Thanks. Interesting thought about the megapixels in a medium format negative. Now, I wish I hadn’t traded my M645 Super in.

There's still plenty of good examples out there on the s/hand market. Even though it used a lot more plastic than its M645 predecessors, they seem to have lasted well... :-)

absolutely agree with the bigger is better in all big sensors especially with medium format film better depth perception , controll of depth of field is brilliant

I have a Bronica SQ and shooting slide film it just the best. I got so addicted that I bought a used jobo and develop E6 myself now.

I absolutely _lusted_ after this system when it was new. At some point about a decade ago, I realized I could pick up a complete setup for around $400, or about 10% of its new cost! I’ve had a fairly complete kit ever since, and I love it.
I’m curious about your technique for taking portrait orientation images using the waist level finder? I end up always keeping a prism on mine for just this reason. Something I really like about square format cameras and the RB67 is that I can still use the WLF!

Great review not just of the 645 but of medium format in general. I have a mint Pentax 6x7 with a full set of lenses but it was really only part of my camera collection but I would love to expand its use. When i used it, each image takes about 15 minutes of careful planning, focus and exposure because the cost of each image (only 10 per roll as you said) is $3 US. I used 35mm film for 20 years...even developing b&w negs and prints for my work...but would love to explore this more. One time i took the same subject with my D800 and with the 6x7 from the same angle and similar lighting and the 6x7 isn't just about the massive resolution but i wanted to mention the greater dynamic range of film over most FX sensors which means one has more latitude between highlights and shadows. Also with negative film one should over-expose a bit. Certainly a goal for this year and thanks for the inspiration 🙏🏻

Have always fancied a go with the Pentax 6x7 - especially given the very low prices it can be bought for nowadays... :-)

I've been lusting after a Kowa Six MM... or a Mamiya 645... but I'm intrigued by a 6x7... do you have a short list of favorite 6x7's?

Hello JKLenses. Great video. As someone who started taking pictures as a kid with a camera shooting 6 x 6 film, you have definitely piqued my interest in a Mamiya now that I have retired. Many years ago I got some excellent results shooting weddings with a pair of C330's. Even though the test charts indicated those lenses weren't at the level of the Zeiss for Hasselblad glass, they cost a lot less and produced beautiful images for me.
If you have a moment to reply to two unrelated questions, I'd appreciate it. The first is that since I have received a lot of value from your channel, and I know these videos are time and money consuming to produce, is there a way to contribute to your efforts by sending you a donation? Second, I notice that the Nikon D3 features prominently in many of your lens videos. What is your opinion of using a 12 megapixel camera these days for general recreational photography? I find most of my subjects to be very similar to some of yours as seen in your videos, with the exception of the racing shots, which I don't generally do. I do enjoy shooting informal portraits. Since the prices have dropped so much on D700's and D3's these days, I was thinking of getting one for use with a few AF-D lenses I own. I'm currently using them on a D7000, but would like to be able to use them at their intended angles of view. My purpose would be strictly personal enjoyment. My photo printer at home can produce up to A3+ (13 x 19) prints. What do you think? Finally, thanks for mentioning in another video your use of the Nikon 18-70 zoom on your D7000 as your "walk around" lens. I purchased one for about $60 USD and find it extremely useful on my D7000. Cheers!

Hi! Very many thanks for your kind offer of donation. Perhaps sending a suitable sum to a charity of your choice would be the best route forward and much appreciated… 😊
As you can tell from the videos, I’m a huge fan of the D3s and have used almost nothing else since it was released. If mine exploded tomorrow I would simply buy another one, (a D3s not a D3 btw) enjoying the low prices, as you mention. 12MP seems fine to me, certainly up to and a bit beyond A3 in my experience. Higher MP bodies seem to be largely a bit of marketing misdirection. Without increasing the sensor size they generally reduce pixel size and thus give lower performance in other key areas which are really important to me such as dynamic range, colour depth etc.
I owned a D700 briefly between its release and the release of the D3s. The two cameras have many parts and systems in common but I have become addicted to the D3s’s pro workflow and controls so would find it a wrench to go back. However, if I’m honest, it’s very hard to distinguish pics which I took with the D700 and those with the D3s. At today’s low prices, either body will be fine for almost any kind of photography.
If you are really bothered about making very large prints then I would go for an M645Super! 😊

Unlike 35mm film Medium format 645 and above can rival Digital resolution.
I'd love to put my Hasselblad Digital back on one of these MF cameras.
Although i'm not a big enough masochist to go back to developing my own film...

It is fab to be able to adjust things like exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows etc with just a flick of the mouse on a Lightroom slider! Used to take me hours in the darkroom... :-)

yowch. 7:51 did not age well. Even the most basic bronica 645 is over 300. RIP film body market.
