    As a black male I can honestly say I have honestly been approached by security in the parking lot or just outside the store asking to see a receipt countless times. And I'm a clean cut guy, basically a computer nerd so I never sagged my pants and ect. I'm medically retired from the Army due to injuries sustained in combat. It happened before I joined the Army at the age of 19, happened while I was in the army a few times while in uniform. It's happened since I've been out of the Army. I'm from Chicago and have lived from the northeast to the southwest and being stopped by security has happened to me all the US and Canada. As a black male it's one of those things you just learn to live with and hope it changes.

      I'm an network engineer was talking to my black coworker about some stuff and he mentioned how every time he gets pulled over 'the cop puts you in the back of the car or has you sit on the curb when he runs your license.' We live in Portland Oregon not "Shitkick Alabama" or "Sisterfuck Tennessee". I was clenching my jaw so hard my head started hurting. Same place, different worlds.
      I've been pulled over dozens of times in my life, never had to step out of the car. Never been hassled by a security guard...
      He dresses better than me and doesnt own a hoodie for his own safety. Meanwhile when I dress up I wear my clean hoodie.... most of the time unless its at walmart. Crazy country. I couldnt handle being black with all those relentless little things you have to think about just to not get shot by cops.

He thought I exaggerated my stories when I shared with him about racial incidents, until we went to Wal-Mart. We bought something large that did not fit in a bag and other things. He held the large item and I was behind with the basket and receipt. As he passes the greeter, she smiles and tells him to have a great day. As I approach, the smile leaves and she asks me to show her my receipt. I yell to my husband, as he exits the double doors, "Babe! I'll meet you at the car! She needs to see my receipt but I dont want to keep from getting to the car undisturbed....without your receipt." He walked back and looked at her , shook his head and said, "unbelievable. " She ignored him.

    • @Xineal
      @Xineal Před 7 lety +18

      Oh, absolutely, I've made the comparison myself several times. I could hardly give a personal account of what it was like for my parents coming over, since I wasn't born in the thick of it, but they overcame a lot to ensure that their children made it through to college. The journey was extremely dangerous, my family had been separated for several years in the process, and they had to deal with many prejudices and stereotypes. There were similar fears of us stealing jobs or being hostile towards "American" morals/safety.

    • @fluidthought42
      @fluidthought42 Před 7 lety +18

      Xineal The most visible parallel I've seen is the fear that "the enemy" will sneak in. With the Vietnamese it was communists, with Syrians it's the terrorists. Of course, with both the fears are without basis.
      People forget the lessons of the past, and treat every new issue as if it were never faced before. America is strengthened by its openness to refugees, not by its fear of them.

    • @fluidthought42
      @fluidthought42 Před 7 lety +17

      Interestingly enough, the father of American Anthropology Franz Boaz got his start by measuring the skulls of Irish immigrants and their decedents to disprove popular racialist ideas.
      Specifically, he proved that the Irish did not _inherently_ have smaller skulls -- thus according to the thought of the day they would have less capability for intelligence -- but rather that smaller skulls were caused by malnourishment during formative years. He proved this by comparing the skull sizes of both first generation immigrants and second generation immigrants, the second having larger skulls, with skull size approaching American norms the more generations lived in America. The more generations deep the family, the better off the family got, the less their children starved.
      I'm just a Boaz fanboy geeking out over here...

      Tamara G every black child up to the early 2000 has been taught that. I got yelled at for coming home without a bag. It’s funny now but thinking the way a black mother thinks... sending her child to the store and getting a call they’re in jail or dead over not having a bag and being handcuffed or accidentally shot as you reach for the receipt ... I never did it again. Even now I request for a bag when asked. Sometimes I hesitate to say no thanks then one brief thought of my dear departed mother and I say yes I’d like a bag.

    • @PrimeraEspadaStark

      Afaf Benhara It is a Rich, white male class that established the hierarchy in this country. Women and minorities are both oppressed, but women are not a minority, they're half the country. Getting the "right to vote" on paper, and a black president doesn't not undo the effects of slavery, Jim Crow and a continually racist legal/justice system oppressing black and brown people, so you shouldn't try and lump all men together as if we're equally privileged compared to men. We're all in this together, against the rich upper class oligarchs that control the courts, government and business world, mostly old white men.

      Personally, I was like, "I never thought of that, but that totally makes sense...which is sad." We're white, so we don't need to think of that. I believe the term for it is "the invisibility of privilege." With respect to most parts of your identity (race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, etc.), if you're in the privileged group, you don't have to think much about that aspect of yourself or how it affects people's view of you. That's just how it is.

    There are a lot of Europeans in the comments who are surprised at the bag/receipt thing, and are asking "what is wrong with the US?" But I live in the UK and was also taught the bag thing. I always get followed around stores in London. I may not be worried about getting shot, but shop owners and security always suspect you are a thief regardless of how you dress, how friendly you make yourself look, etc. I never put my hands in my pocket while in a store. If I think I may need my phone, I make sure to take it out of my pocket before I enter.

Thanks family, I guess... now I want to know how many times that actually saved me hassle... or even my life.

    The bag thing is so true. my mom taught me that when I was like 7 years old. I work at a store, and my co-workers always give me crap because even if I'm just buying a pack of gum, I ask for a bag. I also get nervous walking through those electronic alarm systems at the entrance and exits of stores. If someone is approaching one the same time as me, I pause for a few seconds and let them go in front of me. There's been times when other people walk through the same time as me and trigger the alarm, but I'm the only one that gets stopped. Being followed around the store while an obviously shady white person is left alone is also annoying.

    Yep. It's something I practice myself. I *always*, almost without exception, get a bag and a receipt when I purchase something.
    The only exception is when I am in uniform (I'm an EMT) and I am buying food in-between calls. But even then, I *always* get a receipt and carry it in full view.
    I also make sure that my hands never goes into my pockets inside of a store except to get my wallet at the register.
    I'd say it's exhausting but honestly it's just normal at this point in my life. (Though it does still get irritating some.)

      Maddy Hall I agree, and it's so sad. As a Liberian, I really didn't connect it to being black. I have been stopped a lot of times but I thought it was because I am African, or because it's me....you know, I have been taking it personal. Little did I knw that it's a race thing and so it's because I am black. I almost got in trouble at Walmart like that with my cooler. I live in Arizona and we carry water around during the summer. So coming out of Walmart with my new purchases, which were even bagged, and receipts for them I had displayed, the security insisted that I produce a receipt for my cooler. Mainwhile it wasn't a new cooler. I had bought it from Fallas sometimes ago and had been using it for sometimes. So I tried to explain that it's my used cooler and even pointed at others who went by with similar coolers because of the summer. They said mine looked clean, therefore they were not sure. I said but I wash it every morning that's why it's clean. Good thing, when I opened it for them to see, there was cold water in it half way, then the securities were embarrassed, and let me go. That's just one instance. Believe me, I could go on and on here citing instances, bt I don't want to bore you.
      So I really agree with you that Roy last talk abt the bag is not funny. It's sad.

Not only was it as funny as ever, the minorities not available to the previous cast are taken advantage of in the best way possible.
      All the new presenters of the show are hilarious just like the old. Roy is just one example. If you find the new show lacking, that's too bad. One might miss Jon Stewart and the rest but I'll be able to say one day that I miss Roy, Trevor, Jordan and others when they leave.
