First rule of buying anything off Facebook Marketplace or Craiglist is to never pay up front for someone to "hold" the item for you. Also, don't send money expecting someone to deliver the item. Always in person. Always in cash. Preferably at a police station or a well trafficked area. Never at night. If you are selling something, be careful about having people come to your home. I have been in business buying and selling high end tools for 24 years. I have seen some very sketchy situations. I always travel armed and usually bring my big boy with me. He's a 165 pound Great Dane that is very protective. So far, I have never had anything really bad happen!

Me and my mom just got scammed out of $950. It was a room for rent and that was the deposit I was skeptical but my family has been homeless for a bout a year now and on and off since 2016 so yea my mom was desperate and gave up the money right away. The next day we tried to call to see when we can move our stuff in but he didn’t answer multiple calls and eventually blocked my mom on Facebook. Karma will get that f***er!!

Wait the guy is a squatter too or did not pay his rent? We need better laws as he racked up $12,000 in back rent before getting evicted. The grifts continue as judges let these guys run amok.
Sounds like around 6 months worth at $2k per month, just roughly based on the picture of the house and the area. He could have been evicted before that under normal circumstances. If a landlord let him stay that long without paying rent, then that was the landlord's fault.
Unless the timing fit, which it seems it did, with a Federal block on evictions. That thing where the Federal government gave a blank check to people like this guy, allowing to him to not pay rent for months while the landlord still had to pay all their bills and property taxes.
Why would you pay before recieveing the item?
You find a really really good deal, something you know almost never happens, and the seller says they are selling to the first person to pay. Do you wait to pay and lose the item to someone else? You pay now or you don't get the deal of the year on an item that you want/need. It is pretty straightforward and some people would succumb to the scam because of the combined urgency and opportunity.

Facebook Marketplace is the safest bet. Offerup, Craigslist are too anonymous. You can't hide your identity on Facebook, and if you do there's no sale going to happen.

Two of the people I graduated with had it all, new cars, boats, houses then when 2008 happened they couldn't even make their mortgage let alone car and toy payments. One problem is you can't contact Facebook with their system. If you want to lodge a complaint or report a scam they tell you to click the link right under the persons name / profile or right under there listing. If the scammer quits his Facebook account and takes his listing down there is no name/profile or listing to click a link to report them. All these links etc.. they show you to get help has you going around in circles never getting to anyone that can help.
FB cares about people only as far as those people equaling revenue and power. Nothing beyond that. FB might care about how you are feeling, but only as far as to use that information about how you are feeling to "provide you with a more enjoyable ad experience". They are more than happy to censor you for expressing a personal opinion but they could care less that they are allowing someone to use their platform to outright steal thousands of dollars from people like you.

I almost didn't believe the video because the narrator of the video made the video seem something The Onion would post.
Never buy something you haven't seen in person, Never go alone always have someone with you if you can't try to meet in a public place. You can always go to a police station too if you can't meet up somewhere safe. Sometimes you have to go at night because its the only time you or the other person is available but always try to visit one another in the day time. There are fishy people out there.

I once ordered 3 chandeliers to repair on local Market Place left the money and they were delivering them. She brought 3 boxes 2 chandis and a box of garbage and took the money. Went home and deleted the post and when I was faster she said it wasn't suppose to be 3 because the 3rd one was still hooked up in her house. She said she would bring it and the money back. Nope and she is a nurse at the Fairbury Hospital. Then when I got her in trouble with MPlace she went to our local fb page and bad mouthed me saying I was nuts. Always always copy the post if you are doing a drop off for money. Market Place will not back you up with a money return if you don't pay online. AND I had to throw her garbage away!!

Always do Cash in person when buying or selling on FB marketplace...none of this leaving money if and when items are "delivered". Just another scam.
Another scam that’s been going on where I live is when people are looking to rent a room or apartment off Facebook marketplace. People were sending in money for “background & credit check” when in reality there was never a room/apartment for rent in the first place. Make sure the property & seller are both legit. Stay safe!
When I was looking to rent an apartment, like 75% of the ads posted on Craigslist were pure scams! They would post a whole house for rent at what seemed like a really good price. But if you look up the address, turns out the house is for sale. The Craigslist scammers would just scour real estate sites for houses and steal beautiful photos to post, pretending to be the landlord. They'd even just copy and paste the descriptions from the real estate listings!
It's disgusting. Most people looking to rent a house with multiple bedrooms are going to be families, so these scammers are targetting people with kids.

This happened to me with a moving company, they asked for a “down deposit” and didn’t show up and didn’t return my money, they lied and said they came out and I didn’t answer🤔 WHO again WHO when moving don’t answer the door when they need the moving company…..BE CAREFUL OUT HERE

Since he defrauded people via online payments, he is guilty of "wire fraud". Wire Fraud is a federal crime, and should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If there are enough complaints against him (most likely in this case), the FTC may refer it to a state or federal authority for investigation and prosecution.
