    Just as everyone else has done, I suggest checking out the BV206, that little Swedish star of the 80s. Loads of Swedish soldiers learned to drive and abuse them and there are lots of clips on the net with people driving those little 206es through impossibly swampy forests, deep snow, loose sand ald loads of other dirty and challenging types of terrain!

    Wow! I didn't know that a civilian version of the BAe Hägglunds BvS 10 exists. The power train and track system and probably the whole chassis appears to be the same.
    The smaller ones with 5 roadwheels per track are the older model Bandvagn 206.
    Both models are made for the most extrem terrain and they are fully amphibious. I can't wait to see how the units supplied to Ukraine will do in the extreme autumn mud.
    I'm sure they are marketed in the USA too. The US Army is operating Bandvagn 206.

      If you put the draining plugs in, the old BV was good on water...
      One stupid officer in the Norwegian infantry ordered a driver to go over a small lake.
      The driver tryed to explain that he needed to innstal the plugs, he was told to shut upp and drive.
      The driver did as he was told :-)

    This vehicle is derived from a series of tracked vehicles vehicles made by swedish company Hägglunds. They have made military and civilian vehicles since the 50’s, many with the same concept as the TL6. These Hägglund vehicles are being used all over the world, including the US. They also currently make the CV90 which is being used in Ukraine.

    I think that the second vehicle they drive up to is a Hägglund's Bandvagn 206 (BV206). It's primarly used by the military since 1980, but also on the civilian market in many different configuration. Originally built in plastic as the one in the video but also armoured and larger versions exists with different designations. Even used by the US Army and National Guard.

    I remember being tripped out years ago when I first saw those walking tree loppers. They were on six independent legs and had a tree-stripping attachment. It could walk sideways up steep terrain and selectively pick a tree, cut it at the base, and then strip the branches off. I immediately wanted one...and still do.

    We have a Finnish military version of this from Sisu trucks. And it's called sisu nasu na-140 bt. And all the 4 tracks are driven and the way it actually steers is from the middle of it, from the swivel joint. Just like those big wheel loaders. They go really well in any terrain. The Sisu Nasu also floats. So it can actually go in the water.

      This is of course based on the Bandvagn 206. The bandvagn is of course more capable. But this vehicle isn’t trying to fill the same niche as the Bandvagn. This is an all day workhorse with more emphasis on ergonomics than the Bandvagn. I thought I’d suggest this because of the love Ian has for European trucks.

Earlier this year the Service deployed a number of the membership (firefighters, among others) to Canada to help fight the fires in BC and Alberta. One thing to know is that the 202( the version before the 206) and the 206 has so low ground pressure that they can go across swamps that you cant walk across because you will sink and get stuck. There was also a version, 2062, that is a 206 but without the hardtop and it carries either a 9cm AT gun or a TOW launcher. Later they had lots of other versions with AA, CC, Medivac, Radar etc etc.They were used by the whole Swedish army but most noticably in the north were they could move in the snowy and swampy terrain not having to stick to roads. For the last 20-25 years there are versions with armour, most common version is the BVS10. I think Sweden had about 5000 of the 206 and now they have about 6-700 of the BVS10/BV410

    The big plus with tracks is that it levels out the pressure on the ground so you don't sink so far in, like on snow, you sink much more in with wheels compared to belts as the weight of the vehicle is leveled more all across the tracks instead of just a few spots like the wheels holds all the weight on the bottom of the tires.

    This type of tracked vehicle were originally made for unparalelled offroad capability and to combat trenches made to stop tanks.
    When it drives down in the trench, the rear tracks puches the front up the other side, and the the front pulls the back up, making it one of the fastest vehicles to travel battlefields and combatzones. At least back in the day when it first were constructed for the Swedish armed forces, amongst other.

    The thing doesn't do much damage to the ground since the tracks spread the weight over a large surface area.
    Just to show how effective tracks are at reducing ground pressure:
    A Toyota 4Runner (1.7 to 2 metric ton SUV) exerts 25 psi of ground pressure,
    an M1A2 Abrams (70 to 80 metric ton tank) only exerts 15 psi of ground pressure.

    That looks like a great truck :) It doesn't even look that big, mainly because the cab is normally used on the Volvo FL. That one is mainly for smaller trucks used in (European) urban environments, where efficiant use of space and agility counts more than anywhere else. This tracked vehicle just looks like a relatively small cab with tracks and a trailer with tracks. It does look great though, and it really looks like it could go anywhere.
    The lifting cab is standard on European cabover trucks though, that doesn't really surprise me much on this TL6.

An aircooled all terraine vehicle that started production back in 1958. Still many are operational in really tuff places in canada, nordic scandinavia and even antartica (favorite snow vehicle of the australians). Best tracked vehicles and best trucks in the world are made in sweden.

  • @35manning
    @35manning Před 9 měsíci

    Try driving those rubber tracks over hard rocks.
    They are good for soft surfaces like snow, soft flat sand and some mud.
    The problems happen when they encounter hard sharp edges, sloppy mud or need to climb steep hills in loose material.
    Because they float above most materials, they can't dig in and get traction on the deeper more compacted material.
    If you look at bulldozer and excavator tracks, Grousers are the little blades that stick out of the track pads and bite into the ground.
    And you'll find track pads with a single tall grouser, or with two short grousers etc.
    Less grousers that are bigger will dig deeper and get more traction.
    They will also cause much more damage to the ground and can even rip up and destroy concrete.
    Unfortunately, sometimes a wheeled vehicle is better at offroad tasks than a tracked vehicle.
    So whilst they look cool and can do things that a wheeled vehicle can't, they are limited in what they can do.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc Před 9 měsíci +1

      Mostly right, but these kind of rubber tracks arent as limited as you might think, especially in this configuration with the articulated and powered "trailer".
      Except pure, slippery and smooth rock formation, they are pretty darn good, and putting aside that, they got the advantage over tires mostly everywhere . Downside for their intended usage mainly being they wear a lot on the paved road and you cant go very fast either, maybe 70km/h.

    • @magnuslundstedt2659
      @magnuslundstedt2659 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The work realy well on rocks too. The downside is fuel consumption and top speed.
      I have benen ridning the 206 over every surfare you can think of, bogs that you sink down to your waist if you step out and snow meters deep. They have limitations due to wheeled weichles, but there is NO place you can take any wheeled weichle where this one cant get further.

      + The first ATV (Articulated Terrain Vehicle) was the Volvo BV 202, introduced in the 1960s. It's still occasionally used today since it has a ground pressure so low it can traverse snowy and swampy terrain no other vehicle can possibly manage.
      + The nest generation was the Hägglund BV 206 launched in 1976. It has a much higher ground pressure than the BV 202 but still much lower than any other vehicle. I've seen a demonstration video where they drove over a man's hand without causing any damage or even pain.
      + The third generation is the BAE Hägglund BvS10. Unlike the BV 202 and 206, Hägglund does not offer the BvS10 on the civilian market themselves. Instead they've teamed up with STV AB who made the TL 6 we see in this video. The TL 6 is basically a Volvo truck cabin mounted on a BvS10 chassis.
      ----
      Two other ATVs that should be mentioned are:
      + Sisu Nasu. A Finnish variant of the BV 206, longer than the original.
      + Vityaz. A Russian beast. It doesn't have the cross country capabilities of the Sedish and Finnish vehicles but it can carry up to 30 tons.

    Ian, have you ever looked up the SHERP off road vehicle on CZcams. It is originally a Russian product, but from the videos I looked at some years back, is very popular in USA. Sold and distributed by local assembly manufacture, I presume from imported kit parts.
    It runs on huge balloon tyres very low pressure, that allow it to go virtually anywhere, even floats on water on those big fat tyres. Skid steer principle.
    DO LOOKUP THE "SHERP" seems a real fun go anywhere vehicle, that I understand is affordable and locally, USA, supported.
    An addition, there are a range of vehicles by ARGO, with 4, 6, 8 wheel even tracked, open top floatable ATV vehicles. But I just noted a vehicle similar to the SHERP, but larger. Also like that on 4 large balloon tyres, ARGO CENTAUR.
