    What SpaceX Just Did With Mechazilla's Chopstick Is Unusual!
    May - the month we've been anticipating for a grand Starship launch has arrived.
    Join us on today's episode of Alpha Tech to find out what SpaceX has done to prepare for the next Starship launch, particularly the mind-blowing things they've done with Mechazilla's chopsticks.
    What SpaceX Just Did With Mechazilla's Chopstick Is Unusual!
    Preparations are ramping up. At Starbase right now, it's a picture of the beauty of the tireless efforts of SpaceX's workers and engineers.
    Upgrades are continuously taking place on the launch tower and launch pad. This shows the importance of increasing redundancy and reducing the time needed for refurbishment between launches.
    More importantly, SpaceX is focusing on these new designs especially to prepare for the Booster recovery process.
    What SpaceX Just Did With Mechazilla's Chopstick Is Unusual!
    For the Orbital Launch Mount (OLM), maintenance has been done where SpaceX raised the back of the Quick Disconnect (QD) to replace the methane pipes and clamps. The fire suppression system was then tested to ensure its effectiveness.
    And notably, the Chopsticks-the complex mechanism responsible for catching the Booster with Mechazilla's arms-have undergone an impressive series of tests from April 24th to April 30th.

    I still believe it would be best to have a second tower just for catching the booster and ship until it is fully developed . So right now you have damage at take off and could take a tower offline and if catching it may cause damage also and then the tower will be down longer before next flight can happen. Makes sense to me.

    Since they are planning in the future to catch a landing booster or starship in flight. It's a much more difficult maneuver than a simple static pickup and stack or unstack. So they are testing out the maximum limits and capabilities of the current chopsticks.

    For a person that likes things simple, this catch the falling rocket idea may end up being a overcomplicated disaster...4 unfolding legs seems a lot simper too me, right about now.

      Legs add weight.

      @@chrisdsouza8685 so complexity adds uncertainty... falcon 9 works good don't change it if it works. Time will tell. Elons going run out of money and it'll all be a scrap heap.

      Yeah and get rid of half your payload from the weight.. 👎🏻 it's not complicated it's two arms closing to a fixed width while the rocket gently hovers to a fixed target.. honestly easier than falcon 9 on a barge

    Yes, so unusual I can't believe that NASA wasn't shocked!!! LOL!!!

    I think to achieve rapid relaunching they will need to use more towers and accept repairs that take days or weeks to complete are going to be a thing.

    Instead of catch arms that have lots of mass, think about catch cables and spaceship hooks. Analogous to aircraft carrier hooks and cables to land aircraft on carrier decks.

    Why not use the steer grid fins to catch SS? Have them float horizontal except when needed in flight. Would make a more reliable catch. Easily engineered not to suffer damage and save weight without the other lift points?.

    You might be able to stop the oscillation and the vibration of the chopsticks with a separate dampening cylinder or multiple cylinders. I wouldn't worry to much about the speed of closer of the chopsticks. You have to close at the speed needed to catch the unit. I like the idea of the horizontal tank farm. Great Episode.

  • @kaiwheeler64
    @kaiwheeler64 Před měsícem +1

    I wonder would it benefit if the chopstick movement is timed so that the resulting oscillation of each is in phase with the other?

    How about fitting out a Falcon 9 with fins, and use it's proven landing abilities, and test the software and hardware on it. I thought incremental steps were the way SpaceX iterates, the ships will need flexibility for proposed missions, get the software right then scale up for hardware applications.

    • @krashdown5814
      @krashdown5814 Před měsícem

      Eventually one of Elon's TBMs will have to go to Luna for testing and construction in a dusty environment, once modified for optimal Mars construction it will then be easier to send such weight there. A next gen Starship with two strap on Falcon 9s launched from Florida will provide the flexibility needed for the two bases, as well as any missions required to move or destroy such targets as Apophis etc.

      Fins add drag and weight then add extra strength for supporting legs and you’ll add a lot more weight.

    It is exhausting to watch how many changes happen in just a week. SpaceX is amazing. I’m such a fan of the people who work there. It seems to be more of a calling than a job. It’s amazing just how good they are.
