    I went from an FX9 to an FX3. No regrets. The FX9 slowed me down quite a bit on most shoots so I started using my A7iii quite a lot on certain types of video projects, and often finding myself picking between high quality footage, or easy of use. FX3 is the perfect meeting of the two. It's got all the codecs and bit depth and resolution in the small body. It's really quite crazy.

  • @SpencerStanley
    @SpencerStanley Před 3 lety +15

    I've had my FX6 for about two months now and I absolutely love it. I actually really like the fact that the FX6 barely weighs anything because you can easily throw it on a gimbal. If you have an external monitor on it the weight increase a lot too. I think the FX6 is a much better camera for commercial work and the FX3 might be a better option for run and gun, real estate and wedding shooters. I'd love to have IBIS but I don't think I can go back to non-internal ND filters.

    • @Brian-ss2dp

      @@Brian-ss2dp I HATE swithcing filters. Might be the most annoying thing in the world. I also cant stand X vignetting. It made switching lenses a lot more of a hassle and I would constantly try and use the same lens for shots.

      @@SpencerStanley Me too. I am not sure why but I always feel annoyed. And yes, the vignetting can sneak up in post. I think the internal ND's are going to become increasingly more common, even with mid-range models. Maybe not in 3 years, but in 10, we might see some movement haha

    @WarnerVision Před 3 lety +3

    Thanks for the interesting debate.
    I have the A7Siii and A1. Perfect pair for me. I have the K3M when I need it too. The A1 gives additional options that the A7Siii/FX3 doesn't have, such as Super35 crop if needed, lower second base ISO of 4000 (a sweet spot), fine adjustment of the shutter speed if filming LCD screens and such like, and of course 8K. And the beauty is it has virtually the same button placement and menu as the A7Siii, so feels the same camera to use. Plus the image matches too. The argument that the FX3 has better suited buttons is a moot point, as I customise the buttons how I want them anyway, and I never look at what the labels on the buttons say.
    And to cap it all I love the EVF on both the A7Siii and the A1, I use it all the time for filming when outside, I'd hate to lose that.

    I currently own the Fs7ii and a7siii. Shooting mostly commercial content I am still looking at either the FX9 or 6 but difference being that I work with location sound people fairly regularly where timecode and external monitoring are super important. Still a solid purchase in the fx3 for wedding and smaller content.

  • @talonsix
    @talonsix Před 3 lety +2

    Great perspectives from both Chris and Josh; I'm glad they covered this. It sounded to me like their FX6 issues fall mainly into three categories - lack of IBIS, form factor to some extent, and the firmware.
    I shoot corporates and real estate, so for me the FX6 nicely fills the former role and the A7S3 the latter. The FX6 has a client 'wow' factor that is easy for us gearheads to dismiss as nonsense since all three of these cameras have the same sensor. But when you're charging $$$$$ for a production, having a camera that looks the part is a small factor worthy of consideration. The FX6 not having touch tracking AF and some sort of in-body 3.5mm audio input are real head scratchers, but not deal-breakers for my use cases.
    One weird thing I have noticed is that my FX6's Cinetone is slightly warmer than the A7S3 when balanced on the same target, so matching an a-cam/b-cam interview setup takes a little bit of work in post. I also generally prefer the A7S3 for b-roll for a reason not mentioned: it's subtle and looks like an ordinary camera so people just think you're shooting stills.
    Anyway, just my ramblings as an owner/operator of the FX6 and A7S3. My advice: choose what fits your needs.

    • @chrisbrockhurst
      @chrisbrockhurst  Před 3 lety +2

    The FX3 does have the manual focus override BTW - if you program a button to switch between auto/manual focus, and switch it to manual, and tap to focus it will override it, and as soon as it locks on whatever you tapped, it switched back to manual

      Not sure if the FX3 is the same but on other Sony cameras you can use "AF/MF hold" rather than "toggle" and it will go back to MF after you release the button (if MF is the default). Also works in AF where you can hold MF in and then release to pull focus to AF.

    Came to the same conclusion a month ago. Up until then the FX6 was my wet dream, thicking all the boxes… I think the variable ND held me in the longest.. Ordered the FX3 and focused on flexibility to go really small; fitting the small digital mic from sony along with stere wireless go from Rode - up to a rig with xlr and Ninja V monitoring, the small Sync-e timecode generator etc. Your video made me feel good about my own decissions. I almost returned it but because I couldn't brake my habits form my other Sony cameras. I decided to learn it and stick to it and now It's hard for me to shoot with anything else. Especially because I learned out to shoot with Exposure Indexing which makes exposing a breeze. Basically I the only think I touch is my EVND. It kind of feel like cheating. I have the FX3 and A1 and I like how seamless shutter angle vs SS makes the process of shooting straight forward.
    It is a different monster, and it does feel more cumbersome at first. But I agree it's not a camera for everyday shooting. The FX3 or A7SIII are the best bang for the sensor especially since you can achieve the same look with any of them.
    Great video Chris.

    You usually grow as a film maker and advance over the years or even months, you end up getting jobs that pay well enough to pay rent but not even to rent the camera kit required for that said job.
    So something I usually say to people is future proof your kit and camera purchases if you’re really pushing for something sustainable. Camera aside a proper lighting kit is key and really that should be the main focus which may mean.... not buying the fx6 😅.
    You have to really think about. For me the variable ND is Worth its weight in gold and would always go for a camera with Built-in ND.
    I can’t tell you how much times it has saved me. The auto ND is always a blessings walking from inside to out doors is easier as well.
    To top this all off, if you’re really looking to get into it a Sony FS7 is a good way to go as well, the used ones are floating around at great prices.... I know 4K 120 is a biggy for a lot of you, but some trade offs are worth it a lot of the time.

    Interesting because I’m working on a documentary on sustainable farming also. 👍🏻 We use native prairie as buffers, planted on the highly erodible slopes and also spaced out in rows within the sloped crop fields to take the place of terraces. Iowa State University calls them STRIPS. We follow their model. We also plan on harvesting half of the prairie each year to be converted to compressed natural gas through anaerobic digestion. Leaving half for wildlife and pollinators.
    I bought the Alpha One for myself and the FX3 for my dad (he paid for it though). 😉
    I got the 100-400 GM for my dad for wildlife and the 28-135 cine lens for hunting and documentary use. Unfortunately I only have the 14-24 f/2.8 Sigma and the 200-600 Sony. If I like my dad’s cine lens I may buy one for myself. I’m wondering about the 24-105 though. Maybe that would fit my needs. Right now I’m leaning toward the cine lens.

    I have FX6 and A7S3. I think they are different cameras. The FX6 is really not easy to shoot by hand. However, if your B camera is FX3 or A7S3, I don't think this is a problem. I always use A7S3 when I'm shooting hand-held. And the FX6 is mounted on a tripod. This combo gives me more flexibility. (But I may need to spend some time on matching their colors.)
    By the way, I like the CineEI mode of the FX6. (Slog-3 mode) In this mode, you can only manually choose to switch between ISO800 and ISO12800. It won't run away. (I was driven crazy by the A7S3’ ISO10000😤) This can only be done with a built-in ND. To me, this is the only reason the FX6 is irreplaceable. If you don't care. I think you are free to choose between the three of them. Cuz I didn't notice any difference in picture quality. Good luck everyone! 😘

    good chat lads, I've just got a twin fx3 set up rolling myself. @chrisbrockhurst have you had any issues with frame rates at 100+ ? Or when rotating the fx3 to get shots? i done some 100fps and rtaing shots, after making proxies in Pr they were really hard to deal with. Anyone else had this issue?

    Man I love my fx6. I’ve rigged it out and I only use Sony native lens and my jobs and projects have turned out amazing. The image quality between the fx6 and the fx3 are night and day. There is a difference. The fx3 is cool more compact and easier to carry around and it inspires to be a cinema camera but it’s not. The best way to explain it is the fx3 is a Chrysler 300 and the fx6 is a Rolls Royce phantom. The 300 inspires to be a phantom that’s affordable but when a phantom pulls up you see why there’s a major price difference and the performance speaks for itself.

      The C70 is a great camera but it has cripples that Canon once again puts in its cameras. It's not full frame, so you need an adapter, but then with the adapter you are limited to certain lenses. Such a shame.

Great conversation though. But I'm gonna have to truly disagree that the Fx3 is a better camera. The 0 audio options is a huge overstatement to the point of basically lying (technically cause you have the scratch mic which is not horrible and if youre recording and doing fashion and or dance content thats more than good enough when flying it on a gimbal).

    No timecode, no way to use an SDI port, no NDs, no way to monitor the exposure at all, small quite low res screen totally unusable outdoor in normally sunny conditions... Plus stupidly designed handle with no functions but an audio module integrated (with no options to move it or to mount anything like a better screen over), no shutter angle mode that for a "Cinema" camera should be a shame... But it has the IBIS!
    Yes this makes the FX3 is such a great option.. 🤦‍♂️

      Plus no options to disable the aggressive noise reduction on the second iso setting on the As7...FX3 and the different rolloff on the hi lights.
      All in all also the Fx6 is not a perfect camera but no one is and aesthetic apart, it checks way more boxes when you look for a real videocentric/production tool.
      Ps. I got nothing to defend the Fx6 and I'm actually shooting mirror less for most of the smaller projects, but seems too many CZcamsrs are pushing for the FX3 recently and I really can't understand why (well...) considering all its limitations and the fact that is basically an A7s3 with no Evf but with tally lights and an integrated non removable audio module sold at a premium price because it's a ✌🏻Cinema✌🏻 line camera..

      All in all I think Fx3 and Fx6 are two different things aimed at two different kind of users and productions.
      And honestly I say this with some regrets as the FX3 could easily be much more than a rehousing of an A7s3 and for sure a missed opportunity to have a really compact designed camera with pro features, specifically more options to control and fully operate as it is, without having to rig it or accepting limitations (some of them could be easily fixed with a fw update).

    FX6 looks different. Can we stop saying there is no difference in image quality? If you don’t think so, you need your eyes checked. A7siii is green, FX3 has a better highlight rolloff + more saturated, and the FX6 has a way better highlight curve and a looks like there’s reduced saturation/contrast, leading to a more airy look. Go look at Vistek’s video on this where he shows a7siii/FX3/fx6 side by side. Even though he says you’d be splitting hairs, nevermind what he says, look at the video. Watch how the FX’s don’t have the green bullshit the a7siii has.
    Stop the nonsense.. they don’t look the same. The FX3 sensor IS NOT the same as the a7siii, it’s has similar tech but different image processing. Same with the FX6, Sony has confirmed it’s not the same sensor, but based on the same stack. If you can recall, Sony execs have said the a7siii is a new platform that others will be based on. Look at Appel with the m1 chip… the following models will all adopt this new paradigm but it won’t be the same exact chip in the first implementation. A7siii, was the first implementation. They are tweaking the tech stack for the future cameras so let’s stop saying same sensor, as if it’s the only component that controls the look of the image.
    I have both the FX6 and FX3, A and B can respectively. The FX3 is better hand held, for quick shots, when I need stabilization and quick turn around. FX6 for narrative, a cam for interviews, and for when I want the best image quality. With that said, both of them could totally be used HOWEVER I want, and I would still be pleased with the image quality.
