to make it look the same as it was in animation, but it does look not as extensive. In the original show, Zuko's eye itself was affected (it was forcibly squinted), his ear was shrunken; it looked like a raised scar tissue with contracture-it looks like, well, the result of a burn.
The lighting is the other thing that looks strange-it's very flat, but in the opposite way to the abomination. It looks almost too bright. It looks too unreal. I think this is a lot due to the fact that they are stills rather than dynamic shots.

It's hard to tell with his helmet on, but Zuko's scar looks a little small. In the animated series it goes down his cheek to as low as about his nose. It also goes back to cover his ear which is a plot point because Zuko sleeps on his side with his good ear facing up so he can sense danger nearby. His scar is his biggest source of shame and it should be a noticeable reminder. If its not big enough it could be comparable to how it wasn't visible in the live action movie

Not everything needs to be gritty and dirty if it is used every day. Laundry exists…particularly if you are in a place where you live and likely have other clothing. Not a ton though so you would do your best to maintain what clothing you have.
Let’s assume that these are the characters at the beginning? Zuko Is a prince on a ship. Someone is doing his laundry and he isn’t doing that much work. Kitara and Soka are in their home village where they would be doing chores like laundry and living a life amongst show, which doesn’t really make things dirty. Aang might be the only one that should be missed because he escaped in a storm and was trapped in a glacier…but it his clothes are utilitarian and made to be laundered with easy it shouldn’t be a big deal.
No one is wearing weirdly impractical fabrics that wouldn’t stand up to daily use. None of these characters have a specific trait that required them to be unkempt…even in undeveloped nations…people keep themselves relatively clean in their day to day lives.

What I’m actually a bit afraid of is that a lot of the humor and lighthearted moments in ATLA were physically based, with the characters standing weirdly, Momo moving really quickly, the funny faces etc. so it may be hard to capture that in live action.

The single most important anecdote that gives me confidence in this series - and I cannot stress enough that this is an unsubstantiated anecdote from an insider and not something that I can prove - is that some of the reshoots that were reported on a while back were done because the cast chemistry developed so amazingly that they were willing to spend what I can only assume was millions of dollars to re-shoot the earliest episodes and make sure that they captured that energy throughout.

Remember, each second of animation will be 24+ frames. Its basically impossible to hand-draw these and even if they went with a pre-rendered model most details would be lost in motion or look completely muddy with motion blur. I’m assuming most of the budget went into fight-coordination and any extra martial arts training for the actors-then it was ALL special effects. Designing and then actually making a bunch of clothes for four fictional cultures in better and more specialized materials would have been pricey if it was spread out amongst even the background actors, so I’m mostly just appreciating the casting choices in the live action translation of their designs (and while they could have just used clothes from the cultures the fictional nations were already BASED ON like the show did, I assume they just really wanted to accentuate the nation differences by adding in more bending and spiritual elements to the designs that would have been hard to animate before, all while still leaning into the original show’s colors). I can see all the added costume details actually looking very nice on paper (like Katara’s new patterns for instance) but the materials they’re working with and the fact that they didn’t want to lose too much of the main characters’ colors definitely didn’t ease the switch ups of media.
All that to say, I 100% agree with you: I’m getting theatre-costume-isle vibes. I think they did the best they could and am just hoping that the costumes get a bit less “pristine” looking as time goes on, otherwise I think I might get distracted by their material a lot lol 😅

I kinda think it fits for his character motivation because he thinks of himself as the village's protector since the adult me are gone to war. I'm mainly thinking of how Sokka was so hard lined about training the kids, treating Aang with a lot of suspicion, building and maintaining watch towers. He was, emotionally really hit when his dad left without him. So, I think it could work, but they'd have to justify it to the audience.

Unless they plan on cutting out the vast majority of the show, they're gonna be releasing episodes for YEARS. Which might break some records for a live action television show.

If they can manage that fantasy feel of the world but in a grounded, practical way there is hope. Got a little Ghost of Tsushima vibe of the teaser: Grounded and with respect for the cultures depicted. So that's positive.
For Bending I hope they understand that it is the practice of moving the energy in an element. That's at least how it looks. It will be hard but if they can nail that I think the show is moving in the right direction. ATLA is such a complicated combination of elements which made people fell in love with it when it first aired.

Color-wise it looks great, it's just the texture effect they had on the animation that's missing. yeah, especially since it‘s canon that benders very frequently look ‚like‘ the element they bend (everyone who sees zuko knows that he‘s fire nation, aang convincingly looks like no other character, and it‘s mentioned in Kyoshi that the waterbenders have to change their eye color with medicine if they go undercover)

@@silmaril8989 Colores contact lenses will almost always look weird, sadly. Our irises are concave, and so they catch light in a very particular way and the pupil contracts/expands with light. However, contact lenses sit on top of the eye, they're a flat surface and they obscure the pupil's changes. That's why characters wearing them tend to look uncanny and they look bad on 3/4 and profile perspectives.

That's a great bit of worldbuilding that makes a lot of sense for the Water Tribe, and I hope that shows that they are going to be looking more closely at Inuit culture for the Water Tribe in the live action. As it is, between the various cultures that the nations of ATLA take inspiration from, Inuit culture really got the short end of the stick, despite the importance of the Water Tribe to the story.

  • @Chris-ib8oi

Skeptical but excited. Like, smaller budget hopefully means there's fewer hands on the project from people who are more interested in ROI than ATLA. There will always be some of that, but Im willing to hope.
I had originally written the whole thing off after hearing the creators left. However, I haven't really examined that before. You're right that it takes a village to animate, and that their leaving the show doesn't mean disavowing it.
I've seen stories on Twitter of like wanting to age up the cast and even something about sex scenes. Which... Ick. But I've seen similar inane shit from execs on any project where the cast talk. Something interesting that's just occured to me is that in theory dirty clothing could be cleaned pretty easily and often using both water or air and earthbending; water would soak and wash material, air could blast debris off/out of material, and earth could be used to pull dirt and maybe dust out of material. In this case, I think it wouldn't be too surprising to see decently clean clothing, as many people are commenting about them looking too clean. I get where that's coming from, but I wouldn't be surprised if often in practice we don't get that effect or there may be reasoning as to why that can be the case.
In fact, as you point out these shots may well be quite early on in the season, in which case it may be reasonable the clothing doesn't look "worn in" yet so to speak. If Katara and Sokka haven't been fighting anyone, Aang hasn't been fighting anyone, and Zuko's been on a ship training but not seeing real action for some time, maybe that makes sense.

When people say 'too clean', it's more about the fact it LOOKS like a prop, and kind of cheap. Clean in the way hard plastics and acrylics look clean. Like the types of materials and some of the styling (the end of aang's cape being tied to his arms for some reason for instance. Like you really couldn't just sew a spot together if you wanted it to not fly up?) aren't something a regular person would wear in their daily life

    • @Colopty
      @Colopty Před 11 měsíci +9

Them looking too clean is more about the lack of weathering than about lack of dirt. It's fine if they look like the outfit has been recently washed, real people do wash their clothes regularly after all, but they should look like clothes that have been worn for some time rather than something they just picked up at the local supermarket. That means some threads out of place here and there, maybe make the furry parts of the water tribe outfits not quite as perfectly fluffed up, maybe the dye has been sun bleached a little. It doesn't need to look battle worn, just worn. Also aim for making them out of materials the characters have available, no matter how convenient polyester is.

    • @Temperans
      @Temperans Před 11 měsíci +4

@@Colopty Basically, the goal is not to look dirty or as if the clothes are super old. But that they halve indeed been used and washed for sometime and you can tell they aren't brand new.

I think bending is a lot harder to nail in terms of performance than it is to animate the effects, especially for an experienced team of vfx artists. There's going to be a lot of vfx to worry about beyond just the bending, so that's kind of concerning in terms of budget and time constraints, but their budget per episode is pretty high, so there's hope. The Toph concept short fight scene that their stunt team posted looked really good as far as performance goes, I just hope that's the level of action design that made it to set, and I hope they gave the cast enough time to properly train for it.

Assuming each book has one year between filming, that would mean that Aang’s and Katara’s first kiss will be shot when they’re 14/15 and 17/18/19. I know Katara was always two years older, but I fear it’s going to look really creepy ones the final book is being filmed and we see a 20 year old woman kiss a 16 year old teenager. My biggest nitpick with the costumes, specifically katara and sokka, is that they don't look.. natural. I understand that they're part of a fantasy world + i love the details like kataras loopies being braided and the patterns on her parka look like inuit embroidery, but they don't look embroidered, just stuck on. And as for sokka, his outfit confuses me a bit, namely the metal. Those parts should be made of bone and ivory, but the only part of his outfit meant to be bone is the choker which looks like a block of plastic. I wish for kataras they didn't just stick fur rims on and made the whole thing look fur like, and for sokkas.. idk. But it doesn't look right, and with how colourful and detailed inuit clothing can be i really hoped for a bit more. I understand these are promo shots so im not gonna be too nit picky about how clean they look, but I will say that they don't look possible in the atla world. I think the costumes look good overall. I like how they tried to be faithful to the original appearances, like with Aang’s orange shawl, Zuko’s helmet, and of course Katara’s iconic hair loopies. In the nonexistent movie, “Aang” looked like a white kid wearing a generic Buddhist monk outfit, and “Katara” and “Sokka” looked like wildlings from GOT with the regular brown parkas they were wearing at the beginning.
That said, I do hope the costumes undergo some kind of chemical treatment to make them look more weathered/textured. The costumes themselves look great, but very new. However, these pics seem to be promo pics rather than actual stills (note the saturated color, polished costumes, characters’ dramatic poses/expressions, and the complete lack of background characters or action). Hopefully the costumes in the actual show will look a little more worn.
But if the show itself is good overall, I can definitely ignore some overly pristine costumes.

I'm skeptical but excited :) The original series will always have a special place in my heart and I just hope this Netflix version will be good enough to bring the story even more attention because this series totally deserves it!

I think part of the color thing that could really work is that their clothes are not 'natural found colors' and are almost cartoony bright so it gives us that grounding in the animated show but their environment is more 'naturally colored' which would give grounding in reality. And it's really not that big of a change in what we see all around us anyway. Our clothes can often be extremely bright and if you look at other cultures, as he pointed out with some of the monk's garments, they can be insanely bright.

Willow's commentary was insightful and sophisticated. I have never before had such thoughts revealed unto me.

It’s hard to explain but seeing characters that I expect to be animated look like real people kinda gives me uncanny valley vibes. It’s kinda like AI art where it’s too perfect to actually be perfect. Still hyped tho.

At least you can do that at all. With the movie there was no fooling anyone 😂

I agree with alot of these comments. the design of the costumes are good (hopefully that is a special outfit on sokka), with good colors, but it all looks a bit pristine. Like they just pulled it out of the box and its never been worn or washed before. It needs to look like its existed for more than a day

I hope, for god sake, they do one key thing. Make the actors watch at least the first episode of the show. You learn so many key things there. General personalities, interactions between the characters, how to say the character's DAMN NAMES RIGHT!
